Why We Won’t Promise You #1 on Google
The short version
No — no one can honestly guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, because Google decides the rankings and changes how it ranks constantly.
You’ve probably heard the pitch: “We’ll get you to #1 on Google.” Or “We guarantee you 30 leads a month.” It sounds great, especially if you’ve been burned before and you just want someone to promise it’ll work this time. So here’s the uncomfortable truth, from an agency that could easily make the same promise and chooses not to: nobody can honestly guarantee a #1 Google ranking or a fixed number of leads, because the results depend on things no agency controls. A guarantee like that isn’t confidence — it’s a sales device. Below is why those promises don’t hold up, what an honest agency should promise instead, and why the guarantee you should actually want is the freedom to walk away.
Can an agency guarantee #1 rankings on Google?
No — no one can honestly guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, because Google decides the rankings and changes how it ranks constantly. Google’s own guidance says to steer clear of anyone who guarantees rankings; the search platforms update their systems all the time, and what earns the top spot this month can shift the next. A good agency can absolutely improve your odds — clean up your Google profile, build the pages and reviews and links that help you rank, and stack the deck in your favor. But “improve your odds” and “guarantee the outcome” are two very different sentences, and only one of them is true.
We put this in writing, not just on a blog. Our own service terms put it directly: we make no guarantees as to results, and cannot guarantee any specific outcome, because the digital platforms may change their method of operation, which we can’t control. We’d rather tell you that up front than sell you certainty we can’t deliver and watch you get burned again.
Can anyone guarantee you a number of leads?
No — not honestly. Any fixed lead-count promise is usually hiding something. A “guaranteed 30 leads a month” offer tends to hide one of a few things: the leads are shared with your competitors, the count includes junk that never had any intention of booking, or the fine print quietly redefines what counts as a “lead.” Lead volume isn’t the thing you actually care about anyway. What matters is cost per booked job — what you paid to land work that’s actually on the calendar. Ten leads that book three jobs beats fifty leads that book none, every time.
The honest version of a “guarantee” is math you can see. Plainly: if you spend $1,500 and get 10 leads, and 3 of those turn into signed jobs, each booked job cost you $500 to land. Compare that to what a job is worth to you and you’ll know instantly whether it’s working — no guarantee required. For a high-ticket trade like restoration, one booked job a month can cover the entire program. That’s a number we can show you honestly, which is worth more than a promise no one can keep.

What should an honest agency promise instead?
If we won’t promise a ranking or a lead count, what will we promise? The things we actually control — which turn out to be the things that matter:
- The work. A clear scope, done by our team, kept current — not handed off to an account manager who doesn’t know what’s going on.
- Transparency. You own your website, your Google profile, your ad accounts, and your data. If you leave, you take them with you.
- Cost-per-deal visibility. Reporting in booked jobs and dollars — cost per lead and cost per booked job — not a wall of impressions and “engagement.”
- No long lock-in. We ask for three months so the foundation can start paying off, then we earn your business from there — no multi-year handcuff.
- The truth. If something isn’t working, we’ll tell you — and we’ll fix it. That’s the promise the About page has always led with, and we mean it.
Notice that none of these depends on Google’s mood or a platform update. They’re promises about how we behave, which is the only kind of promise an agency can actually keep. An agency that leads with a guaranteed ranking is promising you something it doesn’t own; an honest one promises you the things it does.
Why won’t you lock me into a contract?
Here’s how we actually handle terms, in plain words: we ask for three months and put it in our contract, but the reality is if you want to leave we’re not going to make you stay. It’s like dating — if someone wants out, you should just go. It wouldn’t be worth our time to hold anyone against their will anyway. The three months isn’t a handcuff; it’s a runway. Month one is foundation work — cleaning up the Google profile, fixing your name, address, and phone everywhere it’s listed, building the pages that are missing. That groundwork is what everything later compounds on, so the honest ask is just: give the foundation a chance to start paying off before you judge the results.
And we can say “leave whenever” with a straight face because of the proof behind it: clients stay with us for years, and they stay by choice rather than because a contract traps them. People don’t leave when the work is honest and the reporting is real. A long contract is what you reach for when you’re worried the work won’t hold them on its own.
That’s the same conviction behind why we built Limitless Local for owner-operators in the first place: honesty about what we control is the whole advantage. If you want to see how that shows up in our pricing, we publish it — here’s what marketing costs for contractors, ours included.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SEO agency guarantee a #1 ranking on Google?
No. Google controls the rankings and changes its systems constantly, and Google’s own guidance says to be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings. A good agency can meaningfully improve your odds by fixing your profile, pages, reviews, and links — but improving your odds and guaranteeing the outcome are not the same thing. Anyone promising a guaranteed position is selling certainty they don’t control.
Can a marketing agency guarantee a certain number of leads?
Not honestly. A guaranteed lead count usually means the leads are shared with competitors, padded with junk, or defined loosely in the fine print. The number that matters is cost per booked job, not raw lead volume. A straight agency shows you what each booked job costs instead of promising a count it can’t control.
What should an honest agency promise instead of guarantees?
The things it controls: the work and scope, transparency (you own your website, profile, ad accounts, and data), cost-per-deal reporting in booked jobs and dollars, month-to-month terms, and telling you the truth when something needs fixing. Those are promises an agency can actually keep, because none of them depends on a platform’s algorithm.
Why is a guaranteed-rankings offer a red flag?
Because it promises an outcome the agency doesn’t own. Rankings are decided by search platforms that change constantly, so a guarantee is either a sales device, hedged into meaninglessness in the fine print, or riding on low-value terms nobody searches. It tells you more about how the agency sells than about how it performs.
Do you require a long-term contract?
We ask for three months and it’s in the contract, but if you want to leave we won’t make you stay. It’s a bit like dating: if someone wants out, holding them there helps no one. The three months is a runway for the foundation work to start paying off, not a lock-in, and clients tend to stay well past it because the work earns it.
Want the honest version for your business?
Instead of a guarantee, we’ll show you the truth: a free visibility audit of where you actually stand — where you show up in the map pack and AI answers, where you don’t, and what it would realistically take to book more jobs. Plain English, no pitch, no promise we can’t keep. You decide what to do with it.
