Some states require it: California’s contractors board requires the license number in all advertising, including websites, and Texas requires electrical contractors to show it on vehicles, proposals, invoices and contracts, so check your own state board first. Where it isn’t required, show it anyway on your website, estimates, trucks and Google Business Profile description, because the FTC tells homeowners to hire only licensed and insured contractors and to confirm the license with their state, and a number they can look up separates you from an unlicensed handyman.

Trust signals like a visible license number are part of how we build websites for contractors: in text, on every page, next to the call button. You can see how it fits our electrical contractor marketing, or browse more electrical marketing questions.

Do I have to show my license number in my electrical ads?

In some states, yes, and the rules differ on where. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says most states require electricians to be licensed and that requirements vary by state; it points to CareerOneStop’s license finder and your state licensing board for the details. Two examples from state regulators show how different the rules can be:

California. The Contractors State License Board says licensed contractors must include their license number in all construction contracts, subcontracts, calls for bid and all forms of advertising, and it counts websites and online posts that solicit business as advertising. It lists a civil penalty of between $100 and $1,000 for a first offense, and it also requires electrical contractors to show the business name and license number on each commercially registered vehicle, in a clearly visible location.

Texas. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation says an electrical contractor’s proposals, invoices and written contracts must show the license number, and that the contractor’s name and license number must be displayed on both sides of each work vehicle, with the number preceded by “TECL”. Proposals, invoices and written contracts must also show the contractor’s name, address and phone number, and invoices and written contracts must carry a set notice that the work is regulated by TDLR.

Those are two states, not a rule for yours. Check your own state board, and your city if it licenses electricians too, before you print anything. This page is general guidance, not legal advice. Sources: BLS: Electricians, CSLB advertising guidelines and TDLR electricians compliance guide.

Why show it if my state doesn't require it?

Because homeowners are told to look for it. The Federal Trade Commission’s advice on avoiding home improvement scams tells people to consider only contractors who are licensed and insured, to confirm a contractor’s license with their state or county government, and to make sure the written contract includes the contractor’s name, address, phone number and license number.

For an electrician that advice lands harder than for most trades. Homeowners often can’t tell a licensed electrician from a handyman who’ll swap a panel for less, and the license number is the one thing on your marketing they can check in a minute. In our judgement, a number they can look up does more than the words “licensed and insured” ever will. Source: FTC: How to avoid a home improvement scam.

Isn't saying "licensed and insured" enough?

It’s a claim, and claims need backing. The FTC’s advertising guide for small businesses says advertising must be truthful and not deceptive, that advertisers need evidence to back up their claims before the ad runs, and that the FTC looks at implied claims as well as express ones. “Licensed and insured” is an express claim; a license number turns it into something a homeowner can verify.

Watch the stock phrase, too. California’s board says the law prevents contractors from noting in advertising that they are bonded, so the familiar “licensed, bonded and insured” line isn’t one to paste into every market. Sources: FTC: Advertising FAQs and CSLB advertising guidelines.

Where should my license number go?

Anywhere a homeowner decides whether to trust you, plus anywhere your state requires it. A practical list:

Website: the footer of every page, the contact page and the about page, as text rather than only inside an image, so it can be read and copied.

Estimates, invoices and contracts: required in some states and expected by homeowners following the FTC’s advice.

Trucks: required in some states, in a set format.

Google Business Profile description, social profiles and directory listings: where the platform allows it (see the next section).

Ad landing pages: the page an ad sends people to, near the call button.

What an electrician website needs covers the rest of the trust signals that sit beside it.

Can I put my license number on my Google Business Profile?

Not in the business name. Google says your name should reflect your real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery, and that adding unnecessary information to it isn’t permitted and could get the profile suspended. “Bright Electric Lic. 12345” would be the kind of addition Google is talking about. That name is made up.

The description is a better fit. Google says to use it for useful information about your services and the history of your business, and that it can’t contain links or focus on promotions and prices. A line such as “Licensed electrical contractor serving the north side of the county since 2011; license number on our website” is the kind of plain fact it’s built for. Keep it in sync with your site. Setting up your electrician profile covers the other fields. Source: Guidelines for representing your business on Google.

Does Google check my electrical license for Local Services Ads?

For Local Services Ads it can. Google’s US screening page lists license requirements at the state level for electricians (business license and owner license), plus background checks, business registration checks and general liability insurance, each marked as applying to select users. Google calls electrician an urgent category because people call electricians for time-sensitive problems such as exposed wiring, and says that’s why electricians get an additional level of screening.

So the license you advertise and the license you submit to Google should be the same one. Getting verified for Local Services Ads walks through the process. Source: Business screening and verification requirements.

Which number should I show: mine, the company's or my master electrician's?

Show the number your state issues for contracting, the one that lets the business sell and perform the work. Texas is a clear example: TDLR says an electrical contractor must either assign its own master electrician license to the company or employ a licensed master electrician who assigns their license as the “Master Electrician of Record”, and the contractor license number is what goes on the vehicles and paperwork.

Other states set it up differently, so in our judgement the safe default is the business’s contracting license, labeled with the state. If you also want to show individual electricians’ licenses, put them on an about or team page. If you work in more than one state, list each license with its state, and keep an eye on any number that belongs to a person who might leave. Source: TDLR electricians compliance guide.

Can my license number limit what work I advertise?

Yes, in some states it does. California’s board says you can’t advertise construction work outside the classifications you’re licensed for, and gives the example that a masonry contractor can’t advertise electrical work without also holding the C-10 electrical license. If you hold a limited or specialty license, your ads, service pages and Google services list should stay inside it.

It works the other way too. In our view, if you’re adding solar, low-voltage or generator work, check whether your current license covers it in your state before you build pages and ads for it. Source: CSLB advertising guidelines.

Will showing my license number help me rank on Google or in AI answers?

Don’t expect a ranking bump. None of the Google sources we’ve read lists a license number as a ranking factor, so treat it as a trust signal for people, not a search trick.

It still helps with the parts of search you control. A homeowner who lands on your site from Maps, an ad or an AI answer and sees a license number they can check is more likely to call, in our judgement. And a clear, checkable fact on your pages is the kind of plain information AI tools can repeat accurately; showing up in AI search answers covers that side.

What license-number mistakes do electrical contractors make?

An old number. A license that’s been renewed, reissued or replaced, still printed on the trucks and the website.

Someone else’s number. A former master electrician’s license still listed after they’ve left.

The number only in a logo or image. Homeowners can’t copy it into the state lookup, and some readers can’t see it at all.

The wrong state. A number from one state on a page that advertises work across the line.

Ads for work outside your license. Covered above; it’s a real rule in some states.

“Bonded” in California ads. Covered above.

These are our observations of common slips, not a legal checklist. Your state board’s rules are the checklist.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about license numbers for electricians

Licensing is widespread, and homeowners know it matters. BLS says most states require electricians to be licensed, and in our judgement homeowners worry about safety and failed inspections with electrical work more than with most trades. A visible number answers a question they already have.

The handyman problem. Electricians often lose small jobs to handymen and unlicensed workers who quote less. You can’t control their price, but you can make your license easy to check, so the homeowner sees the difference before they choose.

Permits and inspections. Panel upgrades, EV chargers and generators often need a permit and an inspection. In our judgement, a page that shows the license and says you pull the permit tells a homeowner why your quote is higher than the handyman’s, which helps with price shoppers on estimates too.

A worked example: a license-number check on one electrician's marketing

This example is made up to show the check, not a real company. Say a Texas electrical contractor, using TDLR’s own sample number, holds license TECL 1234. In a half-hour review, the owner checks each place the business shows up:

Trucks: two of three show “TECL 1234” on both sides; the newest one has only the logo. Fix before it goes back out.

Estimates and invoices: the job software template includes the name, address, phone and license number, and TDLR’s required notice. Good.

Website: the number is inside the logo image in the header, not in text. Fix: add it to the footer as text and to the contact page.

Google profile: the name is clean; the description says “licensed” with no number. Fix: add a plain line pointing to the license.

Ads: the generator landing page mentions licensing nowhere. Fix: add it near the call button.

None of this costs ad money. If the website is hard to edit, that’s often the bigger problem: a themed website from us is $3,750, or $3,000 with any of our marketing packages, with up to 25 pages and 30 days of post-launch support.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my license number in my Google Ads text?

You can if it fits, but space is short.
