Check the tracking first, then the searches and locations behind the clicks, then the mobile page, then your call log. Fix them in that order before you raise or cut your budget.

Finding where website visitors drop off is part of how we build and run restoration company websites and the ads that send people to them, with call and form tracking set up so the phone log and the reports agree. It sits inside our restoration marketing work. The restoration marketing guide covers why a fast, clear site matters in the first place; this page is the troubleshooting list for when the traffic is there and the calls aren’t. More owner questions are in the restoration marketing library.

Is my website really getting no calls, or are the calls just not being counted?

Start here, because it’s the cheapest problem to find. Pull your phone carrier’s or phone system’s call log for the last month and count the calls. Then count the calls your marketing report says came from the website. If the log shows far more calls than the report, you don’t have a calls problem. You have a counting problem.

Google Ads tracks website calls in several ways, and some don’t count calls at all:

Calls to a number on your website: Google can swap your number for a Google forwarding number for people who clicked an ad, and counts a call only when it lasts at least as long as the minimum call length you set. Shorter calls aren’t counted.

Clicks on a number on your mobile website: Google says it can only track the tap, not the phone call itself.

Calls that never touched an ad: someone who found you in the regular results or Maps, or who wrote your number down and called later, won’t show up in your ad reports at all.

A homeowner standing in a wet basement often reads the number off the page and dials it from another phone, or calls from the Google profile instead of the site. In our experience that makes restoration reports undercount more than most. Tracking which marketing books restoration jobs covers setting up numbers so every call has a source. Source: About phone call conversion tracking (Google Ads Help).

Mistake 1: Paying for clicks from people who will never call

The click count doesn’t say who clicked. The search terms report in Google Ads does: Google describes it as a list of the search terms a significant number of people used that resulted in your ad being shown, and says the searches listed can be different from your keyword list, depending on your keyword matching options. For a restoration company, look for these in the list:

Do-it-yourself searches: how to dry carpet, renting a dehumidifier, how to get rid of mold yourself.

Job seekers: restoration technician jobs, water mitigation jobs, certification classes.

Insurance and aid questions: whether a policy covers a leak, FEMA help, how to file a claim.

Wrong services: pool water delivery, basement waterproofing, gutter cleaning, or roofing searches if you don’t do roofs.

Each of those can cost the same as a click from a homeowner with water on the floor. Add the bad ones as negative keywords and tighten the keywords that let them in. Negative keywords for restoration Google Ads has the list to start from, and choosing water damage keywords covers which searches to pay for in the first place. Source: About the search terms report (Google Ads Help).

Mistake 2: Counting blog traffic as if it should ring the phone

If most of your clicks are free clicks from Google’s regular results, open Search Console’s Performance report and switch to the queries view. Google says it shows which queries are bringing traffic to your site, and you can group it by page too.

Restoration sites often attract a lot of reading traffic: what mold looks like, whether insurance covers a burst pipe, how long drywall takes to dry. Those visitors are learning, not hiring, and many live nowhere near you. In our judgement that traffic still builds trust, but it shouldn’t sit in the same number as visits to your water damage, fire damage and mold pages.

Split the report: service pages and the homepage in one bucket, articles in the other. Judge the first bucket on calls. If the service pages get few clicks, your problem is visibility for the searches that matter, not a website that fails to convert. Source: Performance report (Search results) (Search Console Help).

Mistake 3: Showing ads to people outside your service area

Google Ads location targeting, by default, reaches people who are in or regularly in your targeted area and also people who have shown interest in it. Google says people show interest through the words they search, places they were recently, or content they look at about the location. That default is called Presence or Interest. The other choice, Presence, shows ads only to people likely to be located, or regularly located, in your area.

For a company whose crew has to drive to the job, the interest half is usually wasted. Someone researching your city from another state, or a relative far away reading about a storm that hit your town, can click your ad and never call. Switching to Presence and excluding areas you won’t serve is, in our view, one of the first changes a restoration account needs. Google also notes that location targeting is a best effort based on many signals, so check the locations report after the change rather than assuming it’s perfect. Source: About advanced location options (Google Ads Help).

Mistake 4: Making the phone number hard to tap

Pick up your own phone, search the way a homeowner would, and click through to your site. Then ask: can you call in one tap without scrolling or zooming? Google’s own advice for mobile landing pages lines up with what a panicked homeowner needs:

Keep it uncluttered, easy to read and quick to load. Google writes that prospects will wait only seconds for a mobile page to load before going elsewhere, and points to its free PageSpeed Insights tool.

Avoid full-screen pop-ups. Google says full-size pop-ups, ads or live chat boxes that cover the site can disrupt the experience.

Keep forms short. Google notes that forms are inconvenient on mobile and can cause visitors to leave.

For a restoration site that means a tap-to-call number in the header on every page, a short line saying you answer now, and nothing covering it. Source: 5 things to consider when optimizing your mobile landing page (Google).

Mistake 5: Sending every click to the homepage

A homeowner who searched for burst pipe cleanup and lands on a homepage that leads with fire damage and rebuilds has to start over. Google uses a similar example: an ad for a specific product should go to that product’s page, not a general page or the homepage, which forces people to search all over again.

Google Ads also rates landing page experience for each keyword as above average, average or below average, and says better pages are usually well organized and have text that relates to the person’s search. A below average rating on your water damage keywords is a sign the page doesn’t match what people searched.

Send water damage clicks to a water damage page, mold clicks to a mold page, and fire clicks to a fire page. What a restoration landing page should include covers what goes on that page. A site full of stock photos, with no town names, no license or certification details and no reviews, gives them a reason to hit the back button and call the next result.

What we look for when a site gets visits but no calls:

Real photos of your trucks, crews and drying equipment, with no homeowners’ faces or addresses.

The towns you serve, named, so a visitor knows you’ll come to them.

Your license, insurance and certifications, stated plainly.

Recent reviews that mention the kind of job the visitor has.

Honest response promises. Only say you answer around the clock if you do.

None of that is a Google rule. It’s our judgement about what a stressed homeowner checks in the few seconds before deciding whether to call.

Mistake 7: Calls come in and nobody answers

Sometimes the website works and the phone is the problem. Open your call log and filter for missed, abandoned or voicemail calls, then sort by hour. A restoration company that answers well from 8 to 5 can still lose most of its night and weekend calls, and those are often the emergencies.

Two quick checks:

Ring time and routing. Call your own number from the website at 9 p.m. on a Saturday. Count the rings. Notice who picks up, or whether it goes to a full voicemail box.

Ad hours versus answer hours. Google Ads lets you set call assets to show your number only when your business can take calls. If your phone isn’t covered at night, don’t advertise a number that rings out at night.

What missed calls cost a restoration company puts a dollar figure on those rings, and how fast to answer emergency calls sets the standard. They’ll fill out the form or type into a chat box, especially late at night. If those messages land in an inbox nobody checks until Monday, the website did its job and the lead died anyway. Submit your own form and start a chat after hours, then time how long a person takes to reply. Send form alerts to the phone of whoever is on call, and cut the form to name, phone, address and what happened.

Are bots or competitors clicking my ads?

It’s the first thing many owners suspect and usually the last thing to blame. Google defines invalid clicks as clicks that don’t show real interest, such as accidental clicks, bots and clicks meant to run up your costs. Google says you aren’t charged for clicks its systems find invalid, that they’re filtered out of your reports, and that if it finds them after billing you, you get a credit where appropriate and possible.

In our judgement, wrong searches, wide location settings and a hard-to-use mobile page waste far more money in a typical restoration account than click fraud does. Fix those first. Source: Invalid clicks: Definition (Google Ads Help).

In what order should I fix a website with clicks and no calls?

Count the calls. Phone log against reports. If they don’t match, fix tracking before changing anything else.

Check who clicked. Search terms in Google Ads, queries and pages in Search Console. The number, the towns you serve and a believable promise about response time need to be the first things on the page.

A lot of restoration traffic is research. Mold, insurance and drying questions bring readers who won’t call today. Judge that traffic separately from your service pages.

Storms bring clicks from far away. News coverage of a storm in your area draws attention from people who don’t live there. Location settings matter more for you than for a trade without storm spikes.

Your site serves more than homeowners. Property managers and adjusters visit too, and a thin site loses them as well.

A worked example: finding the calls behind 400 clicks

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say your reports show 400 website clicks in a month and 10 tracked calls. That looks like fewer than 3 calls per 100 clicks.

Now you dig in. Search Console shows 150 of those clicks went to articles about drying carpet and mold, so you set them aside. The search terms report shows 70 ad clicks came from job seekers, do-it-yourself searches and people outside your area. That leaves 180 clicks from people who might actually hire you.

Then you compare the phone log with the report and find 9 calls the report never counted: people who read the number off the site and dialed it from another phone, or who went back and called from your Google profile. So the real count was 19 calls from 180 useful clicks, about 11 calls per 100 clicks. The website wasn’t failing; the report was measuring the wrong things. Your next month’s work is cutting the 70 wasted ad clicks and fixing tracking, not rebuilding the site.

For reference, our Essentials package is $3,500 a month and includes one landing page plus call, web and form tracking with basic attribution; ad spend is paid to Google separately.

Frequently asked questions

How many calls should a restoration website get per 100 clicks?

There’s no reliable public benchmark for restoration, and it varies by market, service and how much of your traffic is reading traffic.
