It’s a poor fit as a lead-generation trick: weekly service is low-ticket, route-based work, and missed visits or cloudy water show up in reviews on the same Google profile your builds depend on. Many builders do better starting smaller, with service for their own build customers or a referral partnership with a service company they trust.

Whether to add service is a business decision before it’s a marketing one, and we’d rather you make it on your own numbers. If you do add it, it’s one more set of services under the same name, on the same Google profile and website, and the packages page shows what each tier covers: Essentials, at $3,500 a month, is built for one location. Our pool builder marketing page covers how we approach the trade, and the pool builder marketing questions library goes through the rest question by question.

What does a pool builder actually get from a service line?

Three things, if it’s run well. The first is steadier income. Housecall Pro’s help center describes service plans, also called maintenance plans or service agreements, as a way to generate dependable revenue and to smooth out seasonal swings while staying connected to your best customers. For a builder whose contracts arrive in lumps, that’s the main draw.

The second is a reason to be at the pool again. ServiceTitan describes memberships and service agreements as designed to give a business a steady flow of income and to get technicians back on site, where they can spot upsell and replacement opportunities. A service tech who sees a pool every week is the first to know when the finish is failing or the equipment is near the end.

The third, in our judgement, is more contact with the people who own pools in your area: more reviews, more neighbors seeing your trucks, and more chances to be the company they call. Sources: Create Service Plan Templates (Housecall Pro) and Understand differences between memberships and service agreements (ServiceTitan).

When does adding pool service make sense for a builder?

In our judgement, when most of these are true:

You have a base to start from. A few years of build customers in your area, who already trust you.

Someone will run it. A service manager or lead tech who owns routes, scheduling and quality, so it doesn’t land on the owner’s desk.

You can hire and train techs without pulling people off construction crews.

There’s demand you can reach. The SBA’s market research checklist asks about demand, market saturation and what customers pay for the alternatives; answer those for weekly service in your towns before you commit.

You’ll price it to make money on its own, not as a loss leader for renovations.

If you can’t tick most of them, the smaller options below are a better first step. Source: Plan your business (U.S. Small Business Administration).

When should a pool builder not add a service line?

When the reason is “we need more leads.” In our judgement, a service line started as a lead source usually ends up underpriced and understaffed, and both show. Other warning signs:

Your build calendar is already full and your best people are needed on construction.

Nobody wants to own it. Weekly routes need daily attention, all year.

Your area is already well served by service companies you’d be competing with on price.

The real problem is elsewhere. If consultations aren’t turning into contracts, a service line won’t fix that; follow-up and the sales visit will.

None of that rules out service later. It just means building pools pays better than running routes badly, and a builder with a clear, profitable construction business doesn’t need a side business to justify itself.

Is pool service a good source of renovation and new-pool leads?

For renovations and repairs, often yes. In our judgement, it’s the strongest marketing argument for a service line: a tech at the pool every week sees the worn finish, loose tile and tired equipment long before the owner starts searching, and can introduce your renovation team at the right time. If you go that way, it helps to market renovations separately from new pools, so those leads have their own page, process and numbers.

For new pools, much less. Service customers already own a pool, so the new-build leads come indirectly, through neighbors and friends who see the work. That’s real, but slow, and we wouldn’t count on it in a business plan. Tag every renovation or repair that comes from a service customer with that source, so you can see what the line actually feeds.

What are the options short of a full pool service company?

In order of commitment, from least to most:

Service your own builds through handover. Start-up and the first weeks of care for pools you built, then hand the owner to a service company or keep them on a plan.

A service plan for your own customers only. Openings, closings or periodic checks for people you’ve built for, sold as a plan with set visits. Housecall Pro’s service plan setup, for example, lets you set the number of visits per year and bill monthly, quarterly, twice a year or yearly.

A referral partnership. Recommend one or two service companies you trust and ask them to send renovation and repair work your way. No routes to run.

A full public service line. Weekly routes, marketed to any pool owner in your area.

In our judgement, most builders should start at one or two and move up only when the numbers and the staff support it. The referral route is the cheapest way to get most of the renovation upside without running routes; getting referrals from other trades covers how to set up that kind of relationship.

How should a builder price and bill a pool service line?

As recurring work, priced to stand on its own. Pool service software is built around that model: Skimmer, a pool service platform, describes collecting recurring service payments per stop or as a flat monthly fee, with or without chemicals, with customers able to opt into autopay. Service plans in general software like Housecall Pro work the same way, with a set number of visits and a payment schedule.

In our judgement, the price has to cover the tech’s time on site, the drive between stops, chemicals and parts, the truck, and the office time it takes to schedule and bill, with a profit left over. Work that out before you quote anyone. The trap for builders is pricing service cheaply because “the renovations will make it up”; if they don’t, you’ve built a route that loses money every week. Source: Billing FAQ (Skimmer).

Should pool service share my Google Business Profile?

Yes, if it’s the same company at the same location. Google’s guidelines say not to create more than one profile for each location of your business, and to choose categories that describe your overall core business, using as few as possible. Service is something your pool company does, so it belongs on the same profile, listed in the services section. Google’s services editor lets you group services into categories with descriptions, so construction, renovation and service can each have their own heading.

That has a consequence worth thinking about before you start: every service customer can review you on the same profile homeowners check before hiring you to build a pool. Weekly service gives you far more chances to earn reviews than construction does, and far more chances to get a bad one. Optimizing a pool builder’s Google profile covers the profile itself. Sources: Guidelines for representing your business on Google and Manage your services on your Business Profile.

How would I market a pool service line?

Mostly close to home, in our judgement. The cheapest service customers are the ones you already know: people you’ve built for, and pool owners on the streets where you already have stops. A route is profitable when the stops are close together, so marketing to the whole region can sign customers you can’t serve efficiently.

Practical steps:

Offer it at handover to every new pool customer.

List it on your Google profile and give it its own page on your website, separate from construction and renovations.

Ask every service customer for a review once the routine is running well. Getting more Google reviews for a pool company covers the ask.

Hold off on paid ads until you have route capacity and know what a service customer is worth to you over a year.

Will a service line keep my business busy in the off-season?

It depends on your climate. In our judgement, where pools stay open year-round, weekly service can run through the months when construction slows, which is exactly the revenue smoothing service plans are meant to provide. Where pools close for winter, service work bunches into openings in spring and closings in fall, which overlaps with your busiest selling and building months rather than filling the quiet ones.

So check the calendar before you count on it. If service won’t fill your slow months, the off-season is better spent on design consultations, proposals and next year’s build list; keeping leads coming in the off-season covers that.

What are the risks of adding service to a building business?

In our judgement, four stand out:

Attention. A service line needs daily management. If that comes from the owner, the building side can suffer.

Safety. Service techs handle pool chemicals. The CDC’s pool chemical safety guidance, written largely for public and commercial pools, says only people trained in pool chemical safety practices should handle pool chemicals, and that chemicals can injure people when mixed or handled without the right protective equipment. Train before the first route.

Reputation. Missed visits and water problems turn into reviews on the profile that sells your builds.

Licensing and insurance. Requirements for service work and chemical handling vary by location. Check with your state and local licensing offices and your insurer before you start; this isn’t legal advice.

Source: Pool Chemical Safety (CDC).

How do I know if the service line is worth keeping?

Judge it on two counts, over a full year. First, on its own: revenue, profit after tech wages, chemicals, trucks and office time, and how many customers you keep. Second, on what it feeds: renovations, repairs and equipment jobs that came from service customers, tracked with their own lead source. Tracking which marketing produces signed pool contracts covers how to record that source and carry it through to the contract.

In our judgement, a service line is worth keeping if it makes a profit on its own and the renovation work is a bonus. If it only works when you count the renovations, look hard at the pricing and route density before deciding it’s worth the management time.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about a service line for pool builders

Project business versus route business. Building is a few large contracts a year. Service is many small, recurring visits. They need different managers, different pricing and different measures of success.

Same name, same reviews. Unlike a separate company, a service line run under your brand puts every service customer’s opinion on the profile that sells your builds.

The renovation link. Most trades add maintenance plans to sell replacements. For a pool builder, the equivalent is renovation work, and the service tech is the one who sees it coming.

Climate matters. Whether service evens out your year depends on whether pools in your area stay open through winter.

A worked example: judging a service line on its own

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say you build up to 40 weekly service customers at $150 a month each. That’s $6,000 a month, or $72,000 a year, in service revenue. After tech wages, chemicals, the truck, drive time and office time, say the line keeps 15% as profit: $10,800 a year.

Now add what it feeds. Over the same year, your techs flag several worn-out finishes and you sign 2 renovations from service customers, each leaving $4,000 in profit. That’s $8,000 more, for $18,800 in total from the service line.

The test is the first number. If the line made its $10,800 on its own, the renovations are a bonus and it’s worth keeping. If pricing or spread-out stops meant it only broke even, those two renovations would be the whole return, and you’d be running a 40-stop weekly route, all year, for $8,000. That’s when a referral partnership with a good service company may get you most of the renovation work for none of the routes.

Frequently asked questions

Can my construction crew handle service in their downtime?

In our judgement, rarely for long. Weekly service needs the same tech at the same pools on a fixed schedule, and construction downtime is unpredictable, so routes slip when building picks up.

Should service customers get a discount on renovations?

It’s one way to reward them; Housecall Pro’s service plans, for example, can apply a discount to jobs for plan customers. In our judgement, a priority spot on the schedule often matters more to them than a discount.

Should I buy an existing pool route instead of starting one?

It can get you customers and route density faster, but it’s a business purchase, not a marketing decision.
