How does an HVAC company show up in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and other AI answers?<\/h2>\n
There’s no sign-up and no published formula: Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot build their answers from web pages that search crawlers can reach, and none of them promises placement. The work is thorough local SEO: let their crawlers into your site, get your pages indexed in Google and Bing, keep your name, address, phone and hours identical on your website, Google Business Profile and Bing Places, and give each service and area its own clear page that states the facts outright. Nobody can promise an AI tool will name your company, because these platforms don’t publish how they choose one business over another.<\/p>\n
AI answers are one of the three places we optimize for, alongside the regular Google results and the Maps 3-pack, as part of our local SEO work<\/a>. It’s the same foundation either way, and we won’t guarantee an AI tool will name you, because nobody honestly can. What they do say:<\/p>\n In our reading, the common thread is that all of them start from pages a search crawler can reach.<\/p>\n Not one that anybody publishes. OpenAI’s help center says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help people find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed<\/a>. Google says specific optimization isn’t required for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that the usual SEO fundamentals still apply. Bing goes furthest: its guidelines name the practice (generative engine optimization) and say it does not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences, the same way SEO doesn’t guarantee rankings.<\/p>\n So be careful with anyone who promises your company a spot in ChatGPT’s answers. This is new and changes often, and the platforms don’t document how they pick one HVAC company over another. They do document what makes a site eligible<\/em>, which is what the steps below cover.<\/p>\n Check this first, because it’s the one thing that can rule you out completely. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers<\/a>, though they can still appear as plain navigational links. It recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file and allowing requests from its published IP ranges. Perplexity makes the same recommendation for PerplexityBot, and Google lists allowing crawling in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting setup, among its best practices for AI features.<\/p>\n Security plugins and hosting defaults sometimes block bots without the owner knowing, so check even if nobody remembers changing anything. One more thing to know: OpenAI’s training crawler, GPTBot, is a separate setting. Blocking it doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search.<\/p>\n Being crawlable isn’t the same as being indexed. For Google, the bar is that a page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Verify your site in Google Search Console, which Google suggests for spotting technical problems quickly, and check that your service pages show up there.<\/p>\n Bing deserves more attention than most HVAC owners give it, because its webmaster guidelines<\/a> cover Bing search, Copilot and Bing’s grounding API results. Bing asks for:<\/p>\n This is the same groundwork that makes regular SEO work, and like regular SEO it builds over months, not days; how long HVAC SEO takes<\/a> covers that ramp.<\/p>\n Because every one of these systems is trying to work out which business is which. Google’s AI features guidance tells site owners to check that their Business Profile information is up to date. Bing says it uses many data sources for its local listings and that Bing Places is one of the primary sources<\/a>, so claim and complete that listing too: name, address, phone, category, website and hours. Bing’s guidelines also ask for clear, consistent names for organizations and locations, and say clear naming improves citation accuracy.<\/p>\n In practice that means one business name, spelled the same way on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp and the directories, with the same phone number and the same hours. If you’ve changed names, moved, or swapped numbers over the years, fixing your name, address and phone<\/a> walks through the cleanup, and tightening up your Google Business Profile<\/a> covers the profile itself.<\/p>\n Bing is the most specific of the four about content. Its guidelines say a page is more likely to be picked for an AI answer when it:<\/p>\n Google’s list overlaps: important content in text form, not only inside images, and content written for people. For an HVAC company, the facts worth stating plainly on each service page are the towns you cover, whether you take emergency calls and when, the equipment you work on, and how to book. In our judgement, a page that says “we serve Round Rock, Pflugerville and Hutto, with same-day AC repair until 8 p.m.” gives an AI tool something to repeat; a page that says “serving the greater area with quality comfort” doesn’t.<\/p>\n It can help them read the page, but neither Google nor Bing treats it as a shortcut. Google lists structured data among the SEO best practices for AI features, with the condition that it matches the visible text on the page. Bing says structured data may support clearer grounding but does not guarantee visibility, that markup must accurately reflect visible content, and that misleading markup may be ignored and can affect trust.<\/p>\n So add LocalBusiness markup with your real name, address, phone and hours if your site doesn’t have it, and make sure every detail in it also appears on the page. Don’t add review stars, services or service areas to the markup that the page itself doesn’t show.<\/p>\n None of the AI documentation cited on this page says so directly, so treat any confident claim either way with suspicion. What Google does say is that reviews affect regular local results: it lists popularity among the factors behind local results, says popularity is partly based on how many reviews you have, and more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking<\/a>.<\/p>\n Our judgement is that reviews are worth the effort regardless. They already decide a lot of what happens on Google Maps, and an AI answer that draws on business listings is looking at the same profiles homeowners see. If you’re behind on reviews, that’s the place to start, and how much reviews affect HVAC calls<\/a> goes into the detail.<\/p>\n Ask them the way a homeowner would, and keep notes:<\/p>\n Treat the results as a spot check, not a score: answers vary by wording and location, and Google says AI Overviews often don’t appear at all. Whether any of this turns into phone calls is a separate question, covered in whether AI search is sending you calls<\/a>.<\/p>\n Bing’s guidelines spell out the tactics that cost visibility in Bing and Copilot:<\/p>\n In our judgement, if a tactic only makes sense because a machine is reading the page, it’s a risk to your whole site, not just your AI visibility.<\/p>\n A free visibility audit checks the Google profile, reviews, site and tracking, and shows what to fix first.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Emergency calls need to be spelled out.<\/strong> A homeowner asking an AI tool for help at 10 p.m. with no heat wants a company that takes night calls. If you do, say so on the page in plain words, with the hours, and make sure your Google Business Profile hours tell the same story. If you don’t, don’t imply it; a wrong answer from an AI tool is a call you can’t take.<\/p>\n Heating and cooling are different searches.<\/strong> AC repair, furnace repair, heat pump installation and maintenance plans are separate questions homeowners ask, and in our judgement each deserves its own page instead of a single “HVAC services” list. That matches Bing’s advice to keep each page on one topic.<\/p>\n Service areas are where most HVAC sites go vague.<\/strong> “Serving the metro area” doesn’t tell an AI tool whether you’ll drive to a particular suburb. Name the towns you actually cover, and keep that list consistent with the service area on your Google profile.<\/p>\n This is an illustration, not a real client. Picture a three-truck HVAC company that asks ChatGPT and Perplexity for “AC repair in” its home town and never sees its name. A one-hour check turns up three problems:<\/p>\n None of these fixes can force a mention. Each one removes a reason to be left out.
