Google’s Keyword Planner shows local click prices, and dividing the monthly figure by 30.4 gives the average daily budget Google asks for. There’s no honest single number for every electrician, because click prices change with your market and with the mix of service calls and bigger jobs like panel upgrades, EV chargers and generators that you advertise.

Setting and adjusting ad budgets is part of how we run Google Ads for electricians. Ad spend is paid directly to Google, and we recommend a budget after a quick audit of your market. Our Google Ads management page covers how we run campaigns, and our electrical contractor marketing page shows how ads fit with the rest of an electrician’s marketing. The rest of the electrical marketing questions library goes question by question.

How do I work out a Google Ads budget for my electrical company?

Start from the jobs, not the dollars. You need four numbers:

Booked jobs you want from ads each month, on top of the work you already get, and that your crews can actually run.

Your booking rate: out of every call from a new customer, how many become a booked job. Your call tracking and your field software, such as ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber, hold this.

Your click-to-call rate: out of every ad click, how many people call or fill in a form.

What a click costs in your towns for the jobs you advertise.

Booked jobs divided by the booking rate gives the calls you need. Calls divided by the click-to-call rate gives the clicks. Clicks times the cost per click gives the monthly budget. If a month of spend doesn’t come close to what the math predicted, one of the four numbers was wrong, and you can see which.

This page covers ad spend only. For the whole marketing budget, including SEO and fees, see how much to spend on marketing.

Why isn't there a standard Google Ads budget for electricians?

Because the inputs change from town to town. Google’s Keyword Planner guide says campaign results depend on your bid, budget, ad quality, location targeting and customer behavior in your industry, among other things. A click on “panel upgrade” in a dense metro with many electricians bidding isn’t priced like the same click in a small town.

Google is also candid that its own estimates get weaker for small areas. Its page on Keyword Planner forecasts says results will be less accurate if you target a small geographic location, because there’s less data to base predictions on. Most single-shop electricians target exactly that. So treat any budget, including the examples on this page, as a starting estimate you replace with your own numbers after the first month.

Is $1,000, $2,500 or $5,000 a month enough?

Enough for what is the real question. Run each through the same made-up inputs, which are an illustration and not a benchmark: clicks at $10, 1 in 8 clicks calls, 1 in 3 calls books. That works out to $240 in ad spend per booked job.

$1,000 a month buys about 100 clicks, about 12 calls and about 4 booked jobs. In our view, that’s a test budget: enough for one job type in your core towns, and too thin to spread across service calls, panels, EV chargers and generators at once.

$2,500 a month buys about 250 clicks, about 31 calls and about 10 booked jobs. That’s often enough, in our view, for two focused campaigns, such as service calls and one kind of project work.

$5,000 a month buys about 500 clicks, about 62 calls and about 21 booked jobs. That supports separate campaigns for several job types or a wider service area.

Plug in your own click price and rates and the answer can move a lot. The useful test is whether the booked jobs a budget buys are worth more to you than it costs. What a good cost per booked job looks like covers how to set that ceiling.

Where do I find what clicks cost in my area?

In Google’s Keyword Planner, inside your Google Ads account. Google’s guide says it shows estimated monthly searches for each keyword and the average cost for your ad to show on them, and that you need to finish account setup, including billing, before it shows keyword ideas.

For an electrical budget, enter the jobs you’d actually advertise, such as “electrician near me”, “panel upgrade”, “EV charger installation” and “generator installation”, and set the location to the towns your trucks cover. Read the top-of-page bid range for each, then add the keywords to a plan and look at the forecast for the daily budget you’re considering. Google says forecasts are refreshed daily, based on recent days and adjusted for seasonality. Which searches belong in that list is covered in which keywords to bid on.

Run both the low and high end of the range through the budget math. In our view, the high end is the safer planning number for your first month.

How do I turn a monthly budget into the daily budget Google asks for?

Divide by 30.4. Google sets budgets per campaign as an average daily budget, and 30.4 is the average number of days in a month. So $1,000 a month is about $33 a day, $2,500 is about $82 a day and $5,000 is about $164 a day.

Google’s rules keep the month inside that number. For most campaigns, a single day can spend up to two times the average daily budget so Google can catch busy days, but you won’t pay more than 30.4 times the daily budget over a month. If you run more than one campaign, each gets its own daily budget, and the monthly total is the sum.

How should I split the budget between service calls and bigger jobs?

Give them separate campaigns and separate budgets. Google’s advice on organizing an account is to create a separate campaign whenever you need different settings, such as a different budget or location targeting. For an electrician, that usually means service and repair in one campaign, and panel upgrades, EV chargers or generators in others.

Why it matters, in our view: a service call books fast and keeps a truck busy, while a panel upgrade or generator takes an estimate and may take longer to book but is worth more. In one shared budget, the expensive project keywords can use up the money your service calls need on a busy day, or the reverse. Separate budgets let you see the cost per booked job for each and move money toward what pays. Google also warns that reorganizing campaigns later wipes out the data you’ve built, so set the split up before launch. The campaigns that work for electricians covers the structure.

How much should I spend before I judge whether Google Ads is working?

Enough to get a real sample of calls, for long enough to read it. Google’s page on Smart Bidding learning says performance typically settles within 1 to 2 conversion cycles after a change, and recommends evaluating over two conversion cycles or a 2 week window, whichever is longer, allowing for conversions that take several days to come in.

In our view, a budget that buys only a handful of calls a month can’t tell you much, because one good or bad week swings the average. If a full test across every job type is more than you can carry, narrow it: one job type, your core towns, the same budget. A clear answer on panel upgrades in three towns is worth more than a blurry one on everything everywhere.

How do I know if my budget is too small for my market?

Google shows you in two places. A campaign can show a “Limited by budget” status, and Google may show a recommended budget based on recent performance, your budget, keywords and targeting. It won’t show one if you rarely reach your daily budget or the campaign has limited data. Second, impression share is the share of impressions you got out of the ones you were eligible for, which Google calls a good way to understand whether your ads might reach more people with a higher bid or budget.

One catch: Google says Maximize conversions campaigns are designed to spend the full daily budget and are limited by budget by design, so it doesn’t recommend reading the lost-to-budget impression share column with that strategy. A capped campaign booking jobs at a good cost is a reason to add budget. A capped campaign booking jobs at a bad cost is a reason to fix keywords, the landing page or follow-up first.

Should my Google Ads spend change with the seasons?

It often should, in our view. Generator searches tend to rise ahead of storm season and after outages, EV charger demand follows car sales in your area, and service calls can pick up with heat waves and cold snaps. A flat budget all year can leave you short when demand is up and overspending when crews are booked out.

Google makes changes cheap to try. Its Smart Bidding page says budget updates take effect in the next auction and never trigger a “Learning” status, so you can raise a generator campaign before your busy stretch and trim it after without starting over. Getting generator leads before storm season covers the timing for that work.

Does an agency's fee come out of my ad budget?

It shouldn’t be blended in. Ad spend is what Google charges for clicks; a management fee pays someone to build, run and report on the campaigns. Ask any agency, us included, to show both lines separately so you can see cost per booked job with and without the fee.

Our own setup is public. Ad spend isn’t included in any package and is paid directly to Google. Essentials is $3,500 a month and includes Google Ads management for up to $2,500 a month in ad spend. Growth is $4,500 a month, covers up to $5,000 a month in ad spend and adds Local Services Ads management.

Talk it through with someone who runs this every day

A 15-minute growth call: your market, your numbers, and what a realistic budget looks like. In our view, an electrician’s ad budget works best when each gets its own campaign and its own number.

Job seekers eat budget if you let them. “Electrician” is also a job title, so a budget set without a negative keyword list buys clicks from people looking for work. The first negative keywords are part of setting the budget, not an afterthought.

Urgent calls only pay if someone answers. Budget for emergency and after-hours searches only if the phone gets picked up at those hours. Otherwise you pay for clicks that become missed calls.

Commercial work runs on a different clock. Commercial jobs often come through bids and relationships, and a click may take months to turn into work. If you advertise for commercial, judge that campaign over a longer window than residential service.

A worked example: building an electrician's monthly budget

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say you want 6 more booked service calls and 3 more booked panel upgrades a month from Google Ads.

Service calls: your office books 1 in 2 calls, so you need twelve calls. About 1 in 8 clickers call, so you need 96 clicks. At a made-up $10 a click, that’s $960 a month.

Panel upgrades: 1 in 3 calls books, so you need 9 calls. About 1 in 9 clickers call, so you need 81 clicks. At a made-up $16 a click, that’s $1,296 a month.

The total is $2,256 a month, or about $74 a day across the two campaigns. Each service call costs $160 in ad spend and each panel upgrade $432. If a panel upgrade earns you several times what a service call does, both can be worth it. Now stress-test it: if panel clicks cost $24 instead of $16, that campaign costs $1,944 and each panel job $648, and the month comes to $2,904. Run Keyword Planner’s high range through the math before you commit.

For comparison, $2,256 a month sits within the $2,500 in ad spend our Essentials package manages, and the stress-tested $2,904 would sit within the $5,000 that Growth covers; either way, ad spend is paid to Google separately.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google spend more than my monthly budget?

For most campaigns, no.
