If your business is the owner or admin on each one, firing the agency means removing its access; if the agency is the only owner, you have to ask it to hand things over, and some transfers take days or weeks. Check ownership before you give notice, and take the phone numbers seriously, because a tracking number that gets switched off stops ringing on every van and listing it’s printed on.

We think every restoration company should be able to leave any agency, including us, without losing its reviews, its ad history or its phone numbers. You can see what each tier of our work includes on the packages page, and what we offer restoration companies on our restoration marketing page. If you’re deciding whether to run marketing yourself or hire again, the restoration marketing guide covers DIY versus hiring, and the rest of the restoration marketing questions library goes question by question.

Who owns my accounts when I fire my restoration agency?

Whoever each account was set up under. There’s no single rule that hands everything back to you when an agency relationship ends: the ad account, the Google profile, the domain, the website and the tracking numbers each have their own owner, and each platform has its own process for moving it. Your contract can say who should own them; the platforms only know who does.

So the first job is an inventory. List these, and next to each one write whose name, email or login it sits under today:

Google Ads account, including Local Services Ads

Google Business Profile

Domain name

Website hosting and the site’s admin login

Call tracking account and the numbers in it

Analytics, reports, call recordings and lead lists

Anything with only the agency’s name next to it is what you could lose. If you’re still deciding whether to leave at all, judging whether your agency produces real jobs comes first.

What happens to my Google Ads account and its history?

It depends on whose account the ads ran in. Agencies usually manage clients through a manager account linked to each client’s own Google Ads account. Google’s page on manager account ownership says the client account still owns its data and can remove a manager’s ownership by unlinking it. That protects you only if someone at your company can get in as an admin.

Watch for one detail. Google says that when a manager creates a new account, the manager automatically becomes its owner, and an owner manager can add and remove users and grant or revoke admin access. An account can have only one owner. If your agency opened the account for you, check that your own login still has Admin access before you give notice.

Google lists five access levels: Email-only, Billing, Read-only, Standard and Admin. Only Admin can give access, change access levels and unlink manager accounts. If your ads ran inside the agency’s own account rather than one opened in your business’s name, in our judgement you should expect to start a new account and ask for an export of your campaigns and reports, because the history lives with whoever owns that account.

What happens to my Local Services Ads when I leave?

Google is moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, so in time they follow the same ownership rules as the rest of your Google Ads account. Two details from Google’s transition page matter if you’re changing agencies around the move:

The account administrator listed on your profile gets the migration emails, starting 14 days before the move. If that’s only the agency, you may not hear about it.

Your old Local Services Ads performance reports don’t carry over to Google Ads. Google says to save or screenshot them before the move.

Google also says a completed business verification and the Google Verified badge carry over. Before you leave, make sure you’re an administrator on the Local Services Ads account yourself and download what you can. If you’re rethinking which paid channels to run after the switch, Google Ads, LSAs or both compares them.

Who keeps my Google Business Profile and my reviews?

The profile’s owners do, and for most restoration companies it holds years of reviews and photos that took real jobs to earn. Google’s page on owners and managers says a profile can have several owners but only one primary owner. Owners can add or remove users and delete the profile; managers can do almost everything else, including editing info, replying to reviews and posting, but can’t add or remove users or remove the profile.

That’s the setup to aim for: you as primary owner, the agency as a manager. When you remove a manager, Google says their past review replies and posts stay on the profile, so nothing the agency did there disappears.

Fix it before you give notice, not after. Google says a new owner or manager has to wait 7 days before they can remove other owners or managers or transfer primary ownership. Optimizing your Google Business Profile covers the rest of the profile once it’s back in your hands.

Who owns my website?

It depends on how it was built and what the contract says. A site built in your own hosting account, with an admin login in your name, is yours to keep. A site built on an agency’s own platform and licensed to you month by month may stay with the agency when you leave, including the copy and the photos of your crews and jobs.

Before you give notice, find out:

Where the site is hosted, and whose account pays for it.

Whether you have an administrator login that works today.

Whether you get a full copy of the site files and content, and in what form.

Whether there’s a buyout, and if so, the number in writing.

If the site can’t come with you, at least ask for the text of every service and city page and the original photos you supplied. In our judgement, rebuilding a restoration site is far faster when the water, fire and mold pages don’t have to be rewritten from nothing.

Who owns my domain name?

The registrant, the name listed on the registration. That should be your business. ICANN, which oversees domain registration, says in its registrant transfer FAQ that it’s your right to move a domain between registrars, and that your registrar must give you the transfer code within five calendar days of asking. Those rights belong to whoever is listed as registrant, so if it’s the agency, getting your own address back depends on the agency’s cooperation.

Watch the timing if the registrant has to change. ICANN says you can’t transfer a domain to a different registrar within 60 days of changing the registrant name, organization or email address. Your domain is on every van, every estimate and every email, so in our view it’s the one item never to leave in someone else’s name.

What happens to the tracking numbers on my vans and my Google profile?

This is the one that can hurt a restoration company most, because emergency calls ride on those numbers. Tracking numbers live in whichever call tracking account created them. CallRail, a widely used tool, says in its porting guide that you own the numbers you create there, that porting a U.S. number away is free, and that the process typically takes 4-6 weeks. The request has to be approved by an administrator on that account.

The danger is a number being shut off instead of moved. CallRail’s page on deactivating a tracking number says deactivation is immediate, calls stop being forwarded to your business, and callers hear that the number is no longer in service. A deactivated number can be reactivated for up to four weeks; after that it’s released for good. CallRail also says not to deactivate numbers or close the account until a port has finished.

So before you give notice: get the list of every tracking number, where each one is printed or listed, and who the account administrator is. Whether tracking numbers hurt your rankings covers which number belongs on your Google profile in the first place.

What about my call recordings, reports and lead lists?

Ask for them in writing before the last day, in a format you can open without the agency’s software: a spreadsheet of leads with dates and sources, call recordings or at least the call log, and the monthly reports you paid for.

CallRail says that deactivating a number keeps its reports in place, but that only helps if you can still log in to the account. If the call tracking account is the agency’s, ask for an export of the call log and recordings while the relationship is still friendly.

Your own job records matter more than any of this. If each signed job already carries its lead source, losing the agency’s dashboard costs you charts, not history. Tracking which marketing brings in booked jobs covers how to keep that record in your own software.

In what order should I take things back when I fire the agency?

In our judgement, the order matters more than the speed. A sequence that keeps the phones ringing:

Get admin access first, quietly. Admin on Google Ads, owner on the Google profile, a working website login, and the domain registrant confirmed. Start the 7-day clock on the profile before anything else.

Save your history. Download reports, lead lists and call logs, including any old Local Services Ads reports.

Start number ports. Have your new provider request the tracking numbers you want to keep, and ask that nothing be deactivated until the ports finish.

Give notice in writing, with the handover list attached.

Remove the agency’s access only after you’ve confirmed every account works without it, then change any shared passwords.

What if the agency won't hand things over?

Start in writing, and be specific: name each account, the access you need and a date. If that fails, the platforms give you some routes of your own.

For the Google profile, Google’s page on requesting ownership says a business owner can request access from the current owner, who has 3 days to respond; if there’s no response, you may have the option to claim the profile. For Google Ads, a client account admin can unlink a manager, which removes its ownership. For the domain, the registrant’s rights are what count, and for phone numbers, porting goes through the account administrator.

Where none of that works, the contract decides, and this page is general guidance, not legal advice; a business attorney can tell you what yours allows. For next time, what a normal agency contract looks like covers the terms to get in writing before you sign.

Want to see where your company stands?

A free visibility audit shows where you show up on Google, Maps and AI answers, and what it's costing you in calls.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about leaving an agency for a restoration company

Emergency calls can’t wait for a handover. A water damage caller who hears that a number is out of service calls someone else. That’s why phone numbers come before every other item on the exit list.

Your number is in more places than you think. Vans, door hangers, magnets left with property managers, and the contact lists of plumbers, agents and adjusters who refer you. In our judgement, a tracking number that has spread that far should be ported, not replaced.

Reviews are hard to rebuild. Restoration customers often hire in a hurry and rarely need you twice, so years of reviews on your Google profile aren’t something you can quickly earn back. Primary ownership of that profile is worth getting right before anything else.

Weather sets the calendar. Plan the switch for a quieter stretch, not during a freeze or after a major storm.

A worked example: how long a clean exit takes

This is an illustration built from the platform timelines on this page, not a promise of how fast any one handover will go. Say an owner decides to change agencies and the agency holds the Google profile, opened the Google Ads account and created the call tracking numbers.

Week one. The owner asks to be made primary owner of the Google profile and an Admin on Google Ads, and asks the registrar for the domain’s transfer code. Google’s 7-day wait on new profile owners starts now; the registrar has five calendar days to provide the code.

Weeks two to seven. The new phone provider requests the tracking numbers. At CallRail’s typical 4-6 weeks, the ports finish somewhere in this window. Nothing gets deactivated in the meantime.

After the ports finish. The owner removes the agency’s access and changes shared passwords.

The point of the example: the phone numbers set the pace, so the notice period should be at least as long as the ports. Starting with a number already in your name cuts weeks off the exit.

For reference, we work without long-term contracts, month to month, so we earn the business every month. The standard ask is three months, written into the contract, but we won’t make you stay. Whoever you work with, the accounts above should be set up so that leaving is a paperwork job, not a rescue.

Frequently asked questions

Can the agency delete my Google Business Profile on the way out?

Only owners can remove a profile; managers can’t. That’s why the agency should be a manager, with your business as primary owner.

Do I lose my reviews if the agency stops managing my profile?

No. Reviews belong to the profile, not to the person managing it. Google says even the agency’s past review replies and posts stay on the profile after it’s removed.

Will my website stop ranking if I move it?

Moving hosts or agencies doesn’t have to reset anything, but changing page addresses or losing pages can. Keep the domain, keep the pages that bring in calls, and redirect any address that has to change.

Can I keep the tracking number but drop the call tracking service?

Usually, by porting it to a regular phone provider. You’ll keep the number but lose the call tracking reports from that point on, so save the call log before the port.

Should I tell the agency before I take back admin access?

Asking for admin access to your own accounts is a reasonable request at any time, and a good agency won’t object. Doing it before you give notice simply means the handover doesn’t depend on goodwill at the end.

What if I already signed a contract that gives the agency the accounts?

Ask now, in writing, to be added as an owner or admin on each account, and find out what the contract says about handover.
