Google’s Business Profile guidelines ask for a number under your direct control that connects to your own business, not one that sends callers somewhere else, and they allow additional numbers. In practice, that means a tracking number as the primary number on your Google profile with your main line added as an additional number, numbers that swap on your website for visitors without changing your main number in the page code, and your main number alone on directories, insurance and partner lists. The damage, when it happens, comes from tracking numbers leaking into directories and from old numbers that get cancelled while they’re still listed.

Call tracking with recording and transcription, source tagging and a real-time dashboard come with every one of our packages, and so does business listing cleanup, with your name, address and phone synced across 50+ directories, so each channel can get credit for its calls while your main line stays consistent. The follow-up side, what happens after the tracked call rings, is what our automation work covers. You can see how this fits water, fire and mold work on our restoration marketing page, and the bigger picture of channels and budgets is in the restoration marketing guide. The rest of the restoration marketing questions library goes question by question.

Why would a tracking number affect my rankings at all?

Because Google builds your local listing from more than what you type into your profile. Google’s page on how it sources business information says profiles are compiled from publicly available information such as crawled web content (including your own website), licensed data from third parties, and users who contribute factual information such as phone numbers.

Google’s local ranking tips say local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up for relevant searches. So the worry isn’t the tracking number itself. It’s that a tracking number ends up on directories and data sources as if it were your main number, and Google’s picture of your business gets less consistent. In our judgement, that’s the real risk to manage, and it’s avoidable.

What do Google's rules say about the phone number on my profile?

Google’s guidelines for representing your business set out the phone rules:

Provide a phone number that connects to your individual business location.

Use a local phone number instead of a central call center helpline whenever possible.

Don’t provide numbers that redirect or refer users to landing pages or phone numbers other than those of the actual business.

The number must be under the direct control of the business.

Additional phone numbers can be used on Business Profiles and other local surfaces.

The guidelines don’t mention call tracking by name. Our reading: a local tracking number that rings straight through to your own office or on-call phone, in an account you control, connects to your business. A number owned by a lead service that routes the caller to whoever buys the lead does not, and that’s the setup that puts a profile at risk.

How should I set up a tracking number on my Google Business Profile?

Put the tracking number in the primary phone field and your main business line in the additional phone field. CallRail’s Google Business Profile integration works this way: it swaps the profile’s primary number for a tracking number and sets your actual business number as a secondary number to keep your name, address and phone consistent. CallRail’s page on using CallRail with a Google profile describes it the same way, and says the tracking number gives you data on every lead with no risk to your Google search position. That’s the vendor’s claim, but it fits Google’s guidelines as we read them.

Three checks for a restoration profile:

Use a local number. Pick a tracking number with your local area code, in line with Google’s local-number preference.

Ring the phone that’s answered at 2 a.m. The tracking number should forward to the same line or on-call phone your emergency calls already reach.

Tag the website button too. CallRail’s integration can add tracking tags to your profile’s website link, so calls from people who clicked through to your site are credited to the profile as well.

For the rest of the profile, optimizing your restoration Google profile covers categories, services and reviews.

Will tracking numbers on my website confuse Google?

Not if they’re added the usual way. Website call tracking uses dynamic number insertion: a script swaps the number a visitor sees based on how they arrived. CallRail’s source tracking basics says its script displays a number to website visitors without changing the phone number in the HTML. Your main number stays in the page code; the swap happens in the visitor’s browser.

Two habits keep it that way:

Hard-code your main number in the header, footer and contact page, and let the script do the swapping. Don’t type a tracking number into the page itself.

Put your main number in your structured data. Google’s local business structured data documentation describes the
telephone
property as a business phone number meant to be the primary contact method for customers.

Google doesn’t publish how it treats swapped numbers, so in our judgement the safest setup is the one where every version of your site that could be read, with or without the script, shows your main number in the code.

Where should my main number stay, with no tracking number at all?

Everywhere your business is listed as a business rather than advertised:

Directories and citation sites, including home-service directories and your industry association listings

Your profile on Apple Maps, Bing and Yelp

Insurance carrier, adjuster and program vendor records

Your Secretary of State, license and certificate of insurance paperwork

Property manager and commercial vendor files

These are the sources that feed the rest of the web, and in restoration they’re also the records an adjuster or facility manager will call from months later. A tracking number in any of them is a number you can never safely cancel. Whether Angi or HomeAdvisor listings help you rank covers the directory side.

Can a directory or listing service overwrite my tracking number?

Yes, and the reverse can happen too. CallRail’s integration page warns that if you manage your Google profile through a directory service, the integration can fail unless you turn off syncing for the listing’s phone number, because those services can overwrite the tracking numbers in your listings. When that happens, calls stop being tracked.

The same problem in the other direction is what hurts consistency: a listing service set to push “the phone number on the Google profile” can spread your tracking number across every directory it manages. In our view, if you use a listing service, set its phone number to your main line by hand and turn off any setting that copies the Google profile’s number.

Do I need different numbers for Google Ads and Local Services Ads?

Usually not, because both can show Google’s own forwarding numbers. Google’s call reporting page says that with call reporting turned on, Google assigns a Google forwarding number to your ad so calls can be counted as conversions. For Local Services Ads, Google’s page on receiving leads says the number on your ad is a Google forwarding number that forwards to your business number, changes often, and can’t be chosen. The Google Ads forwarding numbers belong to Google, can change or be reassigned, and can’t be used outside call reporting and website call tracking, so they’re never a number to put on a directory or a van.

The same page says that if you’d rather show your own number or use third-party call tracking, you can turn call reporting off so your direct business number appears on your ads instead. For restoration, in our judgement, it’s simpler to keep Google’s own call reporting on and use your own tracking numbers for the Google profile, the website, print and partners. Tracking which marketing books jobs covers how those numbers become cost per signed job.

Should my vans, yard signs and referral partners get their own numbers?

Vans and signs, yes, if you want to know what they produce. CallRail’s source tracking basics lists printed materials such as flyers, signs and business cards among the offline sources a source tracking number can track, and recommends one source tracking number per campaign so reports stay accurate.

Referral partners are a judgement call. A plumber or property manager who sends you water jobs can get a number of their own on the card they hand out, so you can see exactly what that relationship produces. In our view it’s worth it for your biggest few partners. Keep their vendor records on your main line, though, so the number they’ve saved still works if you ever stop tracking.

What happens if I change call tracking companies or marketing agencies?

This is where tracking numbers most often hurt. If the numbers belong to an agency’s account and the agency cancels them when you leave, every place they’re listed goes dead: the Google profile, old mailers, van wraps, and any directory that picked one up. In restoration, that dead number is also on the magnets and stickers you left in customers’ homes.

Before you sign up, confirm the tracking numbers are in an account you control or can be moved to you, and when you leave, keep them forwarding until you’ve replaced them everywhere. Who owns your website and ad accounts covers the rest of what to get in writing.

How would I know if tracking numbers had hurt my rankings?

Search for your business by name and by each tracking number. If a tracking number shows up on directories you didn’t put it on, it’s leaking and needs to be corrected back to your main line. Then check your Google profile’s phone fields after any change by a listing service or agency.

If your Maps visibility drops, look at the usual causes first: a category or service-area change, a suspension, a new competitor, a slowdown in reviews. A correctly set tracking number on the profile, with your main number as an additional number, is rarely the cause, in our judgement; a wrong number or one that doesn’t ring through is a different matter. Getting back into the Map Pack walks through the checks.

Not sure which of these is costing you jobs?

A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about call tracking for restoration companies

Every missed call is an emergency someone else gets. A tracking number that fails to forward at night costs more in restoration than in almost any trade, so test every number after hours, not just during the day.

Your number lives in more places. Adjusters, carriers, program vendors and property managers keep your number in their own files. Those records should only ever hold your main line.

Calls come in surges. During a storm, call tracking shows which numbers are ringing unanswered. That’s often the most useful thing it reports all year.

Out-of-area calls are common. Tracking by source shows which channel is sending calls from outside your service area, so you can fix the targeting rather than guess.

A worked example: a listing cleanup after an agency change

These numbers are made up to show the process, not a benchmark. Say you search your business name and phone numbers across the directories you know about and find your main line on 31 listings, a tracking number from a previous agency on 6, and your old van number on 2.

Keep the old numbers forwarding. Before anything else, make sure the agency’s tracking number and the old van number still ring your phone.

Correct the 6 listings back to your main line, and the 2 with the van number too.

Set the Google profile up properly: a new tracking number you control as primary, your main line as the additional number, and a tagged website link.

Check again in a few months before you let the old numbers go, since some directories update slowly.

Now each source has its own number. Say the next month the Google profile number logs 26 calls and the website numbers log 17. You can see which one books more water jobs, and your 39 listings all agree on one main number. Call tracking with source tagging comes with every one of our packages; the cleanup work is the part you have to make sure somebody actually does.

Frequently asked questions

Is NAP consistency still a ranking factor?

Google’s local ranking help doesn’t use the term; it says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up. CallRail says most industry experts agree consistency no longer carries much impact, but still calls it good practice to keep your main number connected. In our view, it costs little to keep it consistent.

Can I use a toll-free tracking number on my Google profile?

Google’s guidelines ask for a local number instead of a central call center helpline whenever possible, so we’d use a local tracking number on the profile.

Should the tracking number show the same caller ID as my main line?

Caller ID is a setting in most call tracking tools. What matters for Google is that the number reaches your business; what matters for you is that your staff can tell a tracked emergency call from a vendor call.

How many tracking numbers does a restoration company need?

One per source you want to measure: the Google profile, a website pool, each van or print piece you care about, and your biggest referral partners.
