Work out your own natural pace from completed jobs, the share of those jobs where someone asks, and the share of asked customers who post, then raise the ask rate if it falls short. A steady, honest flow beats occasional pushes, which can look like the unusual review patterns Google’s policy says it removes.

A steady review flow is one of the habits we build into Google profile work, alongside replying to every review, as part of our local SEO work for roofing companies. For how reviews fit with every other source of roofing jobs, see our guide on how to get roofing leads, and the roofing marketing questions library covers the rest one at a time.

Does Google want a certain number of new reviews a month?

No. Google doesn’t publish a monthly review pace, or a review count, that a roofing company has to hit. What it says is that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, that how well known a business is draws partly on how many reviews it has, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Source: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

So any specific monthly number you see quoted for roofers is someone’s rule of thumb, not Google’s. That includes ours below. The useful question isn’t “what’s the magic number”, it’s “what pace keeps my profile current and keeps me level with the roofers I’m up against”.

What is review velocity, and why does it matter for a roofer?

Review velocity is just the pace at which new reviews arrive: how many in a month, and how steadily. It’s a separate thing from your total count. A roofer with a big total that stopped collecting a year ago and a roofer with a smaller total that adds a few every month have very different velocity.

Google doesn’t use the term, and it doesn’t say pace is a ranking factor on its own. Our reasons for caring about it are practical judgement:

The total only grows if the pace does. Google says more reviews can help local ranking, and the only way to get more is a steady flow.

Homeowners read dates. In our experience, the first thing a careful homeowner notices after the star rating is how recent the newest reviews are.

Competitors don’t stop. The roofers around you in Maps keep collecting reviews. Standing still is falling behind, slowly.

How do I work out a realistic monthly pace for my company?

Build it from your own jobs rather than picking a round number. Three inputs decide it:

Completed jobs a month: replacements, repairs and any other finished work, from your job software.

Ask rate: the share of those jobs where someone actually asked and sent the review link. This is the input you control.

Post rate: the share of asked customers who go on to post. It varies a lot from company to company, so measure your own for a couple of months.

Multiply them and you have your natural monthly pace. A roofer finishing a handful of replacements a month will have a lower ceiling than a high-volume repair business, and that’s fine. What you’re after is a pace you can hold every month, not a spike you can’t repeat.

If the number comes out lower than you’d like, raise the ask rate first. Getting reviews after a roof replacement walks through who asks, when, and what to say.

So how many new reviews a month should a roofer aim for?

In our judgement, two floors and one benchmark:

Never a zero month. At least one new review every month, including winter, so your newest review is never months old.

Your own natural pace. Whatever your jobs, ask rate and post rate produce when someone asks on every job.

The pace of the roofers next to you in Maps. This is the real benchmark, and you can measure it yourself.

To measure it, search your main roofing searches from the towns you want work in, open the profiles that keep showing up, sort their reviews by newest, and count how many each one got in the last 90 days. Divide by three for a monthly pace. If the roofers ahead of you add several a month and you add one, that gap compounds every month. If you’re already matching them, the count is probably not your biggest problem.

Why do gaps in new reviews hurt?

Google doesn’t say a gap lowers your ranking, so this is our judgement. A gap hurts in three ways:

It looks like a slowdown. A homeowner comparing three roofers after a storm sees one whose newest review is from last spring and two with reviews from last week. The first one looks less busy, or less around.

It stalls your total. Every month without reviews is a month the companies near you add to their counts and you don’t.

It’s hard to restart. In our experience, gaps usually mean the ask fell out of the routine, often when a salesperson or office manager left, and nobody noticed for months.

The fix is almost never a big push. It’s putting the ask back into closing out every job, and checking the pace monthly so the next gap gets caught in weeks, not seasons.

Is it a problem if reviews come in bursts after a storm?

A natural burst isn’t. If you finish a run of replacements after a hail storm and ask every customer, more reviews will arrive in those months, and they reflect real jobs. Google’s policy allows businesses to ask for reviews of genuine experiences without offering incentives. Source: Prohibited & restricted content.

What Google does list as rating manipulation is content showing unusual volumes or patterns of reviews that indicate an effort to manipulate a rating, along with incentivized reviews and reviews from people with a conflict of interest, and it says that content will be removed. Same source. If Google decides a business owner broke its fake engagement rules, it may also restrict the profile, such as blocking new reviews or unpublishing existing ones for a set period. Source: Business Profile restrictions for policy violations.

In our judgement, that’s a reason to keep the ask steady and genuine rather than staging pushes: don’t ask staff or relatives to pile on, never pay or reward anyone for reviews, and if you reach out to a long list of past customers, spread it over a few weeks rather than one afternoon. On rewards specifically, see whether a roofer can offer a discount for reviews.

How do I keep reviews coming in the slow season?

Fewer finished replacements means fewer natural asks, so use the quiet months on two things:

Repairs and smaller jobs. A leak repair or a gutter job is a genuine experience too. Ask those customers the same way.

Past customers. Homeowners whose roofs you replaced earlier in the year, or last year, who were never asked. Send all of them the same short request, not just the ones you remember as happy, since Google doesn’t allow selectively asking for positive reviews.

Make it easy: Google gives every Business Profile a review link and QR code, and says you can share it on receipts, in thank-you emails and at the end of a chat with the customer. Source: Create a Google link or QR code to request reviews. What else to do with a quiet winter is covered in marketing a roofing company in the slow season.

Why did my monthly review count suddenly drop?

Check these in order:

Did the ask stop? The most common cause, in our experience: a new salesperson, a changed job-close routine, or a review text that stopped going out from your job software.

Are reviews delayed? Google says reviews are checked against its policies, which can take a few days. Source: About missing or delayed reviews.

Were reviews removed? Google says reviews removed for policy violations won’t be restored. Same source.

Is the profile restricted? Google says it emails owners before it restricts a profile over fake engagement. Source: Business Profile restrictions for policy violations.

If reviews are coming in but your profile still isn’t showing where it should in Maps, the cause is probably elsewhere; why a roofer is missing from Maps covers the other checks.

Does a faster review pace change my star rating?

Only through the ratings themselves. Google says your review score is the average of all ratings published on Google for your business, and that after a new review it may take up to 2 weeks for the score to update. On Search and Maps, Google shows your score, your total number of reviews and your top reviews. Source: Understand review scores for local places & businesses.

That means a steady pace protects your rating more than it raises it: one unhappy review weighs less on a profile that keeps adding honest ones every month. And a perfect score isn’t the goal. Research from Northwestern’s Medill Spiegel Research Center on products sold online, first published in 2017, found purchase likelihood typically peaks for ratings in the 4.0 to 4.7 range and then falls as ratings approach 5.0. The same research found reviews had a bigger effect on higher-priced items: displaying reviews lifted conversion 190% for a lower-priced product and 380% for a higher-priced one. That’s retail research, not roofing, so treat it as a direction, not a forecast. Source: How Online Reviews Influence Sales.

Google also says honest and balanced reviews help customers decide, and that a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy. Source: Tips to get more reviews.

How should I track review pace each month?

Keep it to a few numbers, looked at once a month, at the company level:

Completed jobs that month.

Jobs where the ask happened and the link was sent.

New Google reviews that month, and your average rating.

The date of your newest review.

Once a quarter, re-count the last 90 days for the roofers you compete with in Maps. If their pace moved and yours didn’t, you know before the gap shows up in calls. Avoid ranking individual salespeople by reviews; Google doesn’t allow asking staff to bring in a set number of reviews, so judge people on whether they asked.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about review pace for roofing companies

Fewer, bigger jobs. A roofing company may finish far fewer jobs a month than a service trade running dozens of calls a day, so its natural ceiling is lower. In our judgement, that makes a missed ask more costly: skipping a few jobs can mean a zero month.

Storm seasons set the rhythm. Busy stretches after storms bring natural bursts of reviews, then quiet months follow. Use the quiet months for repair customers and past customers, so the flow never stops completely.

Homeowners compare after storms. When new crews arrive in town after a storm, homeowners compare local roofers quickly. In our judgement, recent reviews from nearby jobs are one of the clearest signs that you’re the established local company.

The salesperson is the relationship. On many replacements the homeowner only knows the salesperson, so when a salesperson leaves, the ask often leaves with them. Make the ask part of the job-close process, not one person’s habit.

A worked example: setting a monthly review pace

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your company finishes about 30 jobs a month: 10 replacements and 20 repairs. Right now the ask happens on a few replacements only, and you got 3 new Google reviews in the last 90 days.

You check the two roofers that keep showing up next to you in Maps. Sorted by newest, one has 24 reviews in the last 90 days and the other has 15, which is roughly 8 and 5 a month. You’re at 1.

Now ask on every job. If about 1 in 4 asked customers posts, 30 asks a month gives you about 7 or 8 reviews a month, or roughly 22 over the next 90 days. That puts you level with the pack instead of far behind it, from the same customers, with nothing offered in return. Measure your real post rate for a couple of months before you plan around it. Review response and basic review generation are part of our Essentials package at $3,500 a month.

Frequently asked questions

How long should it take to get my first few roofing reviews?

As long as it takes to finish and ask on your first few jobs.
