How does an electrical contractor get mentioned in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?<\/h2>\n
There’s no sign-up and no special file: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Microsoft Copilot build answers from the same search indexes and business listings regular search uses. An electrical business improves its chances by letting their crawlers read its website, keeping its Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing complete and current, and publishing first-hand pages about the work it actually does, such as panel upgrades, EV chargers and generators in the towns it serves. Then it checks Google’s Generative AI performance report in Search Console, because nobody can promise placement in an AI answer.<\/p>\n

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems: the model pulls relevant pages from the Search index, reads them, and writes a response with links to the pages that support it. It also runs a “query fan-out”, extra related searches, so a question about an EV charger can pull in pages about panel capacity and permits.<\/p>\n ChatGPT’s help center says its search can use partner search providers and an approximate location to find local results, including nearby business listings from third-party providers. Microsoft says Bing and Copilot rely on the same crawling, indexing and ranking foundation as regular Bing search. If your site can’t be crawled and your listings are thin, the AI tools have little to work with.<\/p>\n No. Google says you can apply the same SEO best practices to its AI features as to Search overall, and that a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in regular Search to be eligible as a supporting link, with no additional technical requirements. Its AI guide adds one condition: the site mustn’t be excluded through Search Console’s AI setting, covered in Step 1. There’s no form, fee or partner program for the organic part of those answers.<\/p>\n Be careful with anyone selling a promised spot in ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers. None of these platforms publishes a way to buy a mention, so nobody can honestly promise one, us included. What you can control is whether the tools can read your site and whether what they find is clear, specific and true. Its checklist for AI features says the same: make sure your Business Profile information is up to date. Setting up your electrician profile<\/a> walks through categories, services, service area and hours.<\/p>\n Don’t skip Bing. Microsoft says Bing Places is one of the primary sources for a Bing local listing, but other sources can take priority if your Bing Places data hasn’t been updated in more than 6 months or conflicts with what Bing sees elsewhere. For an electrician, that means the same name, phone, hours and service area on your website, Google profile and Bing Places. In our judgement, leave keywords off the business name too: use the name your trucks and invoices carry. It says content that people find unique, compelling and useful will likely influence your presence in AI search more than anything else in its guide, and it separates “commodity” content, built on common knowledge anyone could write, from “non-commodity” content that brings first-hand experience.<\/p>\n For an electrician, a page titled “5 signs you need a panel upgrade” is commodity: thousands of near-identical versions exist, and an AI model can write it without you. Non-commodity is what only your shop knows:<\/p>\n Write it in plain sections with clear headings, keep the important facts in text rather than only in images, and state the basics outright: the work you do, the towns you cover, whether you take emergency calls, and that you’re licensed and insured. Its guide says creating separate content for every variation of how people might search, including fan-out queries, mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses violates its scaled content abuse spam policy, and that a high number of pages doesn’t make a site higher quality. It also says you don’t need to write in a special way for AI or chop pages into tiny chunks.<\/p>\n In our judgement, the right number of pages for an electrical contractor is one strong page per service you want more of and one per real service area, plus a handful of genuinely useful answers to the questions your office hears every week. Google lists both under things you can ignore for its Search: it says you don’t need llms.txt or other new machine-readable “AI” files or special markup, because Google Search doesn’t use them, and that structured data isn’t required for its AI features and there’s no special schema.org markup to add.<\/p>\n Structured data is still worth having for regular rich results, as long as it matches the visible text on the page. Paying extra for an “AI file” package isn’t, at least for Google. Google says its AI features can show what’s being said about products and services in blogs, videos and forum discussions, but that seeking inauthentic “mentions” isn’t as helpful as it might seem, since its core systems focus on quality content and other systems block spam.<\/p>\n For an electrician, the mentions worth having are earned: genuine reviews that name the job, a chamber or trade association listing, a builder who links to you. Bought or fake mentions are what Google says it filters out. Getting more Google reviews<\/a> covers building the honest version. Search Console now has a Generative AI performance report showing impressions, meaning how many times links to your site were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. If you don’t see the report, Google says that usually means your site hasn’t had enough impressions in those features yet, or that it’s been excluded through the AI control from Step 1.<\/p>\n For ChatGPT and Copilot there’s no equivalent report for a small business, so check by hand once a month. Ask the kinds of questions your customers would, with your town in them (ChatGPT’s help center suggests including a city or postal code when local results show the wrong area): an electrician for a panel upgrade, EV charger installation, a whole-home generator. Note whether you appear and whether the details are right. ChatGPT itself warns results can be incomplete or outdated, so treat one answer as a snapshot.<\/p>\n Then connect it to calls. Tracking which marketing brings jobs<\/a> covers asking callers how they found you and tagging the source in your job software. If ChatGPT shows an old phone number or says you don’t do commercial work, check your website, your Google Business Profile and your Bing Places listing first, then any directory that still carries old details. Bing says stale or conflicting data can lose priority to fresher sources, and recommends IndexNow so Copilot doesn’t keep serving old pages.<\/p>\n A correction can take time to show. In our experience the fix that sticks is boring: one name, one phone number, one list of services and towns, everywhere you’re listed. AI answers sit on top of search, so they move at the speed of SEO, and SEO typically takes 3-6 months to show meaningful organic growth. Some fixes register faster: OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its systems, and Google says a change to the AI control generally takes a few days. New pages, reviews and real mentions build up over months.<\/p>\n If you need the phone ringing next week, ads can bring calls within days of launch. AI visibility is a reason to do the SEO foundation well, not a shortcut. AI answers handle many of those on the results page. In our judgement, the useful page says plainly when a problem needs a licensed electrician and how fast you can come out.<\/p>\n Project research is where AI answers shape the shortlist.<\/strong> EV chargers, panel upgrades, generators and whole-home rewiring are researched for days or weeks before anyone calls. The fan-out questions about load, permits and sizing are where a first-hand local page can be cited.<\/p>\n Licensed versus handyman.<\/strong> Homeowners often can’t tell the difference, and an AI summary won’t sort it out for them. State your license and insurance in plain text on your site and profile; showing your license number<\/a> covers how. That’s our judgement, not a platform rule.<\/p>\n Emergencies still go to the phone.<\/strong> Someone with half the house dark calls whoever looks open on Maps. AI search matters more for planned work than for the no-power call.<\/p>\n These findings are made up to show how the check runs, not a benchmark. Say a two-truck electrical shop runs through the steps above in an hour:<\/p>\n Nothing on that list promises a mention, but every fix also helps regular search and the homeowner who lands on the site.
