Ask who will own the Google Ads account, Google Business Profile, Search Console, domain and tracking phone numbers, and get admin or primary ownership in your name. Then ask about pool experience, the monthly scope of work, the contract term and exit, and expected timelines, and walk away from anyone who promises you a ranking.

Limitless Local has sat on the builder’s side of these questions. The agency was an equity partner in a pool construction company, where it streamlined back-office operations, built the lead-generation engine and ran sales and marketing. That business did $2M+ revenue in year one. Ask us anything on this page; our prices and what each package includes are public on the packages page, and the pool builder marketing page explains how we work with pool companies. The rest of the pool builder marketing questions library covers each channel in more depth.

What should I ask about their pool industry experience?

Start with the questions Google itself suggests asking anyone you hire for search work: can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories, what’s your experience in my industry, and what’s your experience in my city. Google also says a good candidate should be interested in your business and ask what makes it unique, who your competitors are and how your customers find you. Source: Do you need an SEO?.

For a pool builder, make each of those questions specific:

“Show me a pool company you’ve worked with.” Not a roofer or a dentist. Ask what that builder sells (new gunite builds, fiberglass installs, renovations) and what the agency changed.

“What does a good lead look like for me?” If the answer is a phone call or a form fill, they’re thinking like a service-trade agency. A pool lead only matters if it books a design consultation and the project fits what you build.

“How do you handle a sale that takes months?” Listen for follow-up, remarketing and tracking a lead all the way to a signed contract.

“What do you need from me?” Honest pool marketing needs your project photos, build process and service area.

Google also recommends checking references: ask past clients whether the agency was useful, easy to work with and produced positive results. Ask for another pool builder, ideally one far enough from your market to speak freely, and ask whether the reports showed signed contracts or just clicks.

A general agency can still do good work for a pool builder. In our judgement, the test isn’t whether pools are their only trade; it’s whether their answers show they understand a high-ticket, seasonal, long-cycle sale.

How will you measure results when a pool contract takes months to sign?

This is the question most owners skip, and it decides whether you’ll ever know if the money worked. Ask the agency to describe, step by step, how a homeowner who clicks an ad in March shows up in your report as a signed contract in July.

Two Google Ads settings are worth asking about by name:

The conversion window. Google Ads counts a conversion only if it happens within a set period after the ad click. The default is 30 days, and for Search campaigns it can be set as long as 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the conversion source. Google says a longer window suits businesses whose buying cycle doesn’t fit the default, and that changing the window isn’t retroactive. Source: About conversion windows.

Importing signed contracts back into Google Ads. Google’s own example of an offline conversion is a person signing a contract after clicking an ad. You save the click ID with the lead and send it back when the contract signs. For accounts that haven’t set this up yet, Google now recommends starting with enhanced conversions for leads instead. Source: About offline conversion imports.

A good answer names these settings or something equivalent and explains who records the contract in your system. A weak answer is “we’ll send you a report.” How the tracking itself fits together is laid out in tracking which marketing signs contracts.

Who will own the Google Ads account, and who pays Google?

Ask whether the agency will work inside a Google Ads account in your company’s name or create one in theirs. In our judgement, the account should be yours, with the agency added as a user or linked as a manager, because the account holds years of search terms, conversion data and history you’ll want if you ever switch.

Google’s access levels make the question concrete. Admin users can give and remove access, change access levels and unlink manager accounts; Admin and Billing users can edit billing information and forms of payment. Google also notes that an account with only one administrator can lose access to its tags if that person becomes unavailable, and suggests adding at least one more admin. Source: About access levels in your Google Ads account.

So the questions are: will I have admin access from day one, whose card or invoice pays Google for the clicks, and will I see the actual ad spend separately from your fee? A management fee and ad spend are two different numbers, and a proposal should show both.

Who will own my Google profile, website and Search Console?

Google Business Profile. A profile can have several owners but only one primary owner, who has full control. Managers can do most of the daily work, such as editing info, replying to reviews and posting, but can’t add or remove users or delete the profile. Google also says each user should have their own Google Account so nobody has to share a password. Ask the agency to accept a manager invitation rather than take primary ownership. Source: Manage your Business Profile owners & managers.

Search Console. Owners have full control of a property; full and restricted users have view rights. A property must have at least one verified owner, and Google says that if the only verified owner leaves your team, you should verify ownership to keep or regain access. Make sure that’s you. Source: Managing owners, users, and permissions.

The website and domain. Ask whose name the domain is registered in and who holds the hosting login. ICANN says it’s your right to move your domain between registrars, and that a registrar must give you the transfer code within five calendar days of your request. Source: FAQs for Registrants: Transferring Your Domain Name.

The account-by-account case for owning all of this is also covered in the agency or do-it-yourself decision.

What happens to my tracking phone numbers if I leave?

Agencies often put tracking numbers on your ads, your website and sometimes your Google profile, so each call can be tied to its source. That’s good practice. The question is whose account those numbers live in.

CallRail, one of the common call tracking tools, says you own the numbers you create in its system and that it won’t block a port-out approved by an administrator on your account. Porting a U.S. or Canadian number away is free, typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, and you shouldn’t deactivate the number or close the account until the port is confirmed. Source: Port a phone number away from CallRail.

In our judgement, the practical question is “if the numbers sit in your account, will you authorize the port when I leave?” A pool builder’s tracking number can end up printed on yard signs, trucks and brochures, so losing it costs more than a few calls.

What exactly will you do each month, and will you explain every change?

Google’s list includes two questions that matter here: how will I communicate with you, and will you share all the changes you make to my site, with the reasoning behind your recommendations? Google also warns owners to be careful with a company that is secretive or won’t clearly explain what it intends to do, and reminds you that you’re responsible for the actions of any company you hire. Source: Do you need an SEO?.

Ask for the monthly work in writing: how many pages, posts or campaigns, who writes them, how often someone reviews the ad search terms, and who replies to your Google reviews. Then ask who actually does the work and who you call when something breaks in May.

What results do you expect, and how soon?

Google suggests asking exactly this: what kind of results do you expect to see, in what timeframe, and how do you measure success? The honest answer has two clocks. Ads can bring in inquiries within days of launch; SEO typically takes 3 to 6 months to show meaningful organic growth. For a pool builder there’s a third clock on top of both, the weeks or months between a first inquiry and a signed contract.

What you don’t want to hear is a promise. Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and to beware of anyone claiming a “special relationship” with Google or offering a “priority submit”. Source: Do you need an SEO?. A realistic agency should talk about consultations from the right towns first and signed contracts once enough time has passed. The SEO ramp for pool companies is laid out in how long pool builder SEO takes.

How long is the contract, and how do I get out?

Ask for the minimum term, the notice period, and what you get back on the way out: account access, the website files, the tracking numbers and your data. Read the cancellation clause before you read the price.

In our judgement, a contract that only works if you can’t leave is a warning sign, and so is one that’s silent about who keeps the accounts. For what it’s worth, ours is month-to-month: we ask for three months and put it in the contract, but if you want to leave, we won’t make you stay.

Which answers should make me walk away?

Start with Google’s warning list for anyone selling search work: promised rankings, a claimed special relationship with Google and cold emails promising to fix your listings. The agency or do-it-yourself decision walks through that list. One newer item is worth asking about directly: Google asks whether an agency offering advice on AI search (sold as “AEO” or “GEO”) follows Google’s official guidance on generative AI features, and whether it cites official Google documentation for its recommendations. Source: Do you need an SEO?.

Add the pool-specific ones, which are our judgement:

They’ll only run the ads from an account in their name.

They report clicks, impressions and “leads” but have no plan to count consultations or contracts.

They can’t say what they’d do differently in winter.

They never ask to see your past projects or your sales process.

What mistakes do pool builders make when hiring an agency?

In our judgement, these are the ones that cost the most:

Comparing proposals on the monthly fee alone. The number that matters is what each signed pool costs, fees plus ad spend. How much to spend in total is covered in pool builder marketing budgets.

Letting the agency open the accounts. It’s quicker on day one and painful on the day you leave.

Not agreeing what a lead is. If you don’t define a qualified pool lead before you start, every report will look good.

Hiring in the rush. Signing in May means setup happens while you’re slammed and can’t supply photos or answer questions.

Judging the agency in month two. Contracts lag consultations, so early months should be judged on consultations and setup, not signed pools.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about hiring an agency for a pool company

One contract is a big number. On a high-ticket build, a few contracts a year can pay for a lot of marketing, so the question to ask isn’t whether an agency is cheap but whether it can show you which contracts it produced.

The sale is long and the report has to follow it. A service trade can judge a channel by this week’s calls. A pool builder needs the agency to keep track of a lead through the consultation, the design, the proposal and the financing conversation before anything is proven.

Your work is the marketing. Finished pools, build-stage photos and customer stories are what homeowners compare. An agency that doesn’t ask for them will fall back on stock images and generic copy.

Timing matters. In our judgement, hire before homeowners start planning next season’s pools, not in the middle of the build season.

A worked example: the question that separates two reports

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark. Say you spend $6,000 in a month, fees and ad spend together, and the agency’s report shows 30 leads. That’s $200 per lead, and it looks fine.

Now ask the question from this page: how many of those became consultations and contracts? Say 8 booked a design consultation. That’s $750 per consultation. And say 2 of them eventually signed. That’s $3,000 per signed pool.

All three numbers describe the same month. Only the last one tells you whether the marketing paid for itself, because you can compare it with what a pool earns you. Before you hire, ask each agency which of the three numbers their monthly report will show, and how they’ll get the last one when contracts sign months later.

Frequently asked questions

Should I hire an agency that only works with pool builders?

Not necessarily. Google Ads and Business Profile both let you add people with their own Google Accounts, so nobody needs your password. Invite them as a user or manager instead.

Should I let an agency do a free audit before I hire them?

It can be useful. Google advises giving only read access to Search Console at that stage, and says an audit should give realistic estimates, not a promise of first place.

What should a pool marketing proposal include?

The monthly fee, the expected ad spend shown separately, the scope of work, how results will be reported, the contract term and notice period, and who owns each account.

Can I ask an agency to sign up for a trial month?

You can ask.
