If you run a shop that’s staffed and receives customers during your listed hours, with permanent signage, you can be a hybrid business that shows the address and a service area. Either way you list up to 20 cities or ZIP codes you really serve, within about 2 hours’ drive of where you’re based, and you keep one profile for the whole area.

Getting the business type right is one of the first things we fix in the listing cleanup and Google Business Profile management that are part of our local SEO work for plumbing companies, because the address and service area sit underneath everything else on the profile. The rest of the plumbing marketing questions library covers the profile, reviews and ads one question at a time.

What is a service-area business in Google's terms?

Google sorts local businesses into three types (Manage your service areas for service-area & hybrid businesses):

Service-area business: visits or delivers to customers directly but doesn’t serve customers at its business address. Google’s examples are cleaning services and plumbers. A service-area business can only have one profile for the whole area it serves.

Hybrid business: serves customers at its address and also visits or delivers to them. It can show its storefront address, set hours for when staff are available, and also have a service area. Google’s example is a dine-in restaurant that also delivers.

Storefront business: interacts with customers in person during business hours at a physical location with permanent on-site signage (Verify your business with a video recording).

The deciding line is whether customers come to you. Google says that if your business doesn’t have permanent on-site signage, it isn’t eligible as a storefront and should be listed as a service-area business.

Should my plumbing company be a service-area business?

For most plumbing companies, yes. Google’s guidelines use a plumber as the example: if you’re a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile, and in general, if you’re a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers (Guidelines for representing your business on Google).

Three questions settle it, and they come straight from Google’s rules:

Do customers come to your address? Not drop by once a year, but come there to be served.

Is it staffed by your team during the hours you list?

Is there permanent signage with your business name at the address?

If all three are yes, you can be a hybrid business and show the address. If any is no, set up as a service-area business. In our judgement, owners sometimes keep the address showing because they feel it looks more established. Google’s rules don’t leave that choice open: the address shows only where customers are actually served.

What if my plumbing company has a shop, warehouse or showroom?

It depends on what happens there. Google says that if you serve customers at your address and want a service area too, the location should be staffed by your team and able to receive customers during its stated hours, and businesses showing their address should keep permanent fixed signage there (Guidelines for representing your business on Google). For plumbers, in our judgement:

A shop with a counter or showroom where homeowners pick out fixtures or water heaters, staffed during your listed hours, with your sign out front: hybrid. Show the address and set a service area.

A warehouse or yard where trucks load in the morning and no customer walks in: service-area business, even with a sign on the building.

An office that’s staffed but closed to the public: service-area business. Receiving customers is the test.

Google rules out two addresses entirely: a rented mailing address you don’t operate from (a virtual office), and a co-working office unless it has clear signage, receives customers during business hours and is staffed by your team.

I run my plumbing business from home. What changes?

Very little, as long as the address stays private. Google says the address on your profile is public, and that a service-area business can choose not to show it and list its service area instead (Manage your business address). Your home address is still entered privately so Google knows where the business is based; it just isn’t shown to customers.

Verification is the part home-based owners worry about. Google decides which verification methods you’re offered, and they can’t be changed (Verify your business on Google). If you’re offered a video recording, Google’s requirements for service-area businesses fit a plumber well: record street signs or landmarks in your immediate neighborhood, show the professional tools and equipment you use, and prove you manage the business, for example by unlocking a van with your business branding or showing an invoice or business permit that matches the name on your profile (Verify your business with a video recording).

If you verify by postcard, Google says most codes arrive within 14 days, and editing your business name, address or category while you wait makes the code stop working. Plan the profile fully before you start, and don’t touch it until you’re verified.

How do I switch my profile from showing an address to a service area?

Two edits, in this order, from Google’s help pages (Manage your business address and Manage your service areas):

Hide the address. In your Business Profile, edit the location and turn off Show business address to customers. Google says you should only do this if you’re a service-area business, and that if you hide the address and don’t enter a service area, a local area is chosen for you.

Set the service area. Select Edit profile, then Location, then Edit next to Service area, and enter the cities, postal codes or other areas you serve. Save.

Google says profile changes usually take about 10 minutes to show and in some cases up to 30 days, and approved service area edits may take up to 48 hours to show. In our judgement, make this change on its own: if you also change your category or name the same week and calls drop, you won’t know which edit did it. The category side is covered in choosing your Google categories.

Which towns should go in my plumbing service area?

Google’s limits (Manage your service areas):

Up to 20 service areas, set by city, postal code or another type of area.

No radius around your shop. If you set one up that way years ago, you can’t edit it; you have to switch to named areas.

The overall area shouldn’t stretch more than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based.

Be as specific and accurate as possible.

Twenty is a limit, not a target. In our judgement, a plumber’s service area should be the towns where you’ll send a truck at 9 p.m. for a burst pipe, plus the ones you actively want planned work in. Pull a year of jobs from your job software, group them by town or ZIP code, and start from where the work already comes from. If you only take big repipes or remodels farther out, say that on your website and in your services list rather than stretching the service area to cover every town you’d consider.

Will setting up as a service-area business hurt my ranking?

Google’s help pages don’t say that being a service-area business helps or hurts ranking. What Google does say is that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that distance refers to how far each business is from the customer who’s searching (Tips to improve your local ranking on Google). Your profile is still tied to where the business is based, whether or not the address shows.

In our judgement, two expectations are worth correcting:

Hiding the address doesn’t make you closer to anyone. You’ll still tend to show best near where you’re based.

Listing a town doesn’t make you rank there. The service area tells customers where you work. Showing up for searches made from farther away still comes down to relevance and popularity.

How those pieces add up in Maps is covered in getting into the Google map pack, and how to build town pages that help rather than look like spam is in building plumbing city pages.

Can I have a separate profile for each town I cover?

Not just for being in a town. Google says service-area businesses should have one profile for the central office or location with a designated service area, can’t list a virtual office unless it’s staffed during business hours, and should have only one profile per business (Guidelines for representing your business on Google).

The exception is a real second location: Google allows one profile per location if you have different locations with separate service areas and separate staff at each. For a plumbing company, in our judgement, that means a branch with its own trucks and techs based there, not a mailbox or an employee’s garage. Profiles made for towns without a real location run against those rules and, in our view, put the account at risk for very little gain.

How does a service-area setup affect Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads keep their own service area settings. In the ads account you add areas by county, city or ZIP code and can exclude specific ones (Edit your industries, service areas, and job types). In our judgement, the two should tell the same story: if your Google profile lists a dozen towns, the ads shouldn’t be buying leads in three dozen.

Timing is the other difference for 2026. Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns. Google says the first phase began in August 2026 for select home and storefront service advertisers, naming plumbing, and that the migration expands in late 2026 to broader groups, including service-area businesses without physical storefronts (Local Services Ads transition to Performance Max). So a home-based plumbing company may move later than one with a storefront. The same page says significant updates to your business name, storefront address or primary category require verification, and the campaign may pause while Google reviews them, which it says typically takes 24 to 48 hours. Whether the ads are worth it for you is covered in whether Local Services Ads are worth it for plumbers.

What else on the profile changes once I'm a service-area business?

Less than owners expect: the name, category, services, phone, photos and reviews work the same way. Two details are worth checking once the address is hidden:

Hours. Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours (Guidelines for representing your business on Google). For a service-area plumber, in our judgement, that means the hours someone answers the phone and dispatches.

Everywhere else the address appears. If your website footer, directory listings or invoices still show your home address, customers can find it anyway. Decide whether you want it public anywhere, and make the listings match. Skip exterior photos of a home base for the same reason.

The rest of the setup, field by field, is in optimizing your plumbing Google profile.

Want to see where your company stands?

A free visibility audit shows where you show up on Google, Maps and AI answers, and what it's costing you in calls.

Get my free visibility auditBook a growth call

What's different about service areas for plumbing companies

Night calls set the real boundary. A plumber’s service area isn’t just where you’d take a job. It’s where you’ll get a truck to a flooded basement in the middle of the night. In our judgement, towns you can’t reach quickly on an emergency become calls you turn away or bad reviews.

Plenty of shops start at home. Many plumbing companies run from the owner’s house, a garage or a yard. That’s exactly the case Google’s guidelines describe, and it doesn’t stop the business from verifying, collecting reviews or showing up in Maps near where it’s based.

A worked example: drawing a service area from last year's jobs

These numbers are made up to show the method, not a benchmark for your market. Say a three-truck plumbing company runs from the owner’s home and its profile shows the home address, with no service area set. It pulls last year’s completed jobs from its job software: 900 jobs across 26 towns.

Sorted by town, 15 towns within about 40 minutes of the house account for 810 of those jobs, which is 90%. The other 11 towns produced 90 jobs between them, mostly planned work like water heaters and repipes, and the office remembers turning down night calls from the farthest ones.

The setup: hide the address, list those 15 towns as the service area, and leave room under the limit of 20 for two or three towns the owner actively wants to grow into and can reach at night. The farther towns stay on the website as places it takes scheduled work.

Listing cleanup and Business Profile management, including the address and service area, are part of our Essentials package at $3,500 a month. A free visibility audit is a reasonable place to check your own setup against Google’s rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a PO box or a mailbox store as my address?

No. Google says PO boxes or mailboxes at remote locations aren’t acceptable, and a rented mailing address you don’t operate from isn’t eligible for a profile.
