Google’s Keyword Planner shows local click prices, and dividing the monthly figure by 30.4 gives the average daily budget Google asks for. There’s no honest single national number, because click prices change with your market, the season and the services you advertise.

Google Ads management is part of our local ads work in every one of our HVAC marketing packages, and ad spend is always paid to Google separately. For the budget across every channel, not only Google Ads, see what an HVAC company should spend on marketing, and the rest of the HVAC marketing questions library goes question by question.

How do I work out a Google Ads budget for my HVAC company?

Work it backward from the jobs you want, not forward from a number that feels comfortable. You need four inputs:

Booked jobs you want from ads each month. Pick a number your crews can actually run, on top of the work you already get.

Your booking rate. Out of every call from a new customer, how many become a booked job. Your call tracking and your field software (ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber) hold this.

Your click-to-call rate. Out of every click on your ad, how many people call or fill in a form.

What a click costs in your area for the services you’re advertising.

Then the math runs in a straight line. Booked jobs divided by the booking rate gives the calls you need. Calls divided by the click-to-call rate gives the clicks you need. Clicks times the cost per click gives the monthly budget.

Built this way, the budget comes with its own test. If a month of spend doesn’t produce roughly the booked jobs the math predicted, one of the four inputs was wrong, and you can see which.

Where do I find what Google Ads clicks cost in my area?

In Google’s own Keyword Planner, under Tools in your Google Ads account (billing has to be set up before it shows keyword ideas). Two parts of it matter for a budget:

Top of page bid (low range) and (high range). Google describes these as roughly the 20th and 80th percentile of what advertisers have historically paid for their ad to show at the top of the page for that keyword, based on the locations you select. Set the location to the area your trucks actually cover before you read them.

Forecasts. Add the keywords you’d run, such as AC repair, furnace repair or AC replacement, and the forecast estimates clicks, cost and conversions for a daily budget and bid strategy you choose. Google refreshes forecasts daily from the last 7 to 10 days and adjusts them for seasonality (Use Keyword Planner).

Treat both as a starting range, not a quote. Google says a new account’s forecasts are based on historical averages across all advertisers until there’s data about your own business, and that results will be less accurate when you target a small geographic area (About Keyword Planner forecasts). That describes most single-location HVAC companies.

That’s why this page doesn’t quote a typical HVAC cost per click: the honest number is the one Keyword Planner shows for your towns this month. To size up who you’re bidding against, see how competitive your area is.

How do I turn a monthly budget into the daily budget Google asks for?

Google Ads budgets are set per campaign as an average daily budget. To convert a monthly number, divide it by 30.4, the average number of days in a month. Google’s own example: $304 a month is an average daily budget of $10.

Two limits keep the spend inside that number. For most campaigns, a single day can spend up to two times the average daily budget, so Google can catch busy days, and over a month you won’t pay more than 30.4 times the daily budget. Google’s budget report shows how much you’re projected to pay by the end of the month (About average daily budgets).

What booking and call rates should I plug into the math?

Your own, wherever you have them: call tracking shows how many clicks turned into calls, and your field software shows how many of those calls booked. Use the last few months, not your best week.

Starting from nothing, pick cautious guesses, write them down and replace them after the first month. In our judgement, a written guess beats skipping the math, because each guess tells you what to check:

Calls come in but don’t book. The booking rate is the weak input, and how fast you respond to new leads matters more than the budget.

Clicks come in but nobody calls. Look at the ad and the page it sends people to before adding spend.

Clicks cost more than planned. Check whether your keywords are broader than the jobs you want.

How much should I spend before I can judge whether Google Ads is working?

Enough to produce a real sample of calls, run for long enough to read it. Google says Smart Bidding performance typically settles within one to two conversion cycles after a change, and to evaluate it over two conversion cycles or a two-week window, whichever is longer, allowing for conversions that can take several days to come in (About Smart Bidding learning).

If the budget only buys a handful of calls a month, each booked or missed job swings the average. In our judgement, a test budget should buy enough calls in its first month that one good or bad week doesn’t decide the verdict for you.

If that’s more than you can carry, narrow the test instead of thinning it out: one service, the core of your service area. What to expect in the first weeks is covered in how soon Google Ads bring in HVAC calls.

How do I know if my Google Ads budget is too small for my market?

Google tells you in three places:

A “Limited by budget” status on the campaign. Google can show a recommended budget based on recent performance, your current budget, your keywords and your targeting settings. It won’t show one if you rarely reach your daily budget or the campaign has limited data (Fix “Limited by budget” status).

Impression share. This is the share of impressions you got out of all the ones you were eligible for. Google calls it a good way to understand whether your ads might reach more people if you increase your bid or budget (About impression share).

The budget report, whose daily spend view shows how much of the maximum daily spending limit the campaign used each day.

One catch. If you use Maximize conversions bidding, Google says those campaigns are designed to spend the full daily budget and are “limited by budget” by design, so it doesn’t recommend reading the lost-to-budget impression share column with that strategy (About Maximize conversions bidding). The status alone doesn’t prove more money would help.

Read it alongside cost per booked job: capped and booking jobs at a good cost is a reason to add budget; capped at a bad cost is a reason to fix it first. When to raise, lower or pause ad spend goes through those decisions one at a time.

Should I split the budget between repair, replacement and maintenance?

Usually, once you advertise more than one kind of job. Google’s advice on organizing an account is to create a separate campaign whenever you need different settings, such as a different budget or different locations, and to build each ad group around a narrow theme (Organize your account with ad groups). For an HVAC company, that often means one campaign for repair and another for replacements, so a pricey replacement keyword can’t use up the budget your repair calls need on a hot afternoon.

Google also warns that reorganizing an account after you’ve built several campaigns wipes out the data you’ve accumulated, so decide the split before launch. For which service gets money first, see which HVAC services to advertise first.

What's the most an HVAC company should spend on Google Ads?

The ceiling is set by two things you control: what you can afford to pay for one booked job, and how many jobs your crews can run. Work out the most you’d pay for a booked job from your average ticket and your margin on that kind of work. As long as extra spend keeps booking jobs under that number and the schedule has room, more budget is buying profitable work.

It stops making sense when either one breaks. If your cost per booked job climbs past your limit as you add budget, the extra money is buying clicks that book worse. If the schedule is already booked out, more calls turn into customers you can’t serve in time, and some of them call the next company.

In our judgement, the schedule is often the tighter limit in peak season, so adding budget has to be planned with dispatch, not only inside Google Ads. Scaling up ads for peak season covers the order to do it in.

Does an agency's fee come out of my Google Ads budget?

It shouldn’t be blended in. Ad spend is what Google charges for clicks; a management fee pays someone to build, run and report on the campaigns. Ask any agency, us included, to show both lines separately.

Our own setup is public. Ad spend isn’t included in any package and is paid directly to Google. Essentials is $3,500 a month and includes Google Ads management for up to $2,500 a month in ad spend; Growth is $4,500 a month and covers up to $5,000 a month in ad spend, plus Local Services Ads management. We recommend a specific ad budget after a quick audit of your market.

What return should I expect from Google Ads in the first three months?

Nobody can honestly promise a number, including us: it depends on click prices in your towns, the season, how many calls your office books and what each job is worth. What you can expect is a readable answer: enough tracked calls and booked jobs to calculate cost per booked job for each service, and which input is off if it’s higher than planned.

The comparison that matters is cost per booked job against the profit on that job, not month-one revenue against month-one spend. In our judgement, replacement campaigns need a longer window than repair campaigns, because a replacement can take estimates and follow-up before it books, while a repair call often books the same day.

Talk it through with someone who runs this every day

A 15-minute growth call: your market, your numbers, and what a realistic budget looks like. Change the month range to compare summer, winter and the shoulder months before you settle on a number, because a budget sized for July can be more than April needs.

Repair and replacement don’t cost the same to win. Pull the top-of-page bid ranges for repair keywords and replacement keywords separately. They can be far apart, and so is what each booked job is worth to you, which is why a single blended cost per click hides the real math.

The office is part of the budget. The booking rate in the formula is your office’s number. Raising it from one in three calls to one in two lowers your cost per booked job by the same amount as clicks costing a third less, and it doesn’t cost anything at Google.

A worked example: budgeting backward from 12 booked jobs

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark for your market. Say you want 12 more booked repair jobs a month from Google Ads. Your office books about 1 in 2 calls from new customers, so you need 24 calls. About 1 in 6 people who click your ad call you, so you need 144 clicks. Say Keyword Planner’s top-of-page range for your repair keywords puts a click around $20 in your service area. The month costs 144 times $20, or $2,880.

Divide by 30.4 and the average daily budget is about $95. On a busy day Google can spend up to about $189, and the month still won’t bill more than $2,880. Each booked job costs $2,880 divided by 12, or $240 in ad spend. If an average repair ticket leaves comfortably more than $240 after parts and labor, the budget holds up. If it doesn’t, the fix is in the inputs (booking rate, landing page, which keywords) before it’s in the budget.

Now stress-test it. If clicks cost $30 instead of $20, the same 144 clicks cost $4,320 and each booked job $360. Run Keyword Planner’s low and high range through the math before you commit. For comparison, $2,880 a month is more ad spend than the $2,500 our Essentials package manages and within the $5,000 that Growth covers; either way, ad spend is paid to Google separately. Running your own inputs through the same math is what a free visibility audit is for.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google spend more than my daily budget?

On some days, yes: for most campaigns, up to two times the average daily budget to catch busy days.
