Reply calmly to every real complaint without discussing the insurance claim in public, report only reviews that break Google’s policies, and use Google’s extortion report if anyone demands payment to remove them. Then fix the cause, which for restoration is usually slow night response or unclear claim expectations, and ask every customer for an honest review at the same point on every job. There’s no fast shortcut: the rating comes back as genuine new reviews come in, and buying reviews can get your profile restricted.

Rebuilding trust shows up where we measure profile work: in the emergency calls the profile brings in and the jobs those calls turn into. Review response and review generation are part of the local SEO work in our restoration marketing packages. The restoration marketing guide covers how reviews fit with every other channel, and the rest of the restoration marketing questions go one question at a time.

Did my rating drop, or did my reviews disappear?

Check this before anything else, because the fixes are different.

The rating fell. New 1-star and 2-star reviews pulled the average down. Google says your score is the average of all ratings published on Google, and that after a new review it can take up to 2 weeks for the updated score to show. That timing is why a bad week often shows up in your stars later.

Reviews vanished. Your count went down. Google uses automated spam detection to remove reviews it identifies as spam, and it says that system occasionally removes legitimate ones too. If that happens, Google’s advice is to contact support. Reviews removed for actual policy violations won’t come back.

Reviews arrived from nowhere. A burst of low ratings from names you can’t match to any job. That may be a policy problem or a scam, covered further down.

Pull your job list for the last few months and match each new negative reviewer to a job before you reply to anything.

What usually drags a restoration company's rating down?

In our judgement, a few causes come up again and again in restoration, and most of them aren’t about the drying work itself:

The insurance claim went badly. The carrier denied part of it, or paid less than the homeowner expected, and the homeowner blames the company that was in their house.

Nobody answered at night. A missed call during a burst pipe feels personal to the person standing in water.

A surprise on the bill. Charges the homeowner didn’t expect, or a dispute over what their policy covers.

The job dragged. Drying took longer than they were told, or the rebuild stalled.

Storm season overload. Crews stretched thin, slower response, less communication. Several rough reviews land in the same few weeks.

Sorting new reviews by cause tells you which ones need a reply, which need an operational fix and which need a report to Google.

What should I do in the first week after the drop?

Match every new negative review to a job, or confirm there isn’t one.

Read them as a set. If three mention night response, that’s your real problem.

Call the real customers you can reach before replying in public, if the account allows it. A conversation sometimes resolves what a reply can’t.

Reply in public to each real review, short and calm, following the rules below.

Report only the reviews that break Google’s policies, with notes on why.

Decide one operational change to stop the main cause from repeating, and tell the crew.

Keep asking every customer for reviews at the usual point. Don’t pause asks while the rating is down.

How do I reply when the review is really about the insurance claim?

Carefully, and without arguing the claim. Google’s tips for review replies say to never share a reviewer’s private information, to acknowledge mistakes without taking responsibility for things outside your control, to explain what you can and can’t do, and to ask the reviewer to call or email you if the situation is complex.

For a claim dispute, in our view, that means:

No policy numbers, claim amounts, adjuster names, carrier names or what the policy covers.

No promises about what insurance will pay or reconsider.

Say what your company did, that coverage decisions are made by the carrier, and who at your office they can call.

Remember that Google notifies the reviewer when you reply, and that your reply is public to every future homeowner reading the profile. Write it for that second audience. Our page on replying to Google reviews has wording that protects homeowner privacy. This is general guidance, not legal or insurance advice.

Which of the bad reviews can Google actually remove?

Only the ones that break its policies. Google’s page on reporting inappropriate reviews says you can report any review, but only reviews that violate its policies are eligible for removal. It asks you not to report a review just because you disagree with it, and says Google doesn’t get involved in conflicts between businesses and customers. An unfair review from a real homeowner about a real claim will usually stay.

The policies most likely to apply after a restoration rating drop, from Google’s Maps content policy:

Not a genuine experience, including content posted on a competitor’s business to undermine it.

Conflict of interest, such as current or former employees or competitors.

Personal information posted without consent, such as a crew member’s full name or face in a photo.

Harassment or offensive content, including unsubstantiated allegations of criminal wrongdoing.

Report from your Business Profile under Read reviews. Google says evaluation typically takes several days, and if a report comes back as no violation, you get a one-time appeal through the Reviews Management Tool, covering up to 10 reviews.

What if someone wants money to make the bad reviews go away?

That’s an extortion scam, and Google has a separate process for it. Google describes these scams as a sudden increase in 1-star and 2-star reviews, followed by someone demanding money, goods or services to remove them. Its extortion reporting page is direct about what to do:

Don’t engage with or pay them, and don’t try to settle it yourself with money or services.

Gather evidence immediately: screenshots of every demand showing date, time and sender, links to each suspicious review, and when the reviews started.

Report it through Google’s merchant extortion form with everything you’ve collected.

Google says it investigates and tells you the result, though it won’t share details of the investigation. Restoration companies can be a target during storm season, in our judgement, because a sudden rating drop costs the most when emergency calls are at their peak.

Can I ask an upset homeowner to update their review?

You can follow up, and Google’s own tips say constructive replies and following up on concerns may even encourage a customer to update their review. Google’s help page on managing customer reviews confirms customers can change their review after reading your reply, and the date on the review changes to the update.

What you can’t do is trade anything for it. Google’s policy doesn’t allow offering incentives, such as payment, discounts or free goods or services, in exchange for revising or removing a negative review. On a restoration job, that rules out waiving part of the deductible, knocking money off the invoice, or a free contents cleaning in return for a better rating.

The clean version: fix the problem, then say something like, “If you feel differently about how it was handled now, you’re welcome to update your review.” Once, with no condition attached, then leave it.

How do I fix what caused the drop so it doesn't happen again?

Match the fix to the cause you found:

Night response. Decide who answers after hours and test it. How fast you need to answer emergency calls covers the options.

Claim expectations. Explain on the first visit, in writing, what your company controls and what the carrier decides. Owners who explain the claims process up front tend to field fewer angry reviews later, in our view, and whether your website should explain claims covers the website side.

Drying updates. A short daily update on readings and expected pickup heads off “nobody told us anything.”

Billing. Walk the homeowner through what they may owe before work starts, not on the final invoice.

Storm overload. Take on only the jobs your crews can serve well. Handling a storm call surge covers triage.

None of this shows up on your profile right away. It shows up as fewer bad reviews over the next few months.

How do I rebuild my rating without breaking Google's rules?

The only rule-compliant way back is more genuine reviews, and more of them than before. Google’s policy lets businesses ask customers to post reviews of their genuine experience, without incentives and without trying to influence the rating or content. It doesn’t allow selectively asking only the happy customers, or discouraging negative reviews.

So the rebuild is mostly process: ask every customer at the same point on every job, text the link the same day, send one reminder. For restoration, equipment pickup on a dry house is a natural moment. Getting detailed reviews after a water job walks through the ask step by step.

The worked example below shows why this takes months, not weeks, and why it’s worth starting the same day the drop happens.

What should I never do to get my rating back fast?

Buy reviews or use a review service that writes them. Google’s policy treats paid reviews as fake engagement and removes them.

Have staff, family or friends post reviews. Google’s policy treats reviews based on a conflict of interest, including employment or family ties, as rating manipulation.

Offer anything for a review or an updated one, including deductible help or a discount.

Ask only the happy customers while skipping the claim disputes.

Start a new profile to escape the old reviews.

The risk is bigger than losing the fake reviews. Google’s page on Business Profile restrictions says that when a business violates its Fake Engagement policy, Google may, besides removing the reviews, stop the profile from receiving new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews for a set period, or show a warning telling customers fake reviews were removed. For a company that lives on emergency calls, a warning on the profile is worse than a 4.5.

Does a rating drop hurt my Local Services Ads too?

It can. Google’s page on reviews and ratings on Local Services Ads says star ratings and number of reviews affect how your business is ranked within Local Services Ads, and that providers with higher ratings and more reviews typically book more jobs. Those reviews are managed in your Business Profile, not the ads account, so the recovery work is the same. If you run LSAs, watch lead volume and cost per lead in the weeks after a drop.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different for restoration companies

A third party decides part of the outcome. In most trades, the customer’s complaint is about your work. In restoration, many complaints are really about the insurance claim, which you don’t control. Your replies have to stay calm and private about that, every time.

Customers are at their worst moment. People call you on the worst day they’ve had in their home. Tempers run high, and a delay that would annoy a roofing customer feels like abandonment here.

Drops come in clusters. Storms and freezes create a surge of jobs, crews get stretched and the rough reviews arrive together, in our judgement. Plan your night coverage and communication for the surge before it starts.

The stars matter at the moment of choice. A homeowner with water on the floor scans the stars and a couple of recent reviews before calling. A drop from 4.9 to 4.5 changes how your listing compares with the next one on the map, which is why it’s worth acting on in the first week.

A worked example: how long a rebuild really takes

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your profile had 60 reviews averaging 4.9 stars, or 294 total stars. A hard storm season brings 6 one-star reviews from claim disputes and slow night response. Now you have 66 reviews and 300 total stars, an average of about 4.5.

To get back to 4.7:

If every new review were 5 stars, you’d need about 34 more (300 + 5 × 34 = 470, and 470 ÷ 100 = 4.7).

If your new reviews average a more realistic 4.8, you’d need about 102 more, because each one only lifts the average a little.

If your company gets a handful of new reviews a month, that’s many months of steady asking, which is why there’s no honest “fast” plan and why skipping the ask on the angry jobs doesn’t help. Fixing the cause matters just as much: every extra 1-star review pushes the finish line further out. If you’d like help with the process, review response and basic review generation are part of our Essentials package at $3,500 a month, and Growth at $4,500 a month adds advanced review generation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a bad Google review myself?

No. You can reply to it, and you can report it if it breaks Google’s policies, but only Google removes reviews. A review you simply disagree with stays up.

Should I reply to a bad review I've already reported?

Usually yes, briefly and calmly.
