Most delays come from mismatched business names across the profile, insurance and licenses, profile access problems, and field workers or subcontractors who haven’t completed their background checks. Some states also require extra licenses for mold work. The old Google Guaranteed badge is gone; passing verification now earns the Google Verified badge.

Getting a restoration company through Local Services Ads setup and managing it afterward is part of our local ads work for restoration companies, with LSAs included from the Growth package up. The restoration marketing guide covers how LSAs fit with the other channels, and the restoration marketing questions library takes the rest one question at a time.

What does Google check before a restoration company can run LSAs?

Google’s US list for the Water damage services category, which it describes as professionals who clean and inspect water damage issues such as mold, sewage and paint damage, includes:

Background checks on the business and the owner.

Business registration checks on the business and its representative.

General liability insurance.

Licenses: a state-level business license, a state-level owner license and IICRC certification.

Every item on that list is marked “select users only”, so not every restoration company is asked for all of them; Google says your Local Services dashboard shows what’s required for your business. On top of the category checks, Google says every Local Services advertiser needs a public, verified Google Business Profile, and its screening can also include minimum review requirements. Sources: Business screening and verification requirements (United States) and Understand the screening and verification process.

How long does LSA verification take?

Google says the screening and verification process takes 3–4 weeks on average after you submit your documents, and recommends starting as soon as possible after you create the account. Two things can change that:

Faster: Google runs a risk-based review on select US sign-ups. A business that looks low-risk may get accelerated verification and the Google Verified badge quickly, then has 14 days to complete the remaining steps to keep its ad serving.

Slower: missing documents. If you need a D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet and don’t have one, Google says that application can take up to thirty days on its own.

Google also offers pre-badge ads, which let you receive leads after passing the preliminary checks while you finish the rest. In our judgement, a restoration company that gathers its paperwork before signing up usually feels the 3–4 weeks; one that starts hunting for documents afterward feels much longer. Sources: Business screening and verification requirements (United States), Understand the screening and verification process and Getting started with Local Services Ads (United States).

Who has to pass the background check?

Where the category requires it, Google says background checks cover the business, its owners and its field worker roster: employees, independent contractors, subcontractors, temporary workers and anyone else who performs core services in customers’ homes or workplaces. Office managers, clerical staff and customer support people who don’t go to customers don’t need one.

For owners and field workers, the check covers identity and criminal history. At company level, it covers civil litigation history such as judgments and liens. Google says there’s no credit check, businesses aren’t charged for the background check, and it’s run by background check partners who keep the results confidential between them and the business.

If a business fails and the final decision stands, Google says it must wait an additional 30 days to reapply, and 180 days after a second denial. In our judgement, the restoration-specific snag is the roster: the subcontractors and temporary help you bring in on a big loss count too, if they do the work in the customer’s property. Source: Understand the screening and verification process.

What insurance paperwork does Google want?

A certificate of insurance that passes Google’s upload rules for North America:

Active and valid for at least two weeks after you submit it.

In the same name you’re advertising under; if it’s different, add a Doing Business As (DBA) document.

With a business address that covers the service area you want to advertise in.

Showing a policy number, and at or above the minimum amount for your category and location, which the upload screen shows you.

Ideally signed, legitimate and not editable.

In our judgement, most restoration delays here are mismatches rather than missing coverage: the certificate in the LLC’s name and the Google profile under the trade name, or a policy that renews days after you upload it. Ask your agent for a certificate in exactly the name on your Google Business Profile before you start. Source: Understand the screening and verification process.

Which licenses will Google look for?

Google says it verifies applicable state-level licenses for businesses and owners or managers “to the extent possible”, checks them against state databases, and shows the verified licenses on your provider profile. Businesses must also confirm they hold any county or city licenses that apply and that all service professionals are properly licensed. If you serve several locations, you need business and employee licenses for each.

Mold is where restoration gets tricky. Google’s description of the water damage category notes that professionals in some states may need additional licenses to perform mold remediation or assessment. Licensing rules are set by states and local governments, not by Google, so check what applies where you work; we can’t tell you what your state requires. Sources: Understand the screening and verification process and Business screening and verification requirements (United States).

Does a restoration company need IICRC certification for LSAs?

It’s on the list. Google includes IICRC certification among the license requirements for water damage services, marked for select users, with a footnote that professionals with this certification may need additional licenses to repair water damage issues. So in our judgement, treat it as likely to be asked for, and if you don’t hold it, find out from your dashboard whether it’s required for you before you assume it isn’t.

The IICRC runs a Global Locator that consumers can use to find certified firms and technicians, and it publishes a list of companies it considers invalid for promoting the Certified Firm status. In our judgement, make sure your firm’s listing there matches the name you’re verifying with Google, and never claim the status in an ad or on your website unless your firm holds it. Sources: Business screening and verification requirements (United States) and IICRC Global Locator.

Why does my Google Business Profile hold up LSA verification?

Because Google connects your Local Services ad to your Business Profile, and won’t show the ad until that connection is made. Google says the person completing the business checks must be an owner or manager of the profile, even if someone else in the business already claimed and verified it. If they aren’t, the dashboard offers an option to request access; other steps can continue meanwhile, but the ad can’t appear in search results until this one is done, which can take up to a day to show as complete.

In our judgement, the common restoration snags are a profile claimed years ago by a former office manager or an old marketing vendor, duplicate profiles from a past rebrand, and a profile name that doesn’t match the insurance and license paperwork. Fix those first. Optimizing your restoration Google Business Profile covers the profile itself, and which profile categories to pick covers the category choice. Source: Understand the screening and verification process.

What are the business registration and representative checks?

For select US businesses, Google verifies registration with a D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet. If you can’t get one, Google accepts a Secretary of State business registration, an IRS EIN document or a Department of Revenue registration instead. Google’s advice is to use the same organization name and address as your Business Profile when you look up or apply for the number.

The representative check confirms that whoever sets up the account can act for the business: you pick the person from a list supplied by Dun & Bradstreet or upload a document linking them to the business, then an identity partner checks an unexpired government photo ID. Google’s own tip is the one that saves the most time: make sure the representative’s full name and the business’s legal name match exactly across every document. Google says advertisers are regularly re-evaluated and may be asked to repeat checks. After your account moves into Google Ads, significant updates to your business name, storefront address or primary category require a verification review that typically takes 24 to 48 hours, and your campaign may pause while it happens.

Adding a new industry in Local Services also sends you back to the business verification page to upload the extra requirements for it. In our judgement, plan rebrands, moves and new service lines around this: change one thing at a time, outside your busiest season, and keep insurance and license paperwork current so a re-check doesn’t stall on an expired document. Existing advertisers who had completed verification earned the new badge automatically; new advertisers get it once they meet all the verification requirements. Google also says the badge change doesn’t affect Local Services Ads ranking.

The move into Google Ads matters too. Google says a completed verification and the Google Verified badge carry over automatically, and insurance and license reverification are no longer required after the move. Restoration wasn’t named in the first group that moved in August 2026; Google lists service-area businesses without storefronts for late 2026 and remaining categories for 2027. For now, Google says new pay-per-lead campaigns are still set up through Local Services rather than inside Google Ads. It’s less clear for a company whose main work is fire, smoke or commercial jobs, since the category is water damage.

Before you start, weigh what the leads will cost against what a booked job is worth. What restoration LSA leads cost covers the pricing side, and whether to run Google Ads, LSAs or both covers how they fit with search ads.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about LSA verification for restoration companies

Crews change with the work. In our judgement, restoration companies bring in subcontractors and temporary help on big losses more than most trades, and Google’s background checks can cover anyone doing core work in a customer’s property.

Mold adds a licensing layer. Google notes some states may require additional licenses for mold remediation or assessment, on top of the category’s standard checks.

Certification is part of the category. IICRC certification appears in Google’s water damage requirements, which is unusual among home service categories.

Names drift. In our judgement, restoration companies that bought, merged or rebranded often have an LLC name, a trade name and an old franchise or profile name in circulation. Pick one and make every document match it.

A worked example: a verification checklist before you sign up

This is an illustration of the order we’d suggest, not Google’s own sequence or a promise of timing. Say you run a three-truck water damage company under a trade name, with the LLC as the legal entity and two subcontractors who help on big jobs.

Google Business Profile: confirm who owns the profile and make sure the person who’ll do the LSA setup is an owner or manager. Fix the name if it doesn’t match your paperwork.

Business registration: look up your D-U-N-S number with the same name and address as the profile. If you don’t have one, apply now, or have your Secretary of State registration or EIN document ready.

Insurance: ask your agent for a signed certificate in the advertised name, showing the policy number, with a DBA document if the LLC name differs, and check it won’t expire in the next few weeks.

Licenses and certification: gather state business and owner licenses, local licenses, any mold license your state requires, and your IICRC certification.

People: list the owners and every field worker, subcontractors included, who’ll need a background check, and tell them it’s coming.

With all five ready on day one, the wait is mostly Google’s. On our side, Local Services Ads management starts at the Growth package ($4,500 a month), which also covers Google Ads management up to $5,000 a month in ad spend; Essentials ($3,500 a month) doesn’t include LSAs. Ad spend and lead costs are paid to Google separately, and we can’t speed up Google’s checks.
