Add plurals and synonyms yourself, because Google says negative keywords don’t match close variants, and use phrase match for pairs like “flood insurance” so you don’t block “flood cleanup”. Then check the search terms report every week or two and add new negatives from what people actually typed, without blocking money words like cost, insurance or emergency.

Every click a negative keyword blocks is budget that can go to a homeowner who needs a crew, and we judge ads by what each booked job costs, not by clicks. Negative keyword work is part of the Google Ads management in our local ads service for restoration companies. The restoration marketing guide covers where Google Ads fits among your channels, and the restoration marketing questions library takes the rest one question at a time.

What is a negative keyword in a restoration campaign?

A negative keyword is a word or phrase you tell Google Ads not to show your ads for. Google’s help page About negative keywords uses an optometrist selling eyeglasses who excludes “wine glasses” and “drinking glasses”. The restoration version: you want “water damage restoration”, not “phone water damage”.

Restoration needs more negatives than most trades, in our judgement, because its core words have so many other meanings. Water damage happens to phones and books, mold is also something you pour resin into, flood is also an insurance product and a map, and fire covers everything from extinguishers to fire pits. Every one of those searches can cost you a click.

Which keywords to bid on in the first place is a separate question, covered in which Google Ads keywords a water damage company should target. This page is only about what to keep out.

Which do-it-yourself searches should I block?

Homeowners who want to fix it themselves click on restoration ads and then don’t call. A starting list, in our judgement:

Phrasing: how to, diy, yourself, myself, tips, guide, video, youtube.

Products: kit, spray, bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, killer (as in mold killer).

Learning: what is, what causes, signs of, symptoms.

Be careful with “signs of” and “what causes”. Someone searching “signs of water damage behind wall” may be a homeowner about to call. Check your search terms report before adding those two, and leave them off if they’ve produced calls.

How do I keep job seekers and trainees off my ads?

Restoration is a trade people search to get into, so your ads can show to technicians looking for work and people looking for certification classes. A starting list:

job, jobs, hiring, career, careers, salary, pay, wage, employment, apply.

certification, certified course, class, classes, training, school, exam, test (careful: see below).

technician jobs, estimator jobs, franchise, business for sale, start a restoration business, software, marketing.

Notice the singular and plural pairs. Google says negative keywords won’t match close variants, so blocking “job” doesn’t block “jobs”. You have to add both. Google does say negatives automatically account for casing and misspellings, so you don’t need “Jobs” or “jbos”.

“Test” is the tricky one: “mold test” may be a homeowner wanting an inspection you sell. Use “exam” and “practice test” instead of blocking “test” alone.

Should I block equipment rental and purchase searches?

Yes, unless you rent equipment. People searching for a dehumidifier to rent for the weekend are planning a DIY dry-out. A starting list:

rent, rental, rentals, rent a, for rent, lease.

buy, for sale, used, price of (careful), cheap, best, review, reviews.

dehumidifier, air mover, fan, shop vac, wet vac, moisture meter, ozone machine, hydroxyl.

Two cautions. First, “cheap” and “best” can sit in real homeowner searches like “best water damage company near me”, so watch whether they bring calls before blocking them. Second, don’t block “price” or “cost” wholesale, for the reason covered below. If equipment searches keep showing up, block the equipment names, not the money words.

What about phone, car and other things that get water damage?

This is the list most restoration accounts are missing. “Water damage” is a phrase people use about anything that got wet. A starting list:

Electronics: phone, iphone, android, laptop, computer, tablet, ipad, airpods, watch, tv, camera, speaker.

Vehicles: car, cars, truck, boat, rv, auto, vehicle.

Belongings: book, books, paper, document, photo restoration (unless you do contents), wood table, furniture repair, guitar.

Repair: screen repair, rice.

“Rice” looks odd, but people with a wet phone search “water damage phone rice” all the time, in our experience. If you do contents restoration, keep “photos”, “documents” and “furniture” off the list and handle them in their own ad group instead.

Which help we don't offer should we block, like FEMA or lawyers?

Some searches come from people who need money, legal advice or a different kind of help, not a crew. A starting list, adjusted to what your company actually does:

Assistance: fema, grant, grants, assistance, disaster relief, red cross, aid, low income, free help.

Legal: lawyer, lawyers, attorney, attorneys, lawsuit, sue, claim denied, bad faith.

Landlord and tenant: tenant rights, renters rights, landlord responsible, who pays.

Insurance shopping: “flood insurance”, “homeowners insurance quote”, “insurance agent”.

Keep insurance claim searches separate from insurance shopping. A homeowner searching “water damage insurance claim help” may hire you today, which is why the live page on water damage keywords suggests testing those in their own ad group. Someone shopping for a flood policy won’t.

Do mold, fire, smoke and sewage campaigns need their own negatives?

Yes, because each word has meanings that have nothing to do with your work. Starting lists, in our judgement:

Mold: silicone mold, resin mold, cake mold, soap mold, candle mold, mold in food, bread, cheese, mold toxicity, doctor, symptoms, allergy.

Fire and smoke: fire extinguisher, fire alarm, smoke detector, fire pit, fireplace, fire department, fire station, wildfire map, smoke shop, vape.

Flood: “flood map”, “flood zone”, “flood warning”, “flood insurance”.

Sewage: sewage treatment plant, septic pumping, sewer bill, sewer line repair (unless you do it).

Health searches deserve a word. People searching mold symptoms or toxicity may be worried, but they’re usually looking for medical information, not a remediation crew. Blocking them keeps your ads out of health searches you can’t answer. If you run mold as its own campaign, whether mold remediation needs its own campaign covers the setup, and running Google Ads for fire damage covers the fire side.

Should restoration negatives be broad, phrase or exact match?

Mostly broad, with phrase match for two-word pairs. Google’s rules for Search campaigns:

Negative broad match is the default. Your ad won’t show if the search contains all of your negative keyword’s words, in any order.

Negative phrase match blocks searches that contain the words in the same order, even with other words around them.

Negative exact match blocks only that exact search, with no extra words.

Single words like “phone”, “jobs” and “rental” work as broad match. The two-word pairs are where phrase match earns its keep. A broad negative flood insurance would block any search with both words, including “flood damage cleanup insurance claim”, which you may want. A phrase negative “flood insurance” only blocks searches with those two words together, in that order.

One catch from Google’s search terms tool: when you add a negative straight from the search terms report, it goes in as exact match by default. For a junk search like “how to dry out phone after water damage”, exact match only blocks that one string. Change it to a broad or phrase negative on the junk word instead.

Where should I add negative keywords in my Google Ads account?

Google gives you three places, and restoration accounts use all of them:

Account level. One list that Google says applies across search inventory in Search, Performance Max, Smart and Local campaigns, among others. Put the never-useful words here: jobs, DIY, phone, car. Google caps the account-level list at 1,000 negative keywords.

Shared negative keyword lists. Themed lists you apply to chosen campaigns. Google allows up to 5,000 negative keywords per list and up to 20 lists per account. A “mold meanings” list belongs on the mold campaign; a “contents” list might go on water but not on contents.

Campaign or ad group level. For steering searches between your own campaigns, such as keeping mold searches out of the water campaign when mold has its own.

For Performance Max, Google says negative keywords apply to Search and Shopping inventory only, so they won’t control where its other placements show.

Do negative keywords work on Local Services Ads?

Not in the same way. Google’s page on the Local Services Ads move to Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals says those campaigns stay keywordless: targeting is based on the service categories and areas you offer and the other settings you select, not keyword lists. Google’s migration page doesn’t describe negative keywords for them.

So on LSAs, the controls that do the job of negatives are your job types and service area. If you don’t do sewage cleanup, don’t select it. If you don’t drive two counties over at night, don’t include them. Whether to run Google Ads, LSAs or both covers how the two fit together.

Which searches should a restoration company never block?

Google warns that if you use too many negative keywords, your ads might reach fewer customers. In restoration, these words look like junk but often come from homeowners about to call, in our judgement:

cost, price, how much: “how much does water damage restoration cost” is a buyer.

insurance, claim: test in their own ad group rather than block.

emergency, now, tonight, near me, same day: the searches you most want.

free: “free water damage inspection” may be worth having, if you offer one.

basement, ceiling, carpet, crawl space, wall: where the damage is, not what they want to buy.

commercial: if you do commercial work.

Before adding a negative that touches any of these, filter the search terms report for it and see whether those searches produced calls. How to connect a click to a booked job is covered in tracking which marketing brings booked jobs.

Want to see where your company stands?

A free visibility audit shows where you show up on Google, Maps and AI answers, and what it's costing you in calls.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about negative keywords for restoration

The words are borrowed. Water damage, mold, flood, fire and smoke all mean something else to someone. A plumber’s account has a short junk list; a restoration account’s is long and keeps growing.

Storms change the searches. After a big storm or freeze, the search terms report fills with relief, FEMA and insurance shopping searches alongside real emergencies. Check it more often in the weeks after an event, and add negatives as new junk patterns show up.

Insurance sits in the middle. Some insurance searches are buyers and some are shoppers. That’s why restoration accounts need phrase negatives for insurance shopping, while claim searches get tested rather than blocked.

Clicks are expensive. Emergency restoration searches tend to cost more per click than everyday service searches, in our judgement, so every junk click costs more than it would for many other trades.

A worked example: what junk clicks cost per booked job

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your water damage campaign gets 220 clicks a month at an average of $18 a click, so $3,960 in spend, and it books 9 jobs. Your cost per booked job is $3,960 ÷ 9, or $440.

Now you open the search terms report and find 35 of those clicks came from phone water damage, rental and job searches. That’s $630 of spend that couldn’t have booked a job. Block those, and the same 9 jobs would have cost $3,330, or $370 each.

In practice, Google will usually spend your budget on other searches rather than hand the $630 back, so the real gain is that money going to searches that can book. Judge it a month later the same way: spend divided by booked jobs. If you’d like help, Google Ads management is part of every package; our Growth package at $4,500 a month covers up to $5,000 a month in Google Ads spend and adds Local Services Ads management, and ad spend is paid to Google separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many negative keywords does a restoration account need?

There’s no right number. Start with the groups on this page, then add what the search terms report shows. Google caps the account-level list at 1,000 negatives, which is plenty for most local accounts.

How often should I check for new negative keywords?

In our judgement, every week or two for a new campaign, monthly once it settles, and more often after a storm or freeze, when new kinds of searches show up.

Should I block competitor names as negative keywords?

That’s a strategy choice, not a junk filter. Some owners block other companies’ names to avoid paying for searches meant for someone else; others bid on them. Decide deliberately rather than by default.

Can I copy a negative keyword list from the internet?

As a starting point, yes, but read every word against what your company does. A generic list may block “mold”, “commercial” or “insurance” searches you want.

Do I need to add misspellings like "dehumidifer"?

No. Google says negative keywords automatically account for casing and misspellings. You do need to add plurals and synonyms, because negatives don’t match close variants.

Why do junk searches still show up after I add negatives?

Usually a missing plural or synonym, or a negative added as exact match from the search terms report. Google also notes your ad can still show if the negative word comes after the sixteenth word of a very long search.

Key takeaways

Start with six groups: DIY, jobs and training, equipment, other water damage, help you don’t offer, and other meanings of mold, flood and fire.

Add plurals and synonyms yourself;
