A diagnostic or trip fee that’s credited to the job, stated clearly up front, also filters out people who are only collecting numbers. Then stop paying for searches that attract bargain hunters, and track which lead sources’ estimates actually close.

Screening at the front end is where the automation side of our work helps: unified messaging, calendar and reminders, and AI website chat are automation add-ons that plug into any tier of our electrical contractor marketing, with pricing shared on the discovery call. The rest of the electrical marketing questions library goes question by question.

What counts as a wasted electrical estimate?

Not every estimate that doesn’t close is wasted. You’ll lose some to timing, budget or another contractor, and that’s the cost of quoting. A wasted estimate is one that never had a real chance: the customer wanted a number to compare against a handyman’s, already had two quotes and needed a third for the record, wanted a price for a job you don’t do, or wasn’t the person who makes the decision.

It’s also worth separating price shoppers from price-conscious customers. Plenty of good customers ask what something costs before they’ll let you in the door. In our judgement, the goal isn’t to avoid them; it’s to stop spending a half-day of an electrician’s time on people who would only ever hire the cheapest bid.

Step 1: Find out which estimates you're losing, and where they came from

Before changing anything, look at the numbers you already have. Jobber’s quotes report calculates a quote conversion rate from quotes sent and quotes converted each month, and Housecall Pro and ServiceTitan have their own estimate reports. Pull the last few months and sort the lost and ignored estimates by lead source and job type.

You’re looking for a pattern. Price shoppers usually cluster: one lead service, one ad campaign, one kind of small job. If most of your dead estimates are small residential jobs from one source, that’s the place to screen hardest. If they’re spread evenly, the problem is more likely in how estimates are booked than in where leads come from. Tracking which marketing brings in real jobs covers getting lead source onto every estimate.

Step 2: Ask qualifying questions before you book the visit

Give whoever answers the phone a short, fixed list and ask it every time. Ours would look like this:

What’s the job? In the customer’s words, then confirm it’s work you do.

Where is it? The full address, so you know it’s in your service area before anything else.

What prompted it? A new EV, a home sale inspection, a renovation, a problem that started last week. The reason tells you how serious and how urgent the customer is.

When do you want it done? “Sometime this year” and “before the car arrives next month” are different leads.

Who else needs to be there? For larger jobs, book the visit when the person who decides can be home.

Have you had other quotes? Ask it plainly. A customer on their fourth quote isn’t a reason to refuse, but it is a reason to quote by phone or photo first.

None of these questions is rude, and serious customers rarely mind them. In our judgement, the people who won’t answer them are telling you something too.

Step 3: Make your online request form do the screening

Your website form can ask the same questions, so online leads arrive already qualified. Jobber’s request forms, for example, let you add short and long answer questions, dropdowns, checkboxes, yes/no toggles, a date picker for availability and an image upload that takes up to 10 files, and you can mark questions as required. It can also add a “How did you hear about us” dropdown that maps to the lead source on the client’s profile.

Two settings matter for price shoppers. First, Jobber lets you build an assessment booking form so customers can book the estimate visit themselves, and that form type includes an option to require your approval before the booking is confirmed. Turn that on for in-person estimates, so someone looks at the request before a truck is committed. Second, keep the form short. In our judgement, four or five well-chosen required questions screen better than fifteen that make real customers give up.

Step 4: Use photos to quote small jobs without a visit

A lot of residential electrical work can be priced, or at least ranged, from a few good photos: the panel with the door open, the location for a new circuit or outlet, the spot where an EV charger will go and the path back to the panel. Ask for them on the form or by text after the call.

From the photos you can do one of three things: give a firm price, give a range with a note that the final price depends on what you find, or decide the job needs a visit after all. Each one saves the drive for jobs that don’t need it, and in our judgement a customer who sends clear photos when asked is a more serious customer than one who won’t.

Be careful with firm prices from photos alone. Write down what the price assumes, so a surprise behind the wall becomes a change order, not an argument.

Step 5: Decide which jobs get a free estimate and which carry a fee

Free estimates bring in serious customers and price collectors alike. One common approach is to split them: project work such as panel upgrades, generators, EV chargers and remodels gets a free estimate, while troubleshooting and small repairs carry a diagnostic or trip fee that’s credited toward the work if the customer goes ahead. In our judgement, a fee like that filters out people who only want a number, without putting off people who need the work done.

If you advertise “free” anything, say exactly what’s free. The FTC’s advertising guide for small businesses says that when a free or low-cost offer is tied to buying something else, the terms should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, with the most important terms near the advertised price, and that the price of what’s being bought shouldn’t be raised to cover the free part. “Free estimates on panel upgrades; diagnostic visits are a flat fee, credited to the repair” is clear. “Free estimates” on a page where some visits are charged is not. This is general guidance from the FTC’s page, not legal advice.

Step 6: Give a ballpark before anyone gets in the truck

Sticker shock at the kitchen table is the most expensive way to lose a price shopper. A ballpark on the phone (“panel upgrades in our area usually run in this range, depending on what we find”) lets the customer self-select before you’ve spent anything. Use your own past jobs to set the range, and say what moves a job to the top of it.

The same idea can work online. Google’s help page on managing services on your Business Profile says you can add a description and price to the services you list, though custom service names themselves can’t contain prices. Whether to publish prices on your website is its own decision, covered in whether electricians should show prices on their website.

Step 7: Stop paying for searches that bring in bargain hunters

Some price shoppers are created by your own ads. Google Ads’ search terms report shows the actual searches that triggered your ads, and negative keywords stop your ads from showing for searches you don’t want. For an electrical shop, that list often includes words like “cheap”, “free”, “DIY”, “how to” and “jobs” or “salary” (people looking for work, not an electrician).

Google notes that negative keywords don’t match close variants the way regular keywords do, so you’ll need to add synonyms and singular or plural versions yourself. Review the search terms every week or two at first; the list for your market will be different from anyone else’s. Which campaigns deserve the budget in the first place is covered in which Google Ads campaigns work best for electricians.

Step 8: Show why you cost more before the visit

Price shoppers compare numbers because they can’t see anything else to compare. Give customers something else before you arrive: that you’re licensed and insured, that you pull permits where required, what your warranty covers, and reviews from customers who had the same kind of job. Put it in the confirmation text, on the estimate page of your website and in your Google profile.

Licensing rules vary by state, so describe your own credentials rather than making claims about what the law requires of others. How to put your license number to work in your marketing is covered in showing your electrical license number in your marketing.

Step 9: Ask for a decision at the visit, then follow up

A customer who takes your estimate away to compare is more likely to compare on price alone. In our judgement, it helps to quote on site where you can, offer a couple of options rather than one number, and make saying yes easy. Jobber’s quote tools, for instance, let you require a deposit or a payment schedule when the client approves the quote, and clients can pay the deposit online if you use Jobber Payments. A deposit turns a maybe into a commitment.

For the quotes that don’t get signed on the spot, a steady follow-up schedule does the rest. That’s covered in following up on electrical quotes automatically.

What shouldn't I do to screen out price shoppers?

A few things backfire, in our judgement:

Refusing to talk about price at all. “We’d have to see it” for every question sends serious customers to someone who’ll give them a range.

Long, demanding forms. Every extra required field loses some good customers along with the shoppers.

Talking down other contractors. Explain what’s included in your price; don’t make claims about someone else’s work or license.

Treating every lost estimate as a shopper. If your close rate drops across every source at once, look at your pricing, your follow-up and how the estimate was presented before blaming the leads.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about price shoppers for electricians

You’re compared with cheaper options that skip things you don’t. Homeowners don’t always know the difference between a licensed electrician and a handyman, and handymen and unlicensed contractors can undercut your price. Your screening and your estimate both need to make what’s included obvious: permits, inspection, licensed and insured work, a warranty.

Job sizes vary enormously. The same week can bring a small outlet repair and a panel upgrade. A flat price or a photo-based quote suits the small jobs; the in-person visit is for work big enough to justify the time.

Planned upgrades invite comparison shopping. EV charger, generator and panel upgrade customers usually aren’t in an emergency, so they have time to collect several quotes. That’s normal, and it’s exactly why those visits are worth qualifying before you go.

Emergencies are the opposite. A customer with no power in half the house is shopping for speed, not price. Don’t put them through a screening script built for planners.

A worked example: what screening is worth

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your shop runs 40 in-person estimate visits a month, and each one costs about $120 in an electrician’s time and fuel. That’s $4,800 a month in estimate visits. You sell 11 of them, so the visits cost about $436 for each job you sold.

Now you add the qualifying questions, quote small jobs from photos, and require approval before online estimate bookings. Twelve of the requests get handled by phone or photo, so only 28 need a visit, and say you still sell the same 11 jobs from those visits. Visits now cost $3,360 a month, about $305 per sold job, and your close rate on visits goes from about 28% to 39%. You also get back $1,440 a month of an electrician’s time for paid work, before counting any jobs sold from the photo quotes.

The same logic applies to your marketing costs: every visit you skip for a non-buyer lowers your cost per sold job. Our automation add-ons cover messaging, reminders and website chat, and a free visibility audit is a reasonable place to see where your estimates are leaking.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop offering free estimates altogether?

Not usually. Free estimates still win project work. Many shops keep them for larger jobs and charge a credited diagnostic or trip fee for troubleshooting and small repairs.

Is it rude to ask whether a customer has other quotes?

Not if you ask it plainly and without judgement. It tells you how to quote, by phone or in person, and most serious customers don’t mind answering.

Should I give prices over the phone?

Give ranges, not firm prices, for anything you haven’t seen, and say what moves a job up or down the range. Firm prices work for well-defined small jobs you do all the time.

Will screening questions cost me good leads?

A few, if the list is long or the tone is cold. Keep it to a handful of questions, ask them in a friendly way, and skip the script entirely for emergencies.

How do I know if screening is working?

Watch your close rate on in-person estimates and the number of visits per sold job, by lead source. If visits drop and sold jobs hold steady, it’s working.

Key takeaways

A wasted estimate is one that never had a chance, not every estimate you lose.

Ask the same short list of qualifying questions on every call and form, and require approval before online estimate bookings.

Quote or range small jobs from photos; save in-person visits for work worth the drive.

If you advertise free estimates, state clearly which visits are free and which carry a fee.

Cut bargain-hunter searches from your ads and judge the change by visits per sold job.

Want a second set of eyes on your setup?

We'll look at how you show up locally and where calls are leaking, then send you a plain-English breakdown.

Get the free auditBook a growth call

More in this section

How do I follow up on electrical quotes automatically?

Should electricians show prices on their website?

What red flags mean an electrical marketing agency will waste money?

What marketing should I pause while I'm hiring electricians?

What is a good cost per booked job for electrical marketing?

Sources

Request Basics — Jobber Help Center

Quotes Report — Jobber Help Center

Quote Basics — Jobber Help Center

About negative keywords — Google Ads Help

About the search terms report — Google Ads Help

Advertising FAQ's: A Guide for Small Business — Federal Trade Commission

Manage your services on your Business Profile — Google Business Profile Help

How electricians screen out price shoppers before an estimate visit: qualifying questions, photo quotes, credited fees, ballpark ranges and ad fixes.

["https://help.getjobber.com/en/articles/request-basics/", "https://help.getjobber.com/en/articles/quotes-report/", "https://help.getjobber.com/en/articles/quote-basics/", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2453972?hl=en", "https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2472708?hl=en", "https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/advertising-faqs-guide-small-business", "https://support.google.com/business/answer/9455399?hl=en"]
[{"q": "Should I stop offering free estimates altogether?", "a": "Not usually.
