Check local search volume and likely click costs in Google’s Keyword Planner with the location set to your service area, and favor specific job keywords over one-word terms like “electrical” that also pull in job seekers and do-it-yourselfers. After launch, let the search terms report and your booked jobs decide which keywords get more of the budget.

Picking keywords that book jobs is part of how we run Google Ads for electricians, and Google Ads management is included in all of our packages. Our Google Ads management page covers how we build and run campaigns, and our electrical contractor marketing page shows how ads fit with the rest of an electrician’s marketing. The rest of the electrical marketing questions library goes question by question.

What makes a keyword worth bidding on for an electrician?

Three things, in our view. The person searching wants to hire someone, not learn how to do it or find work. The job is one you actually do and want more of. And the person is in the area your trucks cover. A keyword that hits all three, such as “electrician near me” or “panel upgrade”, is worth paying for. A keyword that hits one, such as “electrical”, mostly isn’t.

Google’s own advice on finding new keywords points the same way. It says to describe your service the way customers think of it, and to be specific but not too specific: a keyword that’s too general doesn’t say enough about what people want, and one that’s too narrow limits your reach. For an electrician, “electrician” alone is too general and “best licensed electrician for 1960s ranch house” is too narrow. “Electrician” with a hiring word, or the name of a job, sits in between.

Which keyword groups should an electrician start with?

In our view, most residential electrical accounts start with five groups, each in its own ad group or campaign:

Hiring searches: electrician, electrical contractor, electrical company and electrical service, each paired with “near me”, “local” or “licensed”.

Urgent service: emergency electrician, 24 hour electrician, electrical repair, power out in one room, breaker keeps tripping, outlet not working. Only if someone answers the phone when those calls come.

Panel and service work: panel upgrade, panel replacement, electrical panel upgrade, service upgrade, meter base replacement.

EV chargers: EV charger installation, level 2 charger installation, home EV charger installer.

Generators: generator installation, whole house generator installation, standby generator installer, transfer switch installation.

Add rewiring, lighting, ceiling fans or commercial work if you want those jobs. Google’s advice on organizing an account is to build each ad group around a narrow theme with keywords and ads that match it, and to use separate campaigns when you need different settings, such as budgets or locations. Splitting by job type lets you see the cost per booked job for each kind of work. The campaigns that work for electricians covers how those campaigns fit together.

Should I put city names in my keywords?

Usually not, if your location settings are doing their job. Google’s tips for finding new keywords say to include a location in keywords when your customers aren’t in the same place as your service, and not to include one if you plan to use location targeting. Most electricians target the towns they serve, so a searcher typing “electrician” inside that area can already see the ad.

Two cases where town names earn a spot, in our view: a town you serve that people often search by name from a neighboring area, and a campaign split by town where you want the ad to say the town. Either way, check the location setting. Google’s page on advanced location options says that by default ads reach people in your area and people who show interest in it, and suggests the Presence option when you only want people in, or regularly in, your locations. For a service business that can’t drive to the next state, that matters as much as the keyword list.

Which keywords should an electrician avoid or treat carefully?

The ones that look like customers but aren’t, in our view:

One-word terms like “electrical” or “wiring”. They match everything from trade schools to supply stores.

“Electrician” with no other word on a big budget and broad match. It can work, but it pulls in job seekers unless your negatives are in place first. The first negative keywords covers that list.

Question searches like “how much does an electrician charge”. Some are buyers, many are just curious. Test them in their own ad group rather than mixing them in.

Jobs you don’t want more of. If you’d rather not do small fixture swaps, don’t pay to rank for them.

Google’s article on using Keyword Planner also notes that very high-volume keywords, generally 10,000 or more average monthly searches, are harder to compete for and carry a higher suggested bid, and suggests that a new campaign focus on mid-level search volume so it doesn’t spend too much of its budget on too few keywords. Few local electrical keywords reach that level in one service area, but the principle holds: the broadest terms cost the most per useful call.

How do I check search volume and click costs in my area?

With Google’s Keyword Planner, which is free inside a Google Ads account. Google’s Keyword Planner guide says it suggests keywords related to your business, estimates how many searches each gets a month, and shows the average cost for your ad to show on them. You need to finish account setup, including billing, to use it.

A simple routine for an electrician:

Choose Discover new keywords and enter your main jobs (electrician, panel upgrade, EV charger installation) plus your website.

Set the location to the towns or counties you serve, not the whole country. Google’s Keyword Planner article says a keyword that’s popular nationally may not be in your area, and the location filter shows you.

Look at average monthly searches, competition and the top-of-page bid range for each idea.

Save the keywords that fit the five groups above, then look at the forecast for your budget.

Two cautions from Google. Keywords with very low search volume can’t be found or forecast in the tool, which is common for small towns, so a blank result doesn’t mean nobody searches. And Google says actual performance depends on your bid, budget, ad quality, location targeting and customer behavior, so treat the numbers as a starting estimate.

Should I use broad, phrase or exact match keywords?

Google’s page on keyword matching options lays out the trade-off. Broad match is the default and can show your ad on searches related to your keyword, including ones that don’t contain its words. Phrase match shows on searches that include the meaning of your keyword. Exact match shows on searches with the same meaning or intent and gives you the most control, but reaches the fewest searches. Google says it’s critical to use Smart Bidding with broad match, because broad match reaches so many different searches.

In our view, an electrician starting out or running a tight budget does better with phrase and exact match on the core job keywords, plus a solid negative list. Broad match makes more sense once calls and booked jobs are tracked well enough for Smart Bidding to learn from them. Whatever you choose, the search terms report is how you check what you’re actually paying for.

How many keywords does an electrician need?

Fewer than most people expect. Google’s Keyword Planner article favors quality keywords over a quantity of keywords and suggests reviewing a forecast once you have ten to twenty keywords for a group. Google’s matching page also says that adding very similar keywords, such as the same words in a different order, doesn’t add anything: they’re treated as duplicates and only one bid enters the auction.

In our view, a few tight groups of closely related keywords, each with ads written for that job, beat a long list of loosely related terms. If a keyword has had no impressions for a couple of months, it isn’t helping; if it has had plenty of clicks and no booked jobs, it’s costing you.

Should I bid more on panel upgrades and EV chargers than on service calls?

It depends on what each job earns you and how often its clicks turn into booked work. A panel upgrade or a whole-house generator is worth more than an outlet repair, so in our view it can carry a higher cost per booked job and still pay. Service calls often book faster and keep crews busy between bigger jobs, and some lead to the bigger work.

The way to decide is the worked example below: track cost per booked job for each keyword group, compare it with what that kind of job is worth to you, and move budget toward the groups that pay. Getting more panel upgrade and EV charger jobs covers the rest of the marketing for that work, and how much to spend on Google Ads covers the overall budget.

How do I know which keywords are booking jobs?

You need two things: the search terms report and call tracking tied to jobs. Google’s page on the search terms report explains that a keyword is what you added to your account and a search term is what someone actually typed. The report shows which searches triggered your ads, which of your keywords matched them and how they performed, and Google suggests adding irrelevant ones as negatives.

That tells you which searches brought clicks. Whether those clicks became booked jobs takes conversion tracking for calls and forms, and a way to match leads to jobs in your field software. Tracking which marketing books real jobs covers that setup. Without it, you end up rewarding the keywords that get the most clicks, which is not the same thing.

Do Performance Max and Local Services Ads use my keywords?

Not in the same way. Google’s matching page explains that when a search is identical to an exact match keyword in your Search campaign, the Search campaign is prioritized over Performance Max. When a search is identical to a phrase or broad keyword, that keyword shares priority with an identical Performance Max search theme, and when priority is equal, the ad with the higher Ad Rank wins. Google also notes your keywords can end up serving through Performance Max if the Search campaign is limited by budget or the keyword has low search volume.

Local Services Ads don’t use keywords at all. Google’s page on the move of Local Services Ads into Performance Max says campaigns with pay-per-lead goals are keywordless and use information from your Google Business Profile instead of keyword lists. There, the services and areas you set up do the work your keywords do in Search.

Want to see where your company stands?

A free visibility audit shows where you show up on Google, Maps and AI answers, and what it's costing you in calls.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about keywords for electricians

The trade word has three meanings. “Electrician” is a service, a job title and a school program. That makes hiring words like “near me”, “licensed” and “emergency” more important in electrical keywords than in most trades, and it makes the negative list part of the keyword list.

Specific jobs carry the most intent. Someone searching “panel upgrade” or “EV charger installation” has usually decided what they need. In our view, those keyword groups are where an electrician learns the most per dollar, because the search tells you the job before the phone rings.

Demand moves with weather and new technology. Generator searches can rise around storm season, and EV charger searches follow car sales in your area. Keyword Planner’s date range lets you compare periods, so check seasonal patterns before you set a budget for each group.

Commercial work needs its own keywords. Commercial electrical contractor, tenant improvement electrical and similar searches come from a different buyer. Keep them in their own campaign with their own budget and towns.

A worked example: cost per booked job by keyword group

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark. Say your service-call keywords cost $6 a click, about 1 in 10 clicks calls you, and 1 in 2 calls books. That’s $6 times 10 times 2, or $120 per booked job.

Your panel upgrade keywords cost $14 a click, about 1 in 12 clicks calls, and 1 in 3 calls books. That’s $14 times 12 times 3, or $504 per booked job. The panel group costs about four times as much per job, but if a panel upgrade earns you several times what a service call does, it can still be the better place for the next dollar. You only know by tracking both.

Ad spend is paid directly to Google and isn’t part of any package. Our Essentials package, at $3,500 a month, includes Google Ads management for up to $2,500 a month in ad spend; Growth, at $4,500 a month, covers up to $5,000 a month in spend and adds Local Services Ads management.

Frequently asked questions

Is "electrician near me" worth bidding on?

In our view, yes: it’s one of the clearest hiring searches.
