Then send one reminder a few days later and send the link to customers from past seasons too. Google allows you to ask for honest reviews, but it doesn’t allow incentives such as a discount on the final payment, asking only the happy customers, or pressuring someone on the spot.

Reviews are one of the few things on your profile only your customers can supply, so a steady ask at every handover is the part we can’t do for you. The rest is setup and follow-through: review response and basic review generation are included in our Essentials package ($3,500 a month) as part of our local SEO work, and Growth ($4,500 a month) adds advanced review generation. See how it fits our pool builder marketing, and the rest of the pool builder marketing questions library goes question by question.

Why do Google reviews matter so much for a pool builder?

Because a pool is a big, rare purchase, and reviews are how a homeowner checks a builder they’ve never used. Research from Northwestern University’s Medill Spiegel Research Center, first published in 2017, found that showing reviews raised conversion more for higher-priced products than for cheaper ones: a 380% increase for a higher-priced product against 190% for a lower-priced one. That study looked at online retail products, not pool contracts, so treat it as a direction rather than a number for your business. In our judgement, the direction fits: the bigger the check, the more the buyer reads.

Reviews also feed your visibility. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, that the popularity factor (how well-known a business is) draws on information like how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Sources: How Online Reviews Influence Sales and Tips to improve your local ranking on Google.

Why does my pool company have so few reviews?

Usually it’s the math and the timing, not the work. A service company might close out dozens of jobs a week; a pool builder might hand over a few pools a month in season. Every customer you don’t ask is a bigger share of your possible reviews.

The timing works against you too. A build runs for weeks or months, the customer deals with several people along the way, and by the time the pool is done everyone is focused on the punch list and the final payment. In our judgement, the ask falls through the cracks because nobody owns it: the salesperson thinks the project manager will ask, the project manager thinks the office will, and the office assumes someone already did. Each of those is a process gap with a fix below.

When is the best time to ask a pool customer for a review?

When the customer can see the finished pool working. Google doesn’t set a timing rule, so this is our judgement by job type:

New builds. At the startup or handover walkthrough, once the pool is full, the equipment is running and the customer has been shown how it all works.

Renovations and resurfacing. At the reveal, when the new finish or tile is filled and the before is still fresh in their mind.

Service and repair customers, if you offer them. When the fix is done and working.

Don’t ask in the middle of a build, when the yard is torn up and a weather or inspection delay is the main thing on the customer’s mind. And don’t wait for a perfect moment months later; a customer who has been swimming all summer is happy, but the ask is easy to forget by then. A short reminder text a few days after handover catches the ones who meant to and didn’t.

Who should ask: the salesperson, the project manager or the owner?

Whoever the customer trusts most at the end of the job, and only one person. In many pool companies that’s the project manager who ran the build, or the owner if you’re still selling and building yourself. Name that person on every job, and make the ask a line on the handover checklist next to the equipment walkthrough.

Two lines from Google’s policy matter here. It doesn’t allow a business to ask its staff to bring in a certain number of reviews, and it doesn’t allow asking for specific content, including content that identifies a staff member. So don’t set review quotas for your project managers, and don’t ask customers to mention them by name. In our judgement, track whether the ask happened at each handover instead; that’s fully in your team’s control. Source: Prohibited and restricted content.

What can I offer customers for a review, and what's off-limits?

Nothing in exchange for the review itself. Google’s Maps content policy doesn’t allow a business to offer incentives, such as payment, discounts, or free goods or services, for posting a review or for changing or removing a negative one. It also doesn’t allow a business to discourage negative reviews, selectively ask only happy customers, or require or pressure customers to leave a review while on the premises.

Pool builders have a few temptations other trades don’t. In our reading of that policy, each of these would count as an incentive:

Knocking something off the final payment for a review.

A free first-season opening, a free chemical start-up kit or a free month of cleaning for a review.

Holding a warranty registration or the final walkthrough until a review is posted.

Federal rules point the same way. The FTC’s rule on consumer reviews makes it a violation for a business to offer compensation or other incentives for reviews expressing a particular sentiment, positive or negative. That’s a summary of the rules, not legal advice. Sources: Google Maps content policy and 16 CFR Part 465.

What should I say when I ask?

Short, the same for every customer, with no hint about the rating. Something like:

“We really enjoyed building this with you. Most of our new customers find us by reading reviews from people like you, so I’m texting you our Google review link now. If you have a few minutes this week, we’d be grateful for an honest review.”

What’s missing is on purpose: no “five stars”, no “mention Mike”, no “if you’re happy with it”, and no offer. Then hand over the link and move on to the next item on the walkthrough. In our reading, standing there while the customer types on your tablet is the kind of on-the-spot pressure Google’s policy rules out. In our judgement, it also helps to tell customers at the start of the project that you’ll ask at the end, so the request doesn’t come out of nowhere.

How do I get the review link to my customers?

Google gives every Business Profile a review link and a QR code. It suggests including them on receipts and in thank-you emails, and says you can also send review requests by email, WhatsApp message or Facebook post. For a pool company, the natural places are the text the person asking sends at handover, the closeout email with the final invoice, and a QR card in the owner’s binder or warranty packet.

Two details catch people out. Review QR codes can currently only be generated from a computer browser, not a phone, so have the office make the cards. And customers need to be signed into a Google Account to leave a review, though Google says they can set one up with a non-Gmail email address. Sources: Create a Google link or QR code to request reviews and Tips to get more reviews.

Can I ask customers from past seasons for reviews?

Yes, as long as they really were customers, and send it to all of them, not just the ones you liked. Google’s policy allows businesses to encourage reviews of a genuine experience, and doesn’t allow selectively asking for positive ones. For most pool builders, the customers from the last few seasons are the biggest untapped source of reviews, because most of them were never asked.

In our judgement, the slow months are the time to do it. Send one short, personal note with the link, mention the project (“your pool in Cedar Park”), and don’t follow up more than once. A customer who has had a full summer with the pool usually has something specific to say, which is exactly what the next homeowner wants to read.

What should I do if a build had problems?

Fix the problem first, then ask the same way you ask everyone. Google’s policy doesn’t let you skip the unhappy customers, and Google says a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy to readers.

If a critical review does go up, reply. Google’s advice for negative reviews is to protect the reviewer’s privacy, acknowledge mistakes without taking responsibility for things outside your control, explain what you can and can’t do, and apologize when it’s earned. A pool build has plenty outside your control, such as permit timelines and weather, so a calm reply that explains what happened reads well to the next homeowner. Google also says constructive replies and following up on concerns may encourage a customer to update their review. What you can’t do is offer anything for a change, or threaten the reviewer; the FTC’s rule makes groundless legal threats or intimidation to get a review removed a violation. Sources: Tips to get more reviews and 16 CFR Part 465.

What happens if a pool company buys reviews?

Google can restrict the whole profile, not just remove the fake reviews. The restrictions it lists include blocking new reviews for a set period, unpublishing existing reviews for a set period, and showing a warning on the profile that fake reviews were removed. Google says it emails the owner before applying a restriction, and businesses can appeal.

The FTC’s rule also makes it a violation for a business to buy reviews it knew or should have known were fake. In our judgement, a service that promises a flood of reviews doesn’t move that risk off you; the profile that gets the warning is yours, and for a business that lives on trust, a fake-review warning is far worse than a short review count. If your problem is visibility rather than reviews, getting your pool company to rank in Google Maps covers the other levers. Treat the ask like the equipment walkthrough: it happens on every job.

Handovers cluster in season. Most of your asks will happen in a few busy months, and reviews will be thin the rest of the year. Asking past customers in the slow season evens that out. Real photos help a sparse profile too; using project photos and videos covers what to post.

Tell Google what you built. Google says customers reviewing a service business may be asked which tasks the business performed, using the business’s service list, website or a standard list. If new construction, renovations and resurfacing are all on your services list, a review can show which kind of job it was; optimizing your pool builder Google Business Profile covers the services list. Source: About reviews for service businesses.

The sales cycle is long. A homeowner may read your reviews early in their research and again just before signing. Recent reviews matter at both points, and following up during a long sales cycle covers how to stay in front of them in between.

A worked example: a small builder's review count over one year

These numbers are made up to show the math, not a benchmark. Say you hand over 30 pools a year, and right now someone remembers to ask on about 1 in 3 of them, or 10 asks. If about half of the customers who are asked go on to post, that’s 5 new reviews a year.

Now make the ask a line on every handover checklist, with the link texted on the spot and one reminder a few days later. That’s 30 asks, and at the same half, about 15 reviews. In the slow season, send one note to the 80 customers from your last few seasons who were never asked. If 1 in 4 of them post, that’s another 20. Same work, same customers: from 5 reviews a year to about 35, with no discounts and no quotas.

How many asked customers actually post varies a lot, so count your own for a few months. The number to manage is the share of handovers where the ask happened; tracking it alongside your leads is covered in tracking which marketing produces signed contracts.

Frequently asked questions

Can my employees or family leave reviews for my pool company?

Not on Google.
