Add the plural and other forms of each yourself, because Google says negative keywords don’t match close variants. Be careful with words like cheap, small and service: they can block real buyers, so add them only after your search terms report shows they’re wasting money in your market.

Keeping the wrong searches out is a weekly part of how we run Google Ads for local service businesses, alongside the keywords, ads and tracking that tie spend to consultations and signed contracts. Google Ads management is included in every package on our local ads page, from Essentials ($3,500 a month, up to $2,500 a month in ad spend) to Growth ($4,500 a month, up to $5,000), with ad spend paid directly to Google. They’re buying chlorine, pricing an above-ground kit, looking for a lifeguard job, checking public pool hours or shopping for a pool table. If your keywords use broad match, which is Google’s default, your ads can show on searches related to your keyword, including searches that don’t contain its direct meaning.

Negative keywords are the fix. Google describes them as a way to exclude search terms so you can focus on the keywords that matter to your customers, and suggests looking for searches similar to your keywords that cater to people looking for something different. For a builder, that’s most of the pool searches that aren’t about building one. Adjust it to the work you actually do; this is our judgement, not a Google list.

A different product: above ground, aboveground, kit, kits, inflatable, kiddie, portable, supplies, supply store, chemicals, chlorine, parts, toys, floats.

Doing it themselves: diy, do it yourself, how to build, build your own, homemade.

Looking for work, not a builder: jobs, job, careers, hiring, salary, apprenticeship, lifeguard.

A pool to swim in, not to own: public pool, community pool, pool hours, swim lessons, swimming lessons, lap swim.

Other meanings of the word: pool table, pool tables, billiards, pool cue, pool hall, carpool, car pool.

Service you don’t sell: cleaning, cleaner, cleaners, weekly service, maintenance, pool opening, pool closing, leak detection.

The last group depends entirely on your business. If you run a service division, those searches belong in their own campaign, not in your negatives; whether to offer pool service covers that decision.

Which match type should each negative keyword use?

Google gives negatives three match types, and they behave differently from regular keywords:

Negative broad match, the default: your ad won’t show if the search contains all the negative’s words, in any order. A negative broad pool table blocks “table for pool room” too, since both words are there.

Negative phrase match: your ad won’t show if the search contains the words in the same order, with or without extra words. A negative phrase “pool table” blocks “used pool table near me” but not “table by the pool”.

Negative exact match: your ad won’t show only if the search is exactly those words, with nothing added.

In our judgement, single words that are never yours, such as jobs, billiards or chlorine, work well as negative broad. Two-word ideas where order matters, such as “pool table” or “public pool”, are safer as phrase. Exact match negatives are for blocking one specific search while leaving its longer versions running. Source: About negative keywords.

Why do I have to add plurals and other forms myself?

Because negative keywords don’t stretch the way regular keywords do. Google says negative keywords won’t match close variants or other expansions: its own example is that excluding flowers blocks “red flowers” but not “red flower”. It also says you’ll need to add synonyms and singular or plural versions yourself, while casing and misspellings are handled automatically.

For a pool builder, that means a list that looks repetitive on purpose: job and jobs, kit and kits, cleaner, cleaners and cleaning, above ground and aboveground, swim lessons and swimming lessons. Google also notes that ampersands and accent marks create separate negatives, and that a negative can be missed in a very long search if it falls after the 16th word. Source: About negative keywords.

Should I block searches with cheap, cost or price in them?

Not all at once, and not cost or price. Someone searching how much an inground pool costs may be months from signing, but they’re often a real future customer, and answering that question on your site is usually a better use of them than blocking them from ads, in our judgement. Stopping price shoppers covers the rest of that problem, from ad copy to qualifying calls.

Cheap is different. “Cheap above ground pool” is already blocked by your above-ground negatives, and in our judgement a search like “cheapest pool installation” rarely leads to a custom build. Still, add cheap only after your search terms report shows it bringing clicks that never become consultations in your market. Words like affordable and financing are usually worth keeping, in our judgement; a homeowner asking about financing is often working out how to pay for a real project.

Should I exclude pool types or work I don't do?

Yes, but think about who else uses the word. A builder who only builds gunite pools might add vinyl liner and fiberglass as negatives in the new construction campaign. A builder who also replaces vinyl liners shouldn’t, because “vinyl liner replacement” is a renovation job they want.

The same goes for renovation words. If you don’t do resurfacing or remodels, add resurfacing, replaster, remodel and renovation as account-level negatives. If you do, keep them out of your account-level list and instead add them as negatives only in your new construction campaign, so those searches go to your renovation campaign and its page. Structuring pool Google Ads campaigns covers that routing, and marketing renovations separately covers whether to split the two at all.

Where should negative keywords go: account, list or campaign?

Use all three, for different jobs. Google says an account-level negative keyword list applies to all eligible search and shopping inventory across your campaigns, including Search, Performance Max, Smart and Local campaigns, with a limit of 1,000 negative keywords. Shared negative keyword lists can hold up to 5,000 negatives each, you can create up to 20 of them, and a change to a list applies to every campaign that uses it.

In our judgement, a pool builder’s account-level list holds the searches that will never fit any campaign: jobs, pool tables, public pools, supplies. Shared lists suit themes you apply to some campaigns but not others, such as service searches. Campaign-level negatives keep your own campaigns from competing with each other. Google’s page on negative keyword lists suggests using it to get ideas for negatives. Google also notes that some search terms without enough activity are left out of the report for privacy, so it never shows every search you paid for.

In our judgement, read it weekly for the first couple of months and at least monthly after that. Look for three things: searches for a different product or job, searches outside the towns you build in, and searches that get clicks but never produce a call or form. The first two usually become negatives right away. The third is a judgement call; give it enough clicks to be sure before you block it. Google warns that if you use too many negative keywords, your ads might reach fewer customers. For a pool builder, a few single-word negatives are the usual culprits, in our judgement:

small blocks “small backyard pool builder” and plunge pool searches from real buyers with small yards.

service blocks “full service pool builder” and “pool design service”.

repair blocks “pool repair and remodel” if you do renovations.

free blocks “free design consultation” searches if that’s how you sell.

When a word is only bad in some combinations, use a phrase negative for the bad combination, such as “pool service” or “weekly service”, instead of the single word. Check a new negative against your best-performing search terms before you save it. Source: About negative keywords.

Do negative keywords work in Performance Max campaigns?

Yes, on Search and Shopping inventory. Google says you can add negative keywords to a specific Performance Max campaign or apply an existing negative keyword list, and that account-level negatives apply to all Search and Shopping inventory, including Performance Max. Google also notes that Performance Max negatives apply to Search and Shopping inventory only, so they won’t control where its other ad formats show.

If you run Performance Max alongside Search, in our judgement your account-level list is the one that matters most, because it covers both campaign types at once. Whether a pool builder should run Performance Max at all is covered in structuring pool Google Ads campaigns. Few trades share their main word with so many unrelated searches, so a pool builder’s list is longer than most from day one.

In-ground and above-ground share the same words. Install, builder and near me appear in both. The above-ground and kit negatives do most of the work of separating them.

Seasonal searches arrive on a schedule. Pool opening searches tend to show up in spring and pool closing in fall, in our judgement. If you don’t offer either, add them before the season, not after you’ve paid for the clicks.

Small pools are real jobs. Plunge pools, spools and small-yard builds are a real part of the market. Keep words like small and mini off your list unless the search terms report says otherwise.

A worked example: one month's search terms report

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark or a typical click cost. Say a builder’s new construction campaign spent $1,800 last month on 150 clicks, an average of $12 a click. Reading the search terms report, they find:

14 clicks on above-ground searches such as “above ground pool installers near me”.

11 clicks on pool cleaning and weekly service searches.

6 clicks on pool construction jobs.

3 clicks on pool table searches.

That’s 34 clicks with no chance of a contract, or about $408 at the average cost (34 times $12), roughly 23% of the month’s spend. The builder adds above ground, aboveground, kit and kits; cleaning and weekly service as phrase negatives; jobs and job; and “pool table” and billiards to the account-level list.

One more line catches their eye: 5 clicks on “small inground pool cost”, one of which booked a consultation. They leave it running. The following month, the same budget buys clicks on searches they actually want; whether those become signed contracts is the next question, covered in which keywords to target.

Frequently asked questions

How many negative keywords should a pool builder start with?

Google doesn’t set a number. In our judgement, start with the groups that clearly don’t fit your business, then grow the list from the search terms report rather than guessing at hundreds of terms up front.

Should I add my competitors' names as negatives?

Only if your ads are showing on those searches and you don’t want them to. If you aren’t bidding on other builders’ names, broad match can still show your ads on them, and the search terms report will tell you.

Should I add towns I don't serve as negatives?

Location targeting does most of that work. In our judgement, add a town name as a negative only when the search terms report shows searches naming a place you don’t build in, such as a same-named town in another state.

Do negative keywords lower my cost per click?

Not directly, in our judgement. What they do is stop you paying for clicks that can’t turn into a contract, which lowers what each consultation costs you.

Can I undo a negative keyword?

Yes. Negatives can be edited or removed at any time, at the account level, in a shared list or in a campaign. Removing one lets those searches trigger your ads again from then on.

Key takeaways

Start by blocking different products, non-buyers and other meanings of pool: above-ground, kits, supplies, jobs, DIY, pool tables, public pools.

Add plurals and other forms yourself; Google says negatives don’t match close variants.

Use phrase negatives for two-word ideas and keep cost, financing and small-pool searches running.

Put never-relevant terms in the account-level list and use campaign negatives to route renovation searches.

Read the search terms report weekly at first, monthly after, and check new negatives against your best searches.

Not sure what's working right now?

Start with a free visibility audit: rankings, Google profile, reviews and tracking, checked against your service area.

Get the free auditTalk to us instead

More in this section

What keywords should a pool builder target?

Are Google Ads worth it for pool builders?

How should a pool builder structure Google Ads campaigns?

Do pool builders need a separate landing page for Google Ads?

Which Google Business Profile categories should a pool builder use?

Sources

About negative keywords — Google Ads Help

About negative keyword lists — Google Ads Help

About account-level negative keywords — Google Ads Help

Negative keywords in Performance Max campaigns — Google Ads Help

About the search terms report — Google Ads Help

About keyword matching options — Google Ads Help

A starting negative keyword list for pool builders: above-ground, DIY, jobs, supplies and pool tables, plus match types and the words that block real buyers.

["https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453972?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453983?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/11396330?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15726455?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2472708?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7478529?hl=en"]
[{"q": "How many negative keywords should a pool builder start with?", "a": "Google doesn't set a number.
