The two work best with different jobs: LSAs for urgent, general searches like “electrician near me”, paid per lead, and search ads for planned work like panel upgrades, EV chargers and generators, paid per click. If your budget only funds one properly, run one well instead of two thinly.

That split is how we’d run the two together for an electrical contractor: each channel gets its own kind of job, and both are judged on cost per booked job. Google Ads and Local Services Ads management are part of our local ads work for electrical contractor marketing, and the rest of the electrical marketing questions library takes each channel one question at a time.

Can an electrical company run Google Ads and Local Services Ads at the same time?

Yes. They’re separate campaigns that charge in different ways, and Google’s own troubleshooting page tells owners running Search or Performance Max campaigns alongside Local Services Ads to troubleshoot those separately. Source: Why aren’t my Local Services Ads running?.

Running both is getting simpler to manage. Google is moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, and electrical is one of the categories named in the first phase, which began in August 2026 for select home and storefront service advertisers. Service-area businesses without a storefront, which describes a lot of electricians, are scheduled for late 2026. Once your account moves, both sit in the same Google Ads account. Source: Local Services Ads transition to Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals.

What does each one do that the other can't?

Local Services Ads charge for valid leads, such as calls and messages, not clicks. They show only on Google Search and Google Maps, they have no keywords (targeting comes from the service categories and areas you pick), and they can carry the Google Verified badge. Google says customers can review a provider’s profile to see the licenses and insurance it has checked.

Google search ads charge per click. You choose the searches, write the ad, and send the click to a page on your site. With a call asset, people on a phone can tap to call you straight from the ad, and Google charges that tap the same as a headline click. Turn on call reporting, which uses Google forwarding numbers, and those calls can be counted as conversions.

LSAs are simpler and carry trust signals you didn’t write; search ads let you choose exactly which jobs you pay for. Two starved campaigns teach you less than one funded one.

If you’re still deciding which to turn on first, where an electrician should start covers that decision. This page assumes one is already running and you’re weighing the second.

When should I stick with just one?

Run one channel, well, if any of these apply:

Your LSA screening isn’t finished. Google treats electrician as an urgent category with an additional level of screening, including background checks. Search ads can run meanwhile. Source: Business screening and verification requirements.

Missed calls are common. On LSAs, a call you miss during business hours is charged once the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds.

The budget is thin. Split in two, neither campaign gets enough leads to judge.

Nobody tracks bookings by source. Without that, you can’t tell which channel to grow and which to cut.

Whether LSAs on their own pay off for your shop is its own question, covered in whether LSAs are worth it. Source for the missed-call rule: How leads work.

Will my Local Services Ads and search ads compete with each other?

Inside your search campaigns, no. Google’s page on ad group prioritization says that when several of your keywords, or Performance Max search themes, could match the same search, they don’t compete with each other in the auction: only one of them triggers an ad. Source: About ad group and asset group prioritization within a Google Ads account.

Between a Local Services ad and a search ad, Google’s pages are less specific. Pay-per-lead campaigns have no keywords or search themes, and the pages we read don’t spell out how the two are placed against each other for the same search. So we plan for overlap rather than against it.

The practical point, in our view, is the customer, not the auction. A homeowner might click your search ad today and call your Local Services ad tomorrow. You may pay for both touches, and your reports may credit the job to whichever channel the final call came through. That’s a reason to give each channel different work, not a reason to avoid running both.

How should I split the work between LSAs and search ads?

In our judgement, the cleanest setup for most electrical shops gives each channel a different kind of customer:

Local Services Ads take the urgent, general searches: “electrician near me”, a dead circuit, a breaker that won’t reset. That customer wants someone now, calls straight from the ad and sees your verification first.

Search ads go after the planned, higher-value jobs: panel upgrades, EV charger installs, generators, rewires and commercial work, each in its own campaign with its own landing page and its own map.

One setting matters here. Local Services Ads opt you into your industry’s general category by default, so your ad can show for searches like “electrician near me”. You can turn that “broad search” setting off, and Google warns it may mean fewer leads. For most electricians that broad traffic is what LSAs do best, so we’d leave it on and point search ads elsewhere. Source: Edit your industries, service areas, and job types.

How to structure those search campaigns by job type is covered in which Google Ads campaigns work.

How should I split the budget between them?

There’s no correct ratio. What helps is knowing how each budget behaves:

Search campaigns run on an average daily budget. On a given day a campaign might spend up to twice that average, but over a month it won’t spend more than 30.4 times it. Source: About overdelivery and your average daily budget.

Pay-per-lead campaigns, after the move into Google Ads, also use a daily average budget. Monthly spend is capped at your daily average budget times 30.4. Manual bidding, such as a maximum price per lead, is no longer supported. Source: Google Ads Help.

So set each budget from the monthly number you can live with and expect daily spend to move around. In our judgement, keep LSAs funded at the level that’s already booking jobs, then give search ads enough for one job type at a time rather than spreading a small budget across five. For the bigger budget question, see what electricians spend on Google Ads.

How do I keep from paying twice for the same customer?

You can’t remove all of it, but you can cut the obvious overlap:

Keep LSA settings tight. Leave on only the job types you want and the towns you’ll drive to. Every valid lead counts toward your budget, wanted or not.

Know how repeat contacts are charged. Once an LSA lead is charged, follow-up calls or messages from the same phone number or email aren’t charged again as long as there’s contact within 15 days. Source: How leads work.

Keep search ads off the jobs LSAs already cover well. If LSAs bring all the service calls you can handle, a search campaign bidding on “electrician near me” mostly buys the same customer a second way, in our view.

Clean up search terms. Negative keywords keep search ads off DIY, job-seeker and parts searches. Negative keywords to add first covers the list.

How do I know which one booked the job?

Each channel reports its own lead count, and neither knows which leads booked unless you tell it. In Google Ads, a pay-per-lead campaign’s Conversions column shows the leads you were charged for, and Cost / conv. is your average cost per lead. For search ads, call reporting with Google forwarding numbers counts calls from your ads as conversions, and form fills need their own tracking. Sources: Google Ads Help and About call assets.

The step that matters happens in your job software, whether that’s ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber: tag every new customer with the channel they came through, mark which ones booked, and note the job type. Then cost per booked job, split by channel and by job type, tells you what each channel is worth. You can download LSA leads from the Leads page to import into your CRM. Tracking which marketing books jobs walks through the setup.

What changes for running both once LSAs move into Google Ads?

A few things are worth planning for:

One account. Budgets, targeting and the lead inbox move into Google Ads, so you see both channels side by side. Old Local Services performance reports don’t carry over, so save them first.

Separate campaigns for separate bids. Google applies one campaign-level target to every category in a pay-per-lead campaign. If you want different bidding for different business categories, Google’s answer is a separate campaign for each.

Your Google Business Profile feeds the ads. Business name, address and hours sync one way from your profile to Google Ads.

New pay-per-lead campaigns still start in Local Services. Google says you can’t create new ones directly in Google Ads yet.

Google also says to allow up to two weeks after migration for performance to settle, so in our view that’s a poor week to launch a new search campaign and judge either one. Source: Local Services Ads transition to Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different for electricians running both

Your job mix is wide. One electrical company can take troubleshooting calls, panel upgrades, EV charger installs, generators and commercial work, each with a different ticket and a different searcher. That’s the strongest reason to run both: LSAs bring whatever mix your categories attract, while search ads let you put money behind the one job you want more of.

The phone rings while you’re in an attic. Many electrical shops are small crews on job sites. Two paid channels mean more calls at the same moments, and on LSAs a missed call during listed hours can still be charged. In our judgement, answering coverage decides whether running both works more than any setting in either account.

Your license sells. On LSAs, your profile can show the licenses and insurance Google checked. Search ads don’t do that for you, so the ad and the landing page have to say you’re licensed and insured. Licensing rules vary by state, so describe your own credentials and nothing broader.

A worked example: judging two channels in the same month

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say an electrical shop spends $3,200 in a month, split evenly: $1,600 on Local Services Ads and $1,600 on a search campaign aimed only at panel upgrades and EV charger installs.

Local Services Ads: at a made-up $80 per charged lead, $1,600 buys 20 leads. If 8 of them book, mostly service calls, each booked job cost $200.

Search ads: at a made-up $16 per click, $1,600 buys 100 clicks. If one click in ten turns into a call or form, and 4 of those book, each booked job cost $400.

On cost per job, LSAs win. But if a panel upgrade leaves several times the margin of a service call, those 4 search-ad jobs may be worth more than the 8 LSA jobs. Compare cost per booked job and what each job is worth, never cost per lead against cost per click.

On our side, running both takes our Growth package: $4,500 a month, which includes Local Services Ads management and Google Ads management up to $5,000 a month in ad spend. Essentials covers Google Ads only, without Local Services Ads. Ad spend is paid to Google separately in every package.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need two separate Google accounts to run both?

Not after your Local Services Ads move into Google Ads. Your pay-per-lead campaign then sits in Google Ads alongside your search campaigns, with budgets, settings and the leads page in one place.

Can my search ads and Local Services Ads ring different phone numbers?

Yes. After the move into Google Ads you can edit the number your pay-per-lead call and message leads route to, and search ads with call reporting show a Google forwarding number. Make sure every number rings someone who answers.

Can I pause one channel and keep the other running?

Yes. They’re separate campaigns. In Google Ads you can set a pay-per-lead campaign to Paused and back to Enabled, and pause search campaigns on their own.

Should I bid on my own company name in search ads if I run LSAs?

It’s a judgement call. If competitors show ads on your name, a cheap brand campaign can protect those calls; if nobody does, you may be paying for customers who would have found you anyway. Check the search terms report before deciding.

Can I set different LSA bids for service calls and panel upgrades?

Google applies one campaign-level target to all the categories in a pay-per-lead campaign. Separate bidding for different business categories needs separate campaigns, which is one more reason planned jobs often fit better in search ads.

Key takeaways

You can run Google search ads and Local Services Ads together;
