In practice, their Business Profile matches the search better, they’re closer to the person searching, or they’re better known, with more reviews, better ratings or more websites linking to them. Check from the towns you actually want before reacting, because distance is measured from the searcher. Sometimes the gap is a rule break, such as a keyword-stuffed name or a virtual office, which you can report to Google; you can’t pay to pass them.

Diagnosing the gap before spending is how we’d start local work for an electrical contractor: find which of the three factors the competitor is winning on, then fix the fast things first and build the slow ones. Map pack and profile work is our local SEO, part of every electrical contractor marketing package, and the rest of the electrical marketing questions library goes question by question.

Why does Google put another electrician above me in Maps?

Google says local results are mainly based on three things: relevance (how well a Business Profile matches the search), distance (how far the business is from the person searching) and popularity, which the same page explains under the heading prominence: how well-known the business is, based partly on how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has. It also says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Source: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

So when one electrician sits above you, the reason is almost always one of those three, or a mix. The useful work is figuring out which one. How the map pack works in general is covered in getting into the map pack; this page is about diagnosing one specific gap.

Are they really above me, or only from where I'm searching?

Check this first, because it’s the most common false alarm. Distance is measured from the person searching, and Google’s explanation of search says it uses information such as your location to decide what’s most relevant, and recognizes when a search has local intent. The map pack for “electrician” outside your shop is not the map pack three towns over. Drive there, or ask a customer or a tech who lives there to screenshot the results.

Search the way homeowners do: “electrician”, “electrician near me”, “panel upgrade”, “EV charger installer”, plus the town name.

Note where the competitor’s shop is compared with yours, and where the searcher was standing.

If they win only in their own town and you win in yours, that’s distance doing its job, not a problem to fix. If they win across the towns you both serve, keep reading.

Is their shop simply closer to the customers I want?

Distance is the one factor you can’t work on. If a competitor’s office sits in the middle of the town you want and yours is twenty minutes out, they have an edge there that profile work won’t fully erase, in our judgement.

What you can’t do is fake your way closer. Google’s guidelines say a business that rents a mailing address but doesn’t operate there, a virtual office, isn’t eligible for a Business Profile, and a service-area business can’t list a virtual office unless it’s staffed during business hours. A service-area business without a storefront gets one profile, and its overall service area shouldn’t extend farther than about two hours of driving from where it’s based. Source: Guidelines for representing your business on Google.

If the competitor is closer and legitimate, the honest answer is to win that town on popularity over time, cover it with paid search in the meantime, or focus on towns nearer your own base.

How do I compare my Google profile with theirs?

Pull up both profiles side by side and go through what customers, and Google, can see:

Category. What their profile says they are, next to the name. If theirs is a closer match to the search than yours, that’s relevance. Choosing the right categories covers the rules.

Services. Do they list the jobs you do and you don’t, like panel upgrades or EV charger installation?

Reviews. Total count, average rating, and how recent the newest ones are.

Replies. Do they answer reviews and you don’t?

Photos. Real work and crew photos, or nothing?

Hours and completeness. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.

Website. Does their profile link to a site with a page for the service searched?

Write down every gap. In our experience, the list usually points to one or two clear causes rather than ten small ones. Source: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

Do they just have more reviews than me?

Often, yes. Google says prominence, its word for how well-known a business is, is based partly on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says replying to reviews shows you value customers’ feedback, and that positive reviews and helpful replies can help a business stand out. Source: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

Google doesn’t publish a review count that guarantees a spot, so the benchmark that matters is the competitors in the pack for your searches. If they have a few more than you, a steady ask after every job can close it in months. If they have several times your count, closing it is a long project, and the worked example below shows why. Either way, the answer is the same habit: ask every customer, the same way, with no reward attached. Getting more Google reviews covers how to do that without breaking Google’s rules.

Could their website and links be doing the work?

Yes, and it’s the part owners rarely check. Google names how many websites link to a business as part of prominence. Its explanation of search says that when other prominent websites link to a page, that’s generally a good sign the information is trustworthy. And it says the information in business profiles is compiled from several sources, including publicly available information such as a business’s official website. In our judgement, a few links like that, plus a site with a real page for each service, can outweigh a small review lead.

Is their profile breaking Google's rules?

Sometimes the competitor above you isn’t playing fair. The common ones for service businesses, per Google’s guidelines:

A stuffed business name. Google says including unnecessary information in a business name isn’t permitted and could get a profile suspended. “Best Electrician Panel Upgrades [City]” on a truck that says something shorter is a red flag.

An address nobody works at. Virtual offices aren’t eligible, and co-working offices need signage, staff and customers during business hours.

Several profiles for one business. Google says there should be only one profile per business, and a service-area business without a storefront gets one.

Categories used as keywords. Google says not to use categories solely as keywords or to describe attributes.

Before you assume, check it. A name on the profile that matches the trucks, the website and the state registration is their real name, even if it happens to include “Electric” and a town. For misleading names, phone numbers or website addresses that suggest fraud, Google points to its Business Redressal Complaint form.

Incentivized reviews, where a business offers payment, deals or discounts for reviews or pressures people to leave them: in the Maps app, Suggest an edit, then Report business conduct.

Source: Report a business on Google Maps.

Report what you can document, once, with screenshots, then go back to your own profile. In our judgement, a report is worth filing when the violation is clear, but it’s not a ranking plan: Google decides what to act on and when.

Are some of the businesses above me ads, not rankings?

Check before you compare. Local Services Ads show on Google Search and Google Maps, and a competitor paying per lead can show on the same search page as the map results without outranking you in them. Google says Local Services Ads keep showing on Search and Maps in the same positions as before, now that they’re moving into Google Ads, and its local ranking page says there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking. Sources: Local Services Ads transition to Performance Max campaigns and Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

So separate the ads from the unpaid map results when you look. If the competitor is above you only because they pay for ads, the comparison is your ad budget and your answering against theirs, not your profile. Whether LSAs are worth it covers that side.

What can I change, and how long until it shows?

Sort your gap list into three piles:

Fast (relevance): category, services, hours, phone number, a missing service area, a profile that isn’t verified. These can remove a mistake that’s keeping you out today.

Slow (popularity): reviews, replies, real links from businesses that know you, and a website that covers each service. These build over months.

Fixed (distance): where your shop is. Plan around it, don’t fight it.

Local SEO typically takes 3 to 6 months to show meaningful growth, and nobody can honestly promise you’ll pass a specific competitor by a date. To see whether the work is moving, check the Searches metric in your Business Profile Performance report, which shows the terms people used to find you, and note that Performance data includes activity from both organic results and Google Ads. That makes distance comparisons less obvious than for a storefront, and it’s why a competitor who has a staffed office in town can look stronger there.

The job mix splits the map. “Electrician” and “EV charger installer” don’t always return the same businesses. A competitor who lists EV charger installation, panel upgrades and generators as services, with reviews that mention them, can beat you on those searches even if you win on “electrician”. Check the searches for the jobs you want, not just the general one.

Handymen and unlicensed outfits show up too. Some of the profiles above you may not be licensed electricians at all. You can’t report a business for being cheaper, but you can make your own license and insurance obvious on your profile description and website, so the homeowner comparing you sees the difference.

A worked example: how long a review gap takes to close

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say you have 40 Google reviews and the electrician above you in the towns you want has 120. The gap is 80 reviews.

If they keep adding 4 a month and you start getting 8 a month, you close the gap by 4 a month. That’s 20 months to draw level, if nothing else changes.

If you can get to 12 a month by asking every customer automatically, you close it by 8 a month, and it takes 10 months.

Two lessons follow. A big review gap is a long project, so don’t expect the profile alone to flip that town this quarter. And the review count isn’t the only lever: if your category, services, photos and website are stronger than theirs, you may not need to match their count to pass them, because Google weighs relevance and popularity together. That’s our judgement; Google doesn’t publish the weighting.

On our side, local SEO is built into every package. Essentials ($3,500 a month) includes business listing cleanup, Google Business Profile management, review response and basic review generation, link building and content for one location. Growth ($4,500 a month) adds SEO for up to two locations and advanced review generation. A free visibility audit is a good place to run this comparison against the electricians above you in your own towns.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to rank above a competitor in Maps?

No. Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
