Post the prices that don’t change from house to house, such as your service call or trip fee and any truly flat-rate small jobs, and for panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators and rewiring, explain what drives the price and how you quote instead of posting one number. Whatever you publish has to be a price you’ll actually honor, kept current, with any conditions stated right next to it.

That’s how we approach electrician websites: a page for each kind of work, with the pricing information that helps the right homeowners pick up the phone, and call and form tracking so you can see what a change like this actually did. Our website design page shows how a build works and what it costs, and our electrical contractor marketing page shows how the site fits with search, ads and reviews. The rest of the electrical marketing questions library goes question by question.

Why do so many electricians keep prices off their website?

Usually for reasons that make sense on the job site. No two houses are wired the same, and a job that looks simple on the phone can change once the panel cover comes off. Owners also worry that a posted number will look high next to a handyman’s, or that a homeowner will hold them to it for work nobody has seen.

Fair worries, but in our judgement they argue for posting the right prices, not none. Homeowners compare electricians before they call either way. A site that says nothing about cost leaves them to guess, and the guess is often either too low, which brings in callers you’ll lose at the estimate, or too high, which means some good customers never call at all.

What does showing some pricing do for the calls I get?

In our judgement the effect is on the kind of calls more than the number. Clear pricing information tends to:

Screen out the cheapest-possible-fix shoppers before they cost you a truck roll or an estimate visit.

Shorten office calls, because the caller already knows your service call fee and how quoting works.

Set expectations for bigger jobs, so a homeowner who books a panel upgrade estimate already knows it won’t be priced like a service call.

The trade-off is real: you may get fewer calls, and some callers will fix on the lowest number they saw. That’s why the change should be judged on booked jobs and revenue per job, not call count. If price shoppers are already eating your estimate calendar, keeping price shoppers off your schedule covers the screening side in more detail.

Which electrical jobs can I price online, and which can't I?

A simple test: post a price only for work you’d charge every customer the same way for, every time. For most electrical contractors that sorts out like this, in our judgement:

Usually safe to price: your service call, trip or diagnostic fee; a small set of repeat jobs you truly flat-rate, such as swapping a device or hanging a fixture on an existing box; and any maintenance or inspection visit you sell at a set price.

Explain instead of pricing: panel and service upgrades, EV charger installs, standby generators and whole-home rewiring. The price depends on the house, the existing service, the distance from the panel, permits and sometimes the utility.

Describe your process: commercial work and new construction, which are bid after a walkthrough or from plans.

If you can’t stand behind a price for the basic version of a job, don’t post one. Each of those kinds of work should have its own page anyway, which what an electrician’s website needs covers.

What changes the price of a panel upgrade or EV charger, and should I say so?

Yes. A short “what affects your price” list on each project page does a lot of the work a posted number can’t. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center gives you the honest reasons for EV chargers in plain terms: electricians can tell homeowners whether their home has adequate electrical capacity for charging, some homes don’t have enough capacity for Level 2 equipment, and a qualified electrician can add circuits to provide it. It also notes that installs must comply with local and state codes, that permits may be required, and that in many areas a site installation plan has to be submitted to the permitting authority for approval before installation (Alternative Fuels Data Center).

For a charger page, that becomes a list a homeowner can follow: whether your panel has room, how far the parking spot is from the panel, indoor or outdoor mounting, and what your city requires for permits and inspection. A panel upgrade page can do the same with the size of the new service, the condition of the existing wiring, and any work the utility has to do at the meter. In our judgement, owners who read that list before calling arrive at the estimate expecting a real number, not a bargain. Getting more panel upgrade and EV charger jobs covers how to bring in more of that work.

Should I post my service call or trip fee?

In most cases, yes. It’s the one price nearly every residential caller asks about, it doesn’t depend on the house, and posting it filters out people who expected a free visit. In our judgement the fee only helps if the page also says:

What the fee covers: the trip, the diagnosis, a first block of time, or all three.

Whether it’s credited toward the repair if the customer goes ahead, if that’s your policy.

When it changes, for example nights, weekends and holidays.

That the customer gets the price for the actual repair before the work starts.

Keep the fee identical everywhere it appears: your website, your Google Business Profile, your ads and what the office says on the phone. A homeowner who sees one number online and hears another on the call stops trusting the rest of what you say.

What's the honest way to show a "starting at" price or a range?

Treat it as an advertising claim, because it is one. The Federal Trade Commission’s guide for small business says ads must be truthful and non-deceptive, that advertisers need evidence to back up their claims before the ad runs, and that an ad can be deceptive because of what it leaves out. It lists price among the claims that are material to a buying decision, and it calls advertising something you don’t intend to sell, so you can switch the customer to something pricier, bait and switch. Where a qualifier is needed, it should sit close to the claim, in clear language, not in fine print that contradicts the headline (FTC).

For an electrician that means, in our practical reading:

A “starting at” price is the price you actually charge for the basic version of the job, and the page says what the basic version includes.

If permits, inspection fees, drywall repair or utility work are extra, say so next to the price.

A range should cover most of the jobs you really do, not one unusually easy job at the bottom.

That’s our reading of the FTC’s general guidance, not legal advice. State consumer protection laws apply too, so check with your own advisor if you’re unsure.

Can I run sales or "was" and "now" prices on electrical work?

You can, but the comparison has to be real. The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say a reduction from your own former price is legitimate only if the former price is one you actually, openly offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time. They also say that for “free” and similar offers tied to a purchase, all the terms and conditions should be made clear at the outset, and that raising your regular price to pay for the “free” item can deceive customers (16 CFR Part 233).

So a “panel upgrade special” that knocks money off a price nobody was ever charged is a problem, and “free surge protector with any panel upgrade” only works if the panel upgrade price didn’t quietly go up. In our judgement, offers that save the homeowner a real amount on a real price, with the conditions printed right next to them, are safer and work better than a big discount off an invented number.

Should I put prices on my Google Business Profile?

You can add them, with one catch. Google’s services editor lets service businesses group their services into categories and add details such as descriptions and prices, and Google says a service may be highlighted on your profile when local customers search for something you offer. Custom service names, though, must not include prices, and custom services that break that rule are rejected automatically (Google Business Profile Help).

So “EV charger installation” with the price and what it includes in the details is fine; a service named with a dollar figure in it is not. In our judgement, the prices worth adding there are the same ones worth posting on your website: the service call fee and true flat-rate jobs, kept identical in both places. The rest of the profile work is in optimizing your Google Business Profile.

Should my Google Ads show prices?

Only for the items you’ve already decided to publish. Google Ads price assets add a row of up to 8 cards under a search ad, each with a header, a price, a short description and a link to that item on your site. You need at least 3 items and Google recommends 5 or more; headers and descriptions are limited to 25 characters each, and a price may be shortened or rounded on mobile. A click on a price card costs the same as a click on the ad itself (Google Ads Help).

For an electrician, in our judgement, price assets fit a campaign aimed at small service work, listing your service call fee and a few flat-rate jobs, each linking to its own page. They fit poorly on panel upgrade or generator campaigns, where a single number either scares off good leads or attracts the wrong ones.

How do I know whether showing prices helped?

Compare a month or two before the change with a month or two after, using the same numbers each time: calls and form requests, estimate visits, booked jobs, and revenue per booked job. Your field service software is the place to look. Jobber’s Lead Source Report, for example, shows for each source how many leads you got and how many turned into a request, a quote, a job and an invoice, with the first revenue tied to each lead (Jobber Help).

If calls dropped a little but estimate visits closed at a higher rate and revenue per job held or rose, the pricing is doing its job. If calls dropped and nothing else moved, the page may be scaring off customers you wanted, and the wording or the numbers need another look. Setting up the counting behind this is in tracking which marketing brings in real jobs.

Want to see where your company stands?

A free visibility audit shows where you show up on Google, Maps and AI answers, and what it's costing you in calls.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about pricing for electricians

You’re priced against people who aren’t electricians. Handymen and unlicensed contractors can undercut a licensed shop on small jobs. A price on its own invites that comparison; a price that says what’s included, such as licensed work, permits pulled where required and inspection, gives the homeowner a reason to pay it. Whether to put your license number next to it is covered in showing your license number in marketing.

Permits and inspections vary by town. Requirements come from local and state codes and local permitting offices, so the same EV charger or panel job can carry different permit costs and timing a few miles apart. If you post prices, say whether permit fees are included, and in our judgement price by the towns you actually serve rather than one number for a wide area.

Jobs change after you open the box. Old aluminum branch wiring, a panel with no room, or a service that needs utility work can turn a simple quote into a bigger one. A line on your pricing page saying you’ll give a written price before any extra work starts heads off that argument.

A worked example: fewer calls, more booked jobs

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your website and ads produce 60 calls and requests a month, and 15 of them become booked jobs. You spend $3,600 a month on marketing, so each booked job costs $3,600 divided by 15, or $240.

You post your service call fee, add a “what affects your price” section to your panel upgrade and EV charger pages, and list three flat-rate jobs. The next month you get 48 calls, 12 fewer, but 18 of them book, because fewer people were expecting a free visit or a handyman price. Same $3,600 spent: $3,600 divided by 18 is $200 per booked job, and your office handled 12 fewer calls that were never going anywhere.

If you’re rebuilding the site to do this, our themed website is $3,750, or $3,000 with any of our marketing packages, and every one of our marketing packages includes call and form tracking, so you can run this comparison on your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Will posting prices help my competitors undercut me?

They can see your prices whether you post them or not, since anyone can call for a quote. In our judgement, the risk of a competitor seeing your service call fee is smaller than the cost of good customers never calling because they guessed you were expensive.

Should I say "free estimates" on my website?

Only if every estimate really is free. Under the FTC’s pricing guides, the terms and conditions of any “free” offer should be clear at the outset, so if estimates for small jobs carry a service call fee, say so next to the offer.

Can I list prices in my Google Business Profile services?

Yes, in the service details. Google’s services editor lets you add a price and a description to each service, but custom service names that include prices are rejected automatically.

Do price assets in Google Ads cost extra?

No separate fee. A click on a price card is charged the same as a click on the ad it shows with, and Google says you won’t be charged for more than two clicks per impression.

Should commercial customers see prices on my site?

Usually not. Commercial work is bid from a walkthrough or plans, so a page that explains how you bid, what you need from the customer and how fast you turn quotes around does more than a number.

Key takeaways

Post the prices that hold steady from house to house: the service call fee and true flat-rate small jobs.

For panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators and rewires, explain what changes the price and how you quote.

Any price you publish is an advertising claim: honor it, keep it current, and put conditions right next to it.

Google Business Profile and Google Ads can both show prices;
